Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments I read a review and excerpt maybe 10 or so years ago about a book that was written in 1st person from a dog's point of view. The dog called its owner "the one with the food" or something like that. I thought at the time that I'd like to read it, but I forgot the name.

The Art of Racing in the Rain? I haven't read it, but it could fit your description.

message 5: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments It's not The Art of Racing in the Rain; might be A Dog's Life by Peter Mayle--I have to find a copy or an excerpt to be sure. I'll check back later...

Leigh (libraryleigh) | 1 comments Timbuktu by Paul Auster?

message 7: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments I don't think it's that one, Leigh. Guess I should have said, the dog's owner is a young to middle aged guy. And it's actually written in 1st person dog with limited knowledge. So far my best guess it that it's A Dog's Life. I ordered a copy through our library, but it'll be a few days before I get it. Another close one in mood is Dog On It, but I don't think that's it--the dog has too much "people knowledge", like knowing their names.

Kitty | 320 comments The Art of Racing in the Rain is told by a dog.

Clare (-clare-) | 13 comments You Are a Dog: Life Through the Eyes of Man's Best Friend maybe? He refers to people as He who.... Or She who.... Etc

message 10: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments I'll check that one out too, Vespertine. Thanks. BTW, if you add A Dog's Purpose, this list is already better than the "Adult Fiction Narrated by a Dog" list (link in post above)--I haven't read all those on that list, but The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time isn't even narrated by the dog; in fact, the dog is dead.

I removed it.

Diana Welsch | 530 comments Is it possible that you're thinking of The Dark Gentleman by G.B. Stern? It's a very old book, but it's narrated by dogs who refer to their owners as "the Legs."

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments I think The Dark Gentleman is too old to be the one I'm thinking of.

Nop's Trials for Mindy's link.

message 16: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments Read some excerpts, and I don't think it's Nop's Trial. Thanks, Lobstergirl.

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments Finished Peter Mayles "A Dog's Life" and, although it wasn't the one I was looking for, it was very good--enjoyed it a lot! I bought "You Are a Dog" on Amazon, but won't receive it for a while. I can see I'm going to have to make a list to keep track of these!

message 18: by Tab (new)

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Another to look at is Angus: A Novel Angus A Novel by Charles Siebert . It's a fictional "memoir" about a dog. He calls his owners "Huge-Head" and "Sweet-Voice"

message 19: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments Ooh! That does sound promising, Tab. I'll add it to my list.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyinmn) | 70 comments Solved! Thanks for all the suggestions; it is definitely You Are a Dog, and what a fun read that is!
