Kabir Tomer | 13 comments As in the title, it was a collection of tales by the same author (I think) containing stories of the ancient world. I seem to remember that the author's name was "Alexander" something, though i am not sure.

Some of the stories i remember are - "Hannibal's last battle", telling of how Hannibal killed himself rather than let the Romans get him, another story of Hannibal's victory at a swamp, and losing his eye, one about Spartacus and one set in India about the Code of Manu. They were arranged by civilization and timeline.

It was about two inches thick and all stories were from the perspective of one of the characters. I read it about five years ago (2009 or near about) although it was probably older than that.

I would say it was adult as some of the stories were quite dark. The title was something like "Tales of the ancient world" and the cover was yellowish brown I think.

I am sorry if i didn't give enough details, but i don't remember it too well. Thank you in advance if you have any suggestions, it would mean a lot to me.

Where did the book come from? Library, bookstore, sidewalk sale, Costco, drugstore, etc.

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments It was an old library here in India. It's unlikely to help you much.

Maybe not, but sometimes knowing whether something came from Costco vs. an old library in India helps the searcher quite a bit. It sounds like perhaps the author was non-Indian?

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments Yes, I am almost sure he was non Indian. It was in a heap of other drab, boring history books and the only reason I picked it out was because it was a collection of stories by a Greek sounding author, not a textbook. ( I was really into the classical era at the time)

``Laurie (laurielynette) Could the author be G.A. Henty?

When I googled that exact title, this book popped up from Amazon India. Obviously it focuses on Egypt - if that's not your book, does that author's name sound familiar?

Egyptian Wonder Tales of the Ancient World by James Baikie

Egyptian Wonder Tales of the Ancient World by James Baikie

Originally published in 1914.

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments I am pretty sure that it was neither of these. None of the stories had "heroes" in the way Henty's have, and it was quite dark, touching on topics like slavery, bonded labour, torture, etc. and Baikie I have never heard of. The book as I said, covered a large span of history. I recall two more stories, one about Alexander's battle with Porus, and another about a boy in Crete who gets captured by slave galleys. I don't know how much help that will be. I am sorry if I haven't given enough details to pinpoint it, I dont recall it much, but I am sure I will know it when I see it. Thank you for the suggestions, though.

Did the cover have an image on it, or was it just a solid color with title and author?

Ayshe | 4721 comments Tales of the ancient world - Alexander Nemirovsky? I can't find it on goodreads.com, here's link showing the cover:

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments I don't really remember, at all. Just that it was not particularly illustrated, although the cover art of various books is different here in India.

Actually ... that might be it, but I have no way to check, and it seems to be in Russian.

Actually, I found a version of it on amazon, and the cover looks really familiar.

edit: I can't find any description of it anywhere, and what is more it appears to be translated from Russian. If that is so then it was a mighty good translation. I may be influenced by hindsight but I seem to recall that it was very well written...

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments It might actually be Tales of the ancient world - Alexandr Nemirovsky but I can't find anything even remotely close to a description. The closest i could come to is a short blurb in Russian.

Not much description there, either, maybe if you were to contact the library again?

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments Nope, not registered on worldcat, ill try to contact the library but I am unlikely to find it that way ( The "library" is technically just a cheap bookstore that rents out the books.)

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments I am pretty sure at this point that it is the one i am looking for, but not sure enough to order it without confirmation. I have been looking for about 2 hours and no luck. If someone could find even just the table of contents, i would be duly grateful

Ayshe | 4721 comments No, you don't have to be registered on worldcat to see stg special (I added the link just for the few additional bits of information), it's: "a union catalog that itemizes the collections of 72,000 libraries in 170 countries and territories which participate in the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) global cooperative"
It occured to me now that you can enter your location there and it will find the nearest to you libraries that have a copy of the book.

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments no, I think i was a bit unclear , no LIBRARY near me is registered. (If you think that absurd, you have never been to India ;P) I am still looking for any more info. Thanks anyway.

P.S. How did you manage to find it, given how obscure it appears to be ?

message 19: by Ayshe (new)

Ayshe | 4721 comments I found it using the worldcat's advanced search.
I can't help you about the contents, I searched and maybe the following links can be of use to you:
http://tarihvearkeoloji.blogspot.com/... (in Turkish, but I guess you can use online translator)
http://kutlovica.com/detail.php?id_pr... (in Bulgarian, but has 2 more pictures)

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments Thanks a lot! Although the translation was atrocious to say the least ( the further the language from English, the more babelfish is involved) I think this is indeed the book I am looking for. The internet is a wondrous place. The problem is the version I read had no illustrations. This could be due to the fact that most old books here are pirated reprintings. Anyway, now I am intrigued enough to buy it. If this is indeed it, I thank you again, this really means a lot to me.

So i suppose the thread is closed now ? I am still not confirmed, so should I close it or not? ( I have not really been active on this site for long ) :)

We don't close solved threads, but we do move them to Solved and shelve the book which I'm doing now. Just as soon as I finish adding the book to the database.

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments thank you !
I was a bit hesitant in doing it myself as i am not 100 % sure that it is in fact the book i am looking for (it will take quite a while to arrive)

message 23: by Kabir (last edited Dec 15, 2014 10:08PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kabir Tomer | 13 comments Also, I would rather you place it as Adult. As I have mentioned before, it involves slavery, rape, massacres, etc.
Definitely not a children's book, and I would hesitate to say Young adult. I am not certain as for fiction though. Perhaps in POSSIBLY SOLVED ?

Ayshe | 4721 comments I found out that the Arabic edition of the book was actually here on goodreads.com, it even has one review in Arabic :)
ETA: Or some version of the book - it's 100 pages shorter:
