2020 Cosmere BR (Currently reading: Edgedancer)

I thought I was gonna be done yesterday, but somehow fell asleep while reading haha otherwise there is now way I would be stopping to write my impressions haha but here I am, so I'm gonna write them real quick and continue reading

Haha! Same Lucija same! I'm totally on a mission to finish today! Yeah I don't think I'll check back here til do, it's too good!

Yes and Yes and Yes and Yes... (view spoiler)[where did Shardblades come from, but the Recreance, when the Knights Radiant collectively forsook their oaths, killing their spren (they’re called deadeyes by living spren... they’re like walking corpses in Shadesmar, staying near their Shardblades in the Physical realm)...

Renarin: Sanderson doesn’t write simple Radiants... you’ll learn more about his peculiarities in book 3...

Pattern: now you know most of Shallan’s backstory... there are still irregularities... there’s still a mental block, most fans think... the going theory is that her brother was a Skybreaker, and gave her the training and starter Oaths to get her far enough along the Radiant path to have Pattern become a Shardblade/sprenblade (my term to differentiate)... different orders unlock Shardblades with different Oath numbers...

Elhokar: Cryptics and Honorspren don’t fet along... look at Syl and Pattern during the arena fight... not many chances to interact since with Syl’s deterioration (until recently)

This is also why the Stormfather was so angry with Kaladin... honorspren consider the Stormfather THEIR father and vice versa... he’s the largest chunk of Honor left, after the Splintering/death...

Dalinar just straight up bullied Stormfather into becoming his spren, I loved that haha It seemed to me as if Stormfather wasn't really opposed to the idea from the start, hence giving him the visions...
I'm so excited to learn about all the orders and their powers
And Jasnah is back yaay I loved how she came back and was just ready to fix everything
Syl and Kaladin back together and that whole fight with Szeth was so good. I'm so glad to see them back together.
Adolin, boy, what did you do. I was so surprised by that one, honestly that was so unexpected it shook me the most lol
Elokhar hiding with the Herdanzians was the best haha and Lopen! I'm so happy for him, he's gonna get all the ladies hahah
And woah it was Shallan all along. But it wasn't that unexpected. With how much she was trying to suppress it, I was already imagining all kinds of things, this one being among them.
That man in black is a herald, huh wouldn't have thought that and oooohhhh Nightblood is there
And somehow I didn't think Amaram would value his friendship with Dalinar so highly. (hide spoiler)]

So, if Stormfather is the largest chunk of Honor left, it is so fitting that he gets to be Dalinars spren.

Ahh yeah, that would make sense about Shallan, now I don't know what's going to happen in book 3, but we did only learn about Shallans life after she already spoke the oaths

And about Elhokar. I'm looking forward to see what happened with his Cryptics, did Kaladin somehow scare them off (hide spoiler)]

godspren are linked to the Bondsmiths, of which there can be 3... another godspren is the Nightwatcher... and people think the 3rd might be that thing in the water from the first Axios the Collector interlude... we don't think the 3rd godspren is linked to Odium... that wouldn't be good...

Sometimes characters get 1-2 flashbacks in later books... Kaladin gets one in book 3 that explores Narah, I think...

LOPEN... Lopen is what gives me hope for Rysa's back (even tho I think Sanderson has dashed my hopes in book 3 or Q&As, already... Rysa still has a role to play, tho, and a coming novella between books 3 & 4...

Also, now you know a bit about Squires... those underlings of a Knight that gain abilities within close proximity... also good candidates for future Knights... Bridge Four are Kaladin's squires, but not all bridgemen...

Dalinar/Stormfather: Dalinar's relationship to the Stormfather is different than Kaladin/Shallan/Lift's... but he still gets to do some epic things... just wait for book 3... 2nd favorite scene incoming near the end of book 3... I call it The Clap (have fun trying to decipher that :D) (not the STD/STI)

Jasnah: that short story I mentioned, that shows he Elsecalling into Shademar to survive: https://www.tor.com/2014/08/06/storml...

