theDuke | 6504 comments Forthcoming Themes:

250. "Great TV Show themes" - Choose a song, that was used for a TV show, by an established artist or band. You can use either the track written especially for the show's intro theme itself, or the full original song by the artist/band, if it was edited for the show, whichever. - theDuke
251. 'The Wire's' 100 (+30) Records That Set The World On Fire While No One Was Listening. https://rateyourmusic.com/list/funks/...
Compiled from an internal poll of the magazine's writers, this is a wide ranging eclectic list - mostly albums but including several singles. There should be something for most people. Preferably choose from the original 100, but go to the extra 30 if you can't find anything! - Tim
252. Silent break: Any track where the music stops suddenly, then restarts. - Fishy Jim
253. Deck of cards - Songs that reference playing cards or card games (standard 52 card deck ). - KJS
254. Brush up your Shakespeare - any song or artist that has even the remotest connection with The Bard - could be in part of a lyric, just coincidence with a character's name, etc. - Val
255. Joker - any song referencing joker/joke or any variant thereof - Brass Neck
256. "Psyche me out!" Don ya hippy locks, flares, jesus beards & chuck in a tab of acid or two....and let's float away on some groovy 'shroom loaded magical mystery tour! Any kind of psychedelic music; from the hippy dippy folk, acid rock, psyche rock, thu to stoner, produced from the 1960s to the present day. Brownie points if you can pick a less well known track. Peace & love maan! - theDuke
257. Duets, real or imagined. Standard duets or songs that have been sung as a solo singer mixed with somebody singing the same song to create a duet. - TheFoe
258. The Swinging Sixties 1960-1969 - Jemma
259. There's a storm coming: songs by, about or featuring any of the following: Atiyah, Brendan, Ciara, Dennis, Ellen, Francis, Gerda, Hugh, Iris, Jan, Kitty, Liam, Maura, Noah, Olivia, Piet, Róisín, Samir, Tara, Vince, Willow
260. There's a tropical storm coming: any song or artist's name featuring the words hurricane, typhoon, cyclone, willy-willy (those wacky antipodeans; a singular willy or willie will do) or (not tropical I know but opens up more options) tornado - Brass Neck
261. Kurt Cobain's "Top 50" - pick a track from one of Kurt Cobain's (supposedly) favourite albums - https://rateyourmusic.com/list/JoeyX/... - Helen

Hello all.

Tech gets to step up to the theme podium and put his interesting concept to play. I understand the concept...but by gad..it's a toughie to choose a nom for it. There's a lotta songs out there...where does one start??!

Anyhoo, here be what the Scottish Rasta one wishes you to put forward:

'Your Dennis Hopper Moment'

And for more info on what that is..here's what the man himself posted on noms thread:

Perspective? ok, seeing you asked so nicely.
the inspiration that got me here came from sera's 'take it to the break' theme, whereby, i instantly thought of a song which has two such proclamations (running into, yes, guitar breaks!). both of these passages, for me, are also 'Dennis Hopper Moments', extra special passages of music that push you to draw back your lips, clench your teeth and close your eyes tightly in ecstasy, much like dennis does in 'blue velvet' when dean stockwell mimes roy orbison's 'in dreams'. ok, not everyone has seen 'blue velvet' (what's wrong with you?), so here is a reference point,

https://youtu.be/d0PbwLTLKA4

right? i want to hear your Dennis Hopper moments - could be a guitar break, a drum beat, a vocal passage, it could even be the whole song (tho' your lips would be aching after that), bits of songs that are just perfect for you, and drive you over the edge in paroxysms of pure joy. please forward the whole song but outline the passages that engender the D H moment(s)

here is one example i would use, but can't (due to sonic issues) - the second where keith hudson's 'not good for us' drops into the dub passage 'formula', drops with such heavenly ethereal precision that it gives me a D H moment - it can't be used because the cd, the download, and the yt clip have a devastating separating 'click' at that precise juncture (only the vinyl is true).

This is all i will say on the subject - don't come back to me and say you've never had a D H moment! if this is the case, throw away your music and collect stamps! x

Rightio...nice 'n' clear then..so let's get on with it, noms and links as you like, thanksa muchy.

TTFN.

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Tech, do you want people to give the time of the DH moment along with the link?

e.g. The key & time change in The Gates of Delirium - Yes

https://youtu.be/EdmUAsU2eXI (12:35-12:55)

That's not my nomination, by the way.

message 3: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments if you wish, if not a description of the DH moment will suffice.

'the gates of delirium'? that the name of the yes fan club?

message 4: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments okeedokee,

from scratch's versioning of 'war ina babylon'. the moment the horns emerge like cascading aural velvet, evocative of distant thunder, as if played by entities more than human. an example of scratch's unpredictable genius, and a definite DH moment!

