Name that book? (Let there be light)

I read a book loaned to me about 10 years ago that was fascinating & I can't remember who the author was or the title, but it takes place in the distant future & there's a race on a planet to select some kids to be trained & discover the secrets to exceeding long distance travel. Essentially, the characters metabolisms all slow down to absurd rates, with one character surviving to the end of this universe & the beginning of the next with him thinking in his head as the new Big Bang occurs "Let There Be Light?"
I also remember that as a side effect of the changes they underwent, they all became completely hairless.
It was a very "based on physics as we know it" kind of book. Any ideas?

Ladies & Gentleman, we have a winner! Reading the description, that is definitely it. And the cover seems familiar.
There is no way on earth I ever would have remembered that title, or the author for that matter. I read it in I think 2008. No Audiobook available. Maybe I should reach out to him & see if he wants me to do it. :D

Wow, what a cover! I’d never have picked up a book looking like that lol. But I read a few reviews and am incredibly curious now. There are apparently an original, though scientifically wrong first edition, and a longer, revised version where the author rewrote the ending according to new research. I’m now so curious about reading the original one!
