I went into this book blind, so I wasn't expecting anything. It was so good and nothing I could have expected. I don't remember a single moment where the book was "slow". It was full of action or suspense from the very first page.
The story line follows a couple of people, but mainly it follows Barry Sutton, a detective in the NYPD who is just trying to figure out what to do with the life that he has ended up with. Divorced with a daughter that has been gone for over a decade, he's holding on to his anger and it's messing him up, he's let himself go.
It then hops to Helena in the past. A brilliant researcher who is studying something close to my heart... memories, to help her mom with Alzheimer's. An eccentric tech mogul hires her to continue her research without boundaries and she accepts. She's flown to an oil rig way offshore which starts to feel more and more like a prison as the days and then years go on... then things change.
It was a little bit predictable, but there were a lot of surprises. The writing was easy and just flowed. I did get uncomfortable at one point during a plot twist because I looked at the book and there were so many pages left! That meant to wasn't close to wrapping up in a tidy little bow like I like, that's just when things went to complete sh*t! It was during that time that I may have looked to see if someone was alive later in the book. Definitely not a complaint, just means it's good! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am now a fan of Blake Crouch!!!
