Claire Chibi | 1826 comments I bring back an obscene amount of manga with me every time I go to Japan, since it takes me so long to read them I still have a huge supply left even though I haven't been back in years.

Oh yeah Kanji is a pain, I'm lucky in that I can speak/read a fair bit of Chinese already so I can make a pretty good guess for a lot of Kanji. I do still find it extremely tricky since the meanings of the same characters can be different between the languages.

Thank you for the recommendation, I will check it out! :D

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments I would love to go to Japan just to buy manga!!!!!!!!!!!!! Specifically Skip Beat!, Vol. 01 by Yoshiki Nakamura

You are very lucky. Chinese is one of the languages on my bucket list. It's French, Korean, Japanese and Chinese at the moment. In that order.

So good. Found it first at my library and loved it so I bought it.

Claire Chibi | 1826 comments Omg Skip Beat is such a classic! :D

You could probably find the series super cheap if you went, it's common for bookshops to sell volumes of older series for around 100 yen each.

I watch some kdramas occasionally but I haven't been able to pick up on the language as well as I did with Japanese, Korean uses so many vowels and my brain just can't quite make sense of the words :<

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments It's my all time favorite manga. It kills me each month to wait for it to be translated.

Oooh. That would be cool. I might try to buy volume one on Amazon or something. I own all the currently out books in English but it's such a great manga I'd like to own it in Japanese too.

I love historical k dramas!!!!! I binge watch them and get very sad when I don't have a new one.

I'm not doing bad. The same author of the Japanese book I recommended also has a Korean one Korean From Zero! 1 Proven Methods to Learn Korean with integrated Workbook, MP3 Audio download, and Online Support by George Trombley I own that as well.

I probably have an advantage in that sense since I don't really know any Asian languages well enough to make it harder. :)

message 55: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Holy sh*t. I just searched amazon and the first volume is 143$!?

message 56: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments NM. Just found one for like 15$. lol.

message 57: by Claire (new)

Claire Chibi | 1826 comments Skip Beat is STILL coming out? I had no idea, I thought it ended years ago!

Ooh thank you! Maybe a properly structured book will be of more help to me, I haven't really tried to learn Korean properly, I managed to pick up a lot of Japanese just by watching anime so I kinda expected the same to happen here but it didn't.

Yup. The mangaka hurt her wrist so I think that has slowed her down but the last chapter literally came out like 3 days ago?

It might. I did that when I watched anime a lot. It truly does help but you also need to study as well or else you miss a lot. I have picked up quite a few words from my dramas though. I can sometimes understand a little when there are no subtitles.

message 59: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Oh and I also just learned Skip beat is now an adult. It come out in 2002 so this year it's 18 years old. 🤯 I've been reading it for over 10 years! Maybe 15.

message 60: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Note to self remove HP books from SS. Forgot it was too soon to re-read and have them count. 🤦🏻‍♀️

message 61: by Brittani (new)

Brittani Allen | 399 comments checking in! I'm not sure what I'm going to read yet, but I have a lot of older books that this challenge will be perfect for.

message 62: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments So does everyone know what they are starting with? I am going to be starting with A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas and probably a Vi Keeland book left over from my February BR's.

It will probably take me awhile with ACOMAF. This will be the third time I try to finish it. Lets hope I can do it this time haha. (I always start it over because I never remember where I left off so it will count).

message 63: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments So I have started A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas and Stuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland , but it is almost 1:30 am here. So I wont be up much longer.

Jamie (TheRebelliousReader) (iambrucewayne) I've started Breathless (Old West, #2) by Beverly Jenkins . Definitely going to finish it later today as it is a quick read. Not sure what I'm gonna read next though.

message 65: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments So I got 25% into Stuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland and 5% into A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas . I have to go to bed now so I am not cranky at work.

message 66: by Brittani (new)

Brittani Allen | 399 comments A Whole New World by Liz Braswell The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien
These are the 2 books I'm starting with, but I probably won't start til tomorrow because we are celebrating my dad's birthday today.

Courtney | 16038 comments Finished Stuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland . Just started British Bedmate by Penelope Ward and am still only 5% into A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas . Hopefully I can get a little further before I go to bed.

message 69: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments I finished a book for page points. My first book for a category is half done.

message 70: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments I am still only 5% into A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas and will be starting Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland sometime today. Once I finish one of those (both are being used for 2020) we will only need a 2019 for our first bingo :)

Awesome!

