My take on it is Jack's dad wanted to save Jack's career since he thought he was throwing it away. Jack wanted to make a point with his actions and didn't like his dad getting in the way. Both were unbelievably stubborn.
I don’t understand why his father needed Jack to thank him for saving his career, so bad that he banned him from the family. It makes me think less of Pat Kincaid.
I admit that I was in Jack's camp on this issue. I think the hospital scene made it clear that Pat (the dad) was more concerned about personal and professional embarrassment than he was about his son, sadly.
Pat and Jack are two sides of the same coin. Both stubborn and proud and determined to do it their way. When Pat stepped in to save Jack's career, Jack was pissed because the family died and was young and idealistic. I wondered why Jack stayed in the service after all. Pat should have ended it, but Jack wasn't ever going to apologize for doing what he thought was right. Jack shouldn't have let his father keep him away from the family.
I commend Jack for not apologizing to his father for doing what he thought was right and thanking him for saving his career. I do understand that his dad was trying to keep him from getting into trouble, but he should have respected Jack's decision. They are both stubborn, but it hurt the whole family.
That’s a key statement, Melissa...it hurt the whole family. Pat should do better by them and take the first step. Looks like Jack had to.