Also shows the difference in her skill to soulcast stubborn objects, compared to Shallan :D

Darkness: Nale, Nalan, Herald of the Skybreakers, mad as a duck... thinks that killing Radiants will prevent the next Desolation... he's the new worst...

Now that Szeth is changing/evolving, I think you can see the beginnings of why Szeth/Lift would be a great comedy duo... his stoic attitude and her flightiness...

Syl/Kaladin: living spren are so much more versatile than Shardblades... letting Kaladin make a Shardspear... and i think the windspren will become Shardplate, when he unlocks the ability (unconfirmed)...

Sons of Honor are Gavilar/Amaram's group... they thought bringing back the Voidbringers would bring back the Heralds & Knight Radiant maybe, and restore Vorinism to religious dominance... this is what got Gavilar killed...

Diagramists think the world is screwed...

Ghostbloods have similar goals to Sons of Honor, but also seem to have vaster Cosmere knowledge... they even recruit agents from the 17th Shard

17th Shard: an interplanetary group of worldhoppers that generally believe in nonintervention, and thwarting Hoid's interventionist tendencies... the 3 worldhoppers looking for Hoid in that remote village in book 1 are members (Grump, Thinker, Blunt) (Gallodon, Demoux, Baon)

Iyatil was a 17th Sharder before becoming a Ghostblood... if i remember correctly, that's Mraize's partner/boss... born in Shadesmar, descended from Scadrial (Mistborn)... all this stuff comes from Q&As, so I'm not really spoiling the books... (hide spoiler)]

I also spend around half an hour to read all your comments and really enjoyed them! Some really great thoughts among them! Instead of trying to catch up answering to everything, I will continue with Part 4 now :D Otherwise I'll fall behind even more...

Seems some of the crew could have escaped (Yalb hopefully) and I loved the difference between her handling of the rope and Shallan's handling of the stick, Jasnah has such a commanding air about her. Finished!!! So I didn't manage it yesterday, even though I was reading for a lot of the day, I had to admit defeat at half 2 and go to bed even though I only had 10 pages left lol. I blame it on the fact that I tend to pace myself when it gets really good, cos if I whizz through it I kinda feel like I cheated myself at the end if that makes sense?? Haha (I'm weird, I know)

Ahhh, it was so good though! I love it when it builds towards the end and he mixes viewpoints within chapters, makes it so much more exciting! So much going on and so many reveals!! Typical Sanderson, creates as many questions as he answers lol

(view spoiler)[I'm actually really impressed at how Dalinar went about finding the truth about Amaram! So glad Kaladin got his closure!

Shallan revealing to Dalinar she could use Stormlight- so good and felt happy for Dalinar that he finally had his proof.

Shen reappearing in warform and was actually a spy!! No wonder he felt bad in that last talk with Kaladin! I'm so glad Bridge 4 immediately claimed him though.

Did not expect that visit from Elhokar to Kaladin and everything he said about wanting to be a good king but not knowing how. Kaladin's right, it would be better for everyone if he stepped down. I know he tries but if even he realises he's not a natural leader then he should do what's best. Also he mentioned that Kaladin scared the spren away from him, so that means his powers haven't manifested yet....

Moash is such a bastard!!! But we knew he was going to end up doing something back-stabby. Trying to kill Kaladin and punching him in Shardplate!! What a coward! I'm so glad Kaladin finally came to all those realisations, they were a long time coming! And Syl coming back and forming into a shardblade in his hands was very cool. That whole scene was awesome when his powers came back to him.

Why do Amaram and Gavilar wan the Heralds to return?

Why would this Nin guy- a Herald- be tracking and killing people who can use Stormlight/ might be potential Radiants?? Ah, he bought Szeth back to life and made him a Radiant! I wonder what he's going to do now, or if he'll still be hunting and killing people cos this Herald doesn't seem very benevolent.. not sure what his deal is.

Shardblades are dead spren?! Didn't expect that! Explains where Shallan got hers from and why she can summon it so quickly. I began to suspect towards the end that she killed her mother. Like wow. And her father protected her but became a monster because of that secret, tragic.

