ABANDONED. Fantasy: druid/mage in a tower and maybe alchemical fireworks?

Looking for an English (not necessarily British, but American English) fantasy novel likely published in the 90s because I read it between 1998 - 2003.

It was about a woman who was captive in a tower with a druid/mage who made alchemical fireworks and was in some way a captive himself. Naturally they fall in love and it's amazing.

I've been looking for years and only recently forgave my parents for pitching it out ;)
