Ladies & Gentleman, we have a winner! Reading the description, that is definitely it. And the cover seems familiar.
There is no way on earth I ever would have remembered that title, or the author for that matter. I read it in I think 2008. No Audiobook available. Maybe I should reach out to him & see if he wants me to do it. :D

I also remember that as a side effect of the changes they underwent, they all became completely hairless.
It was a very "based on physics as we know it" kind of book. Any ideas?