Adolin killed Sadeas!!! So glad that snake of a man got what he deserves!

Lopen managed to absorb Stormlight! So funny that it was him that did it, he always believed it could be possible. And it's going to heal his arm! Bridge 4, they're starting to use it too, I wonder how they managed that without spren?? It's going to be interesting seeing them learn to use their powers...

That whole scene with Kaladin flying down just in time to save Dalinar and the rest was amaze!! I kinda wished they had witnessed his fight with Szeth just to see how awesome he is, but obviously trying to avoid being killed by two storms and all lol.. I was really waiting on a follow-up conversation between him and Dalinar about him being able to use Stormlight and finally revealing and stuff.. wanted there to be more of a reaction from Dalinar and Adolin after all this long and he's finally revealed it, though Shallan did a steal a bit of his thunder lol.

I find it a but unfair that Dalinar went through the process of being bonded to a spren and taking in Stormlight so easily, I feel like he should have worked for it and had to puzzle it out like Kaladin and Shallan lol. And now Renarin's one too! I never would have guessed that! I was wondering what was going on with him when he was in that chamber with Shallan.

I guess the Parshendi they were fighting on the Shattered Plains have all been destroyed by the two storms then?? It didn't really say what happened to them. (But obviously there's still the Parshmen which will turn into the voidbringers). And Eshonai, she might not be dead, she fell into that chasm with her Shardplate didn't she...

I was wondering why Dalinar asked everyone to move from the warcamps to Urithuru... was it to prove that he was right all along? So he could bring them all together to prepare for the Everstorm's effects?

There was so much going on though, I bet I'm going to forget all lot of details by the next book lol. (hide spoiler)]

Really loved it, I can't wait to get to Oathbringer now! Do you have to read Edgedancer in between or it doesn't really matter? -I'm assuming that's a story in it's own...

I'm not sure abut the guy, you can't really see his face, Though it can't be Dalinar, I imagine him much more heavier-framed than that... He's too far back to really tell if it's Adolin either.

It's better to read Edgedancer before Oathbringer... it's a relatively standalone story, so it CAN be skipped... but it contains more info on Lift and (view spoiler)[Szeth and Nale/Darkness... and many of Lift's scenes in book 3 are her being seen through the eyes of other characters, so it's good to know what's been happening in "Gawx-town"... (forget the name of that region)... (hide spoiler)]

The one element I do want to talk on is Dalinar: (view spoiler)[while his first oath was easy, he has much bumpier road ahead... his backstory/flashbacks are kind of my least favorite, so far... not because they're bad, but because they're painful to read, even on re-read... the man Dalinar was and the man he is now are 2 very different people... remember the Dalinar of Gavilar's death, the man too drunk to defend his king... wallowing in the death of his wife...

Once you guys finally read book 3, I can finally start discussing the Nightwatcher and SHSHSHSHS (this is a bit of joke on Dalinar's wife... that's what the audio sounds like anytime Dalinar fails to hear her name, but I'm actually talking about someone else here... someone equally as important as the Nighwatcher) (hide spoiler)]

Fascinating. Honestly it's all so vast and there's so many connected threads I can barely comprehend it. What a mind, Sanderson lol. I wouldn't worry about spoiling the other books I probably won't remember by the time I get round to reading them.. (hide spoiler)]

I think as bookcovers I also prefer the UK ones, most of the times I don't like "realistic" people on book covers :D
But the US ones are a real piece of art! Take a look at the WoR Cover after reading the book!

Spoilers from 69 to 76
(view spoiler)[Chapter 69 it's funny seing them decive each other. It's going to be fun when they find out the are radiants
Chapter 71 I loved seeing a little of tefts past. His loyalty to kaladin. How dalinar will be surprised when kaladin appears.

So kaladin almost admitted that there was as if something was making him disagree with shallan everytime. so maybe that is syls influence against the cryptics. And poor syl...please don't be dead. I loved that moment when kaladin was like your life is sunshine shallan and then she basically admitted that it doesn't. It was great. And kaladin even cheered up. He started making jokes. Wow, what a change.