I have a 2019 book I was going to start soon. My reading order right now is:

Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs The Cerulean (The Cerulean Duology, #1) by Amy Ewing Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, #4) by Patricia Briggs Cast in Silence (Chronicles of Elantra, #5) by Michelle Sagara

I'll also be reading my French HP book and listening to the English audio but those don't count. ^_^

message 72: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Cool :) I have a 2019 buddy set up for tomorrow as well. So it looks like we will definitely be getting our first bingo sometime this weekend (if not sooner) :)

message 73: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Definitely.

message 74: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments We also need to find some early 90's books. Those are very blank right now.

message 75: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments OMG OMG OMG! I just found an amazing resource!

Courtney | 16038 comments I have a couple, but they are not buddies so I havent added them yet because I wanna concentrate on the buddies. I should have my buddies caught up by mid month hopefully.

Awesome. That works well because then we can concentrate on just filling the missing spots. ^_^

message 78: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments I have The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde that I need to add because it is a buddy. I just forgot to put it up. It does work for EVERY period though so I am not sure where to put it.

message 79: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments I have it under 93-95 for it on my list.

message 80: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Courtney wrote: "I have it under 93-95 for it on my list."

I think that would be the best spot right now. :)

message 81: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Okay :) I will add it now.

message 82: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments I just realized I can count manga for this! Woohoo! I'll see if I can find any I want to read for the 90's and also I will be reading some for the early 2000's. :)

message 83: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments I found several from the 90's. Nothing from the 80's sadly. I will try to read some based on how much time I have and availability. The good thing is that I can potentially read the 600 pages in like 2 hours with manga.

message 84: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments I just found a buddy I can join for Murder at the Vicarage (Miss Marple, #1) by Agatha Christie . It looks like it is with Claire so it will get us even more points.

message 85: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Im going to use it for 1991 so we can fill another spot.

message 86: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Ashleigh do you have a buddy for The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson ? If not I can do it with you.

message 87: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Awesome!

message 88: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments I just had a scary experience. :(

Just saw a very small cat like maybe only 1-2 yeas old almost or maybe even did get hit by a car! I'm still in shock. Seems to be okay. Couldn't find it and it ran off.

message 91: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments I will be done with my 2020 book in about 30 minutes which will give us our first bingo.

message 93: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Goals for today.

Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs review and post for 2008.
Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, #4) by Patricia Briggs I would like to say start and finish but I'll be happy if I get any reading done. :/

Bonus Goals:
Read 25 pages of my French HP book.
Listen to some of my HP 2 book.
Read some manga. Probably Skip Beat!, Vol. 01 by Yoshiki Nakamura --- Skip Beat!, Vol. 24 by Yoshiki Nakamura

message 94: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Thats a lot of reading Book. Good luck :)

I have work in a couple hours, but I am still hoping to catch up on my buddy read for A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas (I am like 10 chapters behind now I think. I am currently listening to it so Im not sure lol). Plus I have a buddy starting today for Sinful Desire (Sinful Nights, #2) by Lauren Blakely so I would like to start that. It would be nice to finish it as well, but I know thats unlikely.

message 95: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Thanks. The manga will be the easiest. I can read a whole volume in like 5 min. I'll just have to remember to stop after every 3 volumes and make notes or I will go crazy when I have to review it.

message 96: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Yeah thats my biggest issue with doing manga for the challenges. I ended up giving up and either doing status updates or not do any. Lol

message 97: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 16038 comments Who-hoo I am officially further into A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2) by Sarah J. Maas then I have ever been. Its kind of sad I found it hard to get further then 21% into this book until now. Haha

message 98: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Same. But this time I think it will really help. Plus I will be reading them anyway so might as well use em.

Woohoo!

I found that series hard to get into as well. The first book was like a 3 star for me. Sad. It seems really good but then the writing or something throws me off.

It is completely different from the Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas series. For me is was the love triangle between Tamlin, Rhys, and Feyre. Plus I was total Team Tamlin back then. Now both guys are big babies haha. Rhys is getting a bit better now.
