Dwight | 58 comments This was a series of books, Choi you own adventure style (different brand and publisher than CYOA though) game books. They had a dice rolling requirement to make choices.

Fantasy based, very D&D type (although not under the D&D brand either). The protagonist was a warrior with (I think) some magic. I think his name started with a T but I’m not sure. It was an ogling story arc from oil to book, and I think there were about five or so in the series.

Lots of black on the covers, paperback. I would have read these at least 30 years ago.

The plot lines outlines the adventurer teaming up with people and creatures. One plot involved a deadly maze to get through. One involved having to deal with an insane kingdom where it turned out cannibalism had flourished.

The artwork was fairly dark. Black covers if I remember correctly. Heavy subject material.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5384 comments Is it the Fighting Fantasy series? Several of them involve mazes, although I can't find one about cannibalism. They do require dice.

Maybe the "Bloodsword" books (there's five of them in total):

Titus Medio | 4 comments OK I'm probably not helping here, but I'll throw this out there.

There was a fantasy game series called The Fantasy Trip ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fan... ) by Steve Jackson Games. There were two main component games, Melee and Wizard. These spawned a series of sort-of CYOA modular games, and that's what made me think of this in your description.

This may help too ( https://thefantasytrip.game/site/asse... )

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5384 comments The books Dwight is looking for are at least thirty years old.

Titus Medio | 4 comments This game was around 30 years ago when I played it in the 80s

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5384 comments Oh, okay.

Dwight | 58 comments Wow! The Fighting Fantasy series is another one I’ve read, although it’s not the one I was looking for here. Thanks for that!

Dwight | 58 comments Thank you for the Blood Sword suggestion, unfortunately it isn’t those. It’s a singular named character as protagonist. Some type of warrior, I cannot recall the name.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5384 comments Is it the Lone Wolf series (Rob’s suggestion, looks promising) or the Fantasy Trip game (Titus’s suggestion)?

Jon Duckworth | 171 comments Crikey, I'd forgotten about those Lone Wolf books. I used to love those and Fighting Fantasy :)

It's probably not the Knightmare series (although that does feature the character of Treguard) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Then there's the Firewolf saga (it's usual for gamebooks to be first person "YOU are the hero", but in these you do play as the character of Firewolf. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

Here are a few others from the same period that I remember playing/reading...

Combat Heroes series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Grailquest series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

Way of the Tiger series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Golden Dragon series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
