SPOILERS ahead!!! He finds out that the afterlife is not all wonderful. There's something insidious so he and his brother start a revolution. One of them dies in the end and they look forward to be reunited in the after-afterlife.

I believe the boy is paraplegic at the start of the novel (when he was still alive).
Thank you Rosa but I don't think so. The setting of the majority of the book is in the (first) afterlife. I don't recall sports being a big theme of the book.
