I can't get over how perfectly "Slytherin" describes this main character. Perfectly cunning. And I really can't figure out how the author has made me like her so much! She's so confident in her plan...and something tells me falling in love isn't part of it! (hide spoiler)]

Whew! So much fun. I love how this isn;t your typical do-gooder main character. Nope, she is selfish and goal driven. Kittens and orphans and charity and peasants? Ew. Also brutally wipe out the rebels.
Also my mind is whirling with possibilities on who killed the previous King and Queen. What happens if the Shawdow King touches you? Do you DIE? Is THAT what killed the King and Queen? (hide spoiler)]

Yeah! Normally I'm not about characters like this, but the parallels between this and Young Elites is also very high!

I found out about the movie because it had Anne Hathaway! And I love con-man/heist like movies!

Finished!!! Stayed up way past my bed time for it but WORTH IT.

I'm going to back up a bit and say that their courting was ADORABLE. These "evil" characters are blushing and getting all embarrased for being head over heels in love. Also loved the confession where he's basically like "your evil matches my evil, let's rule the world".

The end was fairly pretictable, we all knew it was a love story. And when she made a point to say that the servants hadn't moved her wardrobe yet I started freaking out like OH NO THE POISON IS IN THERE STOP THEM. But alas Alessandra didn't heed me. I had also got serious creeper vibes from Leandar the whole time. Though I didn't see it coming that he was the long dead brother. I would have liked to know if the old queen was also evil or if she was the only spot of goodness in the family. (hide spoiler)]

I keep saying Alessandra is "evil" but she's really not. A truly evil person would not have reacted the way she did when she realized the little girl in the ballroom was the one putting Kallias in danger. They would not have made the effort to carry her away and then later find her a home in the palace. They would have just killed her. (hide spoiler)]

OMG it is a standalone! I seriously thought it was first in a series, and so I read it like one, but damn it felt like a standalone at the end and I was like 'oh no what's going to happen next'. Wish I'd realised it was a standalone because I'd have loved it even more XD Not often you get YA fantasy standalones anymore!

It is a pity more YA authors don't write standalones, because they are usually really good. Although I enjoy a series, standalones can be even more fun to read.
