Yes, I was totally shocked when I originally went looking for the Sandman graphic novels. I had no idea of the prices.

Kristie | 19148 comments I just read this announcement, “The songwriters behind Disney’s Frozen have announced their next project will be the movie musical adaptation of 'The Prince and the Dressmaker' an award-winning graphic novel about a genderqueer prince #NOH8” I may have to read that graphic novel for this challenge now.

@Rusalka: I really loved Maus! It was a whole different way to read about the Holocaust.

Somehow I missed the Maus recommendation. I have that on my maybe read list too. I'll have to add it to my new list of graphic novels I want to read.

message 64: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11630 comments I've requested I Am Not Okay With This and The Prince and the Dressmaker from the library but there are queues for both so might not get them in time.

I've also downloaded some children graphic novels, also from the library, The Clockwork Crow and Harriet the Invincible. They sound cute and being aimed at kids I'm hoping the print might be clear and readable for me :-)

message 65: by Cherie (last edited Feb 29, 2020 05:16PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I struck out at my library looking for Fables & Reflections and cannot locate the copy of Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened that I thought I had at home.

I did manage to find a book that looks interesting. I am going to read Passing for Human: A Graphic Memoir Passing for Human A Graphic Memoir by Liana Finck . The cover is the only part with color. All of the pictures and text are black and white line drawings and one whole section is done on black paper with white text and white lines. It is a biography of the artist. It called to me.

message 66: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I've picked up these 3 from the library

The Marvels
Stitches
Wytches, Volume 1

I will probably read all 3 since I like graphic novels and haven't been reading much lately

message 68: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments I got both Hey, Kiddo and The Prince and the Dressmaker from the library. So, it's one of those. I may end up reading them both if time allows.

I've just noticed that this is available on Kindle Unlimited so I may read this in addition to Nimona.

message 74: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments Do people have trouble with reading graphic novels on ebooks? I tried one once, but it was so tiny I couldn't read it. No adjustment to font size helped. That put me off trying another.

message 75: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I don't want to try it on my ereader Janice. The screen is small so I don't think I could read the text, unless I zoom in all the time and that's annoying. And my ereader is black and white, so reading a graphic novel in colour would mean missing out on a lot.

I just tried it on my tablet and that seems to work well! One full page on the screen and still large enough to read.

message 76: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Glad it's working out on your tablet, Peggy!

Janice wrote: "Do people have trouble with reading graphic novels on ebooks? I tried one once, but it was so tiny I couldn't read it. No adjustment to font size helped. That put me off trying another."

I would always prefer to read a graphic novel in physical format but as they can be quite expensive, and my library's selection is pretty poor, I tried using my tablet, and it worked out just fine. I wouldn't use my e reader as it is too small and not in colour.

message 78: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments I have a large first gen Kindle Fire HD (8.5" i think) and the screen is almost as big as a standard graphic novel page, so it works great. I couldn't read one on my smaller Kindle Fire and definitely not on my phone.

Honesty, with the size of the fonts in some graphic novels combined with all of the other stuff going on on the page, I have to hold even physical graphic novels a smidge closer sometimes.

message 79: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments I tried to read one on my iPad which is a bit smaller than your Kindle Fire, Lucy. It's about 7". Maybe it was just the book I chose.

My library loan has been in transit for 8 days. The lending library is a 2-3 hour drive away. Good grief. I shouldn't mind since I can't read it right away, but it makes me shake my head.

message 80: by Lucy (last edited Mar 06, 2020 01:08AM) (new)

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments The small Kindle Fire we have we sort of inherated, for lack of a better term, and it's about 7" and I'm constantly suprised by the difference between the two when it comes to readability etc. That 1.5" makes a big difference, evidently.

If you don't mind reading on your PC or laptop I'm fairly certain there are multiple programs/apps that can be installed to read graphic novels that way. Or the Kindle app for PC would also work if its a Kindle title. Then you would have a bigger screen to work with.

I have a physical copy of the book I'm reading for this challenge, its very colorful and beautiful, but I just got through a part that had a lot of black text on dark blue and purple background and I think my eyes are wishing I'd just go back to black text on a white background. so, yeah, individual stories can have their own issues.

Hope you get your loan soon, I know the feeling. I'm always wondering when my loans are going to come through even though I'm usually a couple books away from actually being able to read them.

message 81: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my graphic novel book this evening. I will report it tomorrow.

There was a section in my book that was done on black paper with white lines and white text. My eyes were glad to get back to the white paper with black text and black line drawings too, Lucy. 😊

Hope you enjoy it! The Sandman is top notch. Was thinking of rereading them soon, now that I've read the prequel.

I've watched the first few episodes and I quite like it. I need to get back to it but I got sidetracked by RuPaul's Drag Race series.

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments Lucy wrote: "Hope you enjoy it! The Sandman is top notch. Was thinking of rereading them soon, now that I've read the prequel. .."

I started it last night and I'm having a bit of a re-learning curve. I used to read comic books all the time when I was a kid. One of my favourites was Ripley's Believe it or Not.

At first, my reaction was, "what is going on?" But I think I'm starting to settle into it.

message 89: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments Yes, you do get sort of dropped into things in Preludes & Nocturnes. The prequel helps explain some of that, but other aspects would probably be confusing without having read the original series. Hopefully you enjoy it enough to make it that far some day!

And I learned something new today, I did not realize Ripley's was a comic series!

message 90: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think it took me reading three volumes of the Sandman before I figured out what was going on.

Ooo I can see your thinking, but I mean visual artist for this challenge. Unless Elton is an visual artist too, and then I think he is just overachieving. But my googlings say his songwriter is, not him. Sorry!

message 94: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11630 comments I picked up Heartstopper: Volume One for 90p and I'm 40% through it already. I didn't realise graphic novels contained so few words - Rus, I've once again learned something from one of your challenges.

I'm still not convinced that this is a medium I will fall in love with, at least in digital download form. The story is okay but I'm not loving the graphics.

message 95: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Heh I am glad you are learning things. I'm sorry you don't like the art. A lot of ones I've read even though they don't have as many words, I spend a lot of time looking at the pictures instead of reading the words.

message 96: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I so enjoy graphic novels. Some are better. Don't give up on just one. I did the Handmaids Tale. I had read the book and seen the TV show. The graphic novel added something that the other mediums didn't have. I am glad I read it

message 97: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments I ended up reading Hey, Kiddo in addition to The Prince and the Dressmaker. It was good and I'm glad I read it. I don't think graphic novels in general are my favorite, but I like them occasionally.
