I really didn't want Jonathan to be the guilty one - I'd already guessed that his brother was Charlie Johnson - but the last chapter gave him a bit of redemption. I don't think he quite fits the psychopath profile - both his brother and the acting DCI (whose name I can't remember just now) seem more monstrous.

Matilda felt very authentic - she's really not ready to return to work, and she stumbles a bit. The acting DCI might be right, in fact, that she lacks objectivity with regard to Jonathan.

The author doesn't give much away - even though we get into the heads of multiple characters, we can't really trust what they're thinking. Too often, this kind of book becomes more cat-and-mouse than mystery, because we already know who the murderer is, it's written all over his thoughts. Jonathan is more of a cypher, and I liked that aspect.
