How can aetheist understand 'God talk?'

To all you psychologists out there, I wonder if there is some kind of correlation between 'God talk' and the 'collective unconscious,' best practices theory and the like. A great teacher once said and I transcribe grandly 'What man can add four inches to his stature by worrying? If the atheists among us transposed 'God talk,' into some blend of will, humility, confidence, perception would he be terribly off the mark?
Incumbent in this question is this: Even among God believers, there is an amazing divergence in how different people understand the character of God; witness for instance Hinduism. This being the case, it reminds me of the motto of the USA; E pluribus Unum. Out of many; one. In this manner, one might say God is like a touchstone; we may disagree all Codependent No More & Beyond CodependencyBeautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addictionon any number of different issues, but there are at least some standards that we can all agree on. Reducing complicated issues to simple fundamentals doesn't always track true but at least doesn't it give us a frame to hold all the pieces together?