One of the first, if not THE first, song that truly moved me as a child (let's say around six years old). I love the whole song, but if there's a moment, maybe it's the harmonies on "and it's my mind, and there's no time, when I'm alone"

Can't recall if I have nominated this for something else in the past, but who cares. The entire guitar solo from 4:02 to the end of the track is wonderful.

TheFoe | 2646 comments After Fishy Jim,

A pure 'put the pedal to the metal' moment at 0.27, when the guitar seems to take off in this nearly 100% instrumental that then turns into slow stoner rock, is my Dennis Hopper moment, one where I envisage me opening a throttle on a cool looking motorbike. Sadly my relationship with motorcycles saw me kiss the tarmac more times than the Pope. ;-(

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments So many to choose from but I'll go for this one which was definitely a "you had to be there, particular time, place (& other err, things) thing". This is the only version of the right mix I can find on YouTube & unfortunately it has some bad skips on it, nevermind. The best bit for me is from the 3min 20 mark after you've been ravin' to the whole track & then it sort of breaks down & then builds back up again....yeh, hard to explain, not expecting anyone else to get it or vote for it.

theDuke | 6504 comments There are two definitive albums in my collection, which I have always regarded as THE top albums of all time; Pink Floyd's DSOTM & The Beatles Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Love both of them from start to finish. The Beatles have already been nom'd.....so yep..sorry Tech..it's gotta be the sublime opening tracks of DSOTM..which is of course..

It's that heartbeat that does it for me..followed by the glorious screeching burst into Breathe.

And yes..i have realised, that it's technically three songs..but you'd never play these separately.

PS: woz at this concert! :)

After wrestling with a number of possible contenders, I apologise for going for a rather obvious choice. A great anthem from 1970, I remember clearly the first time I heard it. Keeping up with popular music wasn’t always easy in Rhodesia. However there was one particular radio show that went out about mid-day on Saturdays where DJ Martin Locke played the latest from the UK and US. I was ferrying my mum around town in my little 1960 VW Beetle when he played the new S & G song. It’s a wonder I didn’t crash! It was so different, so uplifting, so perfect. It isn't my favourite S & G song, it might even struggle to make the top 5, but it affected me (and many others too) in the same way that Bohemian Rhapsody would five years later. "Bridge" doesn't get as much airplay on radio as the Queen song these days, but it is still one of "the greats". It starts with Artie's angelic voice singing to a simple piano accompaniment; halfway through the strings quietly kick in and then the harmonies start at 3:20. I think the main DH moment for me is when Hal Blaine's drums kick in at 3:40 sending Artie's voice soaring to the climax at 4:30.

Brass Neck | 3979 comments The only song that ever brought a tear to my cynical eyes; I spent a good hour the other day just playing other people's covers of it on YouTube. Not many songs get a different take by the same artist on their consecutive albums, the2nd Sailin' Shoes version being much the better and fully justifying the re-recording.

I think I might have misunderstood the concept. I was choosing something with a particular few 'heartstopping' seconds/ minutes but judging from Tim's comment, other people seem to have chosen whole songs.

theDuke | 6504 comments Hello folks...and that concludes another round.

All well known songs making the grade this week, so who gets a place on the podium this week?

Topping the bill, is 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Simon & Garfunkel, with 22 points. The glorious crowning champion therefor...we had Lez last week..and now it's Val's turn! Congratulations ma'am!

Next up, with 18 points on the board, it's those wrinkly rockers with 'Gimme Shelter' by The Rolling Stones, thus KJS takes the middle position.

And finally, with 1 point fewer, but there's definately a place on podium for Tim, as his nom 'There's A Place' by The Beatles, earns him the 3rd placement.

Well done to the winners...not a bad round that.

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments Hey, man, you don't talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he'll... uh... well, you'll say "hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you. He won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say, "Do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you"... I mean I'm... no, I can't... I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's... he's a great man! I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas...

Fishy_Jim | 1287 comments Point of order:
There were only meant to be 4 votes and Brass Neck gave 5. Therefore his last vote would be discounted and the rest would get a point less, which means that the Stones would have 17 points and so they would be joint second with The Beatles.

theDuke | 6504 comments Duly noted Jim, i obviously hadn't spotted that.

So a quick recap then.....I'll split the silver between Tim & KJS...and a new third placement goes to Be Bop Deluxe's nominator, which happens to be Fishy Jim!

I like what you did there FJ! ;-)

Right i hope that's all sorted.

Fishy_Jim | 1287 comments To be honest, I don't consider my nom to be third, there were three others that scored more.
