Reminds me very much of George Simenon, but I don't see close match from the books in my list, maybe The Night at the Crossroads had some similarities.

Plot details: A fat guy, who owns an art gallery and deals with stolen artifacts, bargain for a painting or an artifact. The artifact is to be stolen.
A detective stays in a hotel, the same in which the thief stays. The detective is on vacation with his wife. The wife keeps on nagging the detective that why can she not have a peaceful vacation, where he does not bother with criminals. The detective name starts with 'L'.
The author name starts with either 'B' or 'D'.
The book is very short like 200 or 250 pages. This book is of a series books. The author has written many of such books.
In the end there is a suspense with the theft, but I do not want to give the spoiler.