Chapter 72the blade shines like in dalinars visions? So it's not tainted like syl
said? They how shallan came to have it?

I almost forgot that balat was hurt in a leg. I wonder how it relates to shallans sword. Maybe her father's men found him after he escaped.

Chapter 73 so her father hurt balat. I did not expect that. And shallan poison and strangled him. What cowards her brothers are. She should have used a sword, far less messy I guess. It doesn't explain her sword. I guess she bonded when her mother died.

Chapter 74 oh, no. Syl! She is broken. Could kaladin mend her? Find her or find the words?
Kaladin now knows about shallan being a radiant. He has clues but shallan doesn't, so I guess he would have to tell her if he finds syl again.
So touching. They tell their stories. Except the spren of course. I don't know how shallan will react to knowing that kaladin killed helaran, now that they are friends.

Interlude
I12 things are worse in alethkar than I expected and Pai just make them worse
I13 I don't like venli. She doesn't tell eshonai enough.
I14 so helaran was a radiant. That's why he went away iguess.
Taravagian is like multiple people, depending on his intelligence. And he is trying to unite them just like dalinar. And gavilar had the same visions as dalinar...

Chapter 76 I'm surprised. I knew some details were being ignored but apparently not. That week that dalinar was ill was odd to me at the time, the pov of telnel when dalinar said that they keep that sword...I completely forgot that. But all the details make sense. On reread I'll pay more attention that's for sure.

Some of this stuff should be spoilered... Warbreaker should be read before Oathbringer, even more than Edgedancer, because more elements start leaking into Stormlight Archive... namely another MC of the that book...

I still think there's plenty of time to read Edgedancer, Warbreaker, and Oathbringer before book 4 comes out in November... book 2 went faster than book 1...

Not sure if the 3.5 novella is releasing before book 4... I think it's slated for December, or maybe that's just a Kickstarter wiggle room date, and it'll be out in October?

Chapter 73 so her father hurt balat. I did not expect that. And shallan poison and strangled him. What cowards her brothers are.

I know, I thought that too. I know they're messed up but they didn't do anything to defy him.

So touching. They tell their stories. Except the spren of course. I don't know how shallan will react to knowing that kaladin killed helaran, now that they are friends.

I thought that was a nice moment too, even though they were in a life-threatening situation. Nice to see Kaladin open up and make himself vulnerable to another person. Well, I don't think she'll be best pleased that it was him and I think it's bound to come out somehow. (hide spoiler)]

Interesting! Personally, I think it's Sanderson's choice, it's his story after all.. (view spoiler)[ I can kind of see what that Reddit person was saying about the fact that Kaladin's not killing someone in cold blood and it would have been his right to kill Szeth as he was murdering people left, right and centre.. but still, Szeth wanted to be killed, Kaladin could see he was tortured and I think Sanderson's right, it would have gone against what he stands for. Yeah, I agree with you Beena (view spoiler)[The man raises some valid points there, but I kinda like the revised version better (tbh I might be a bit biased because I read the revised version first), it feels more like something Kaladin would do. But, as you said, in the end it's Sanderson's story and he apparently felt very strong about it and he's the one who knows what his characters are supposed to be like so... (hide spoiler)]

My biggest problem is I listened to the audiobook, and it's the unedited version... so I'd have never known if I didn't look it up... I bet it creates some discrepencies, when people first join the fandom unawares...

I know right! Sometimes it can be a bit hit and miss cos it's not how I imagined the character (though I suppose that goes for everybody) but everything I've seen for these books so far has been amaze.

Yet to order Rhythm of War; the only thing with that is, it's a hardcover and I much prefer paperbacks but I'll guess I'll just have to suck it up.

Finished my Way of Kings reread just now and jumping into Words of Radiance (have it in paperback and audio) late and hoping to catch up before you all start Oathbringer in September. I suppose I have to squeeze in an Edgedancer reread too. A Warbreaker reread isn't going to happen, but I tend to find that(view spoiler)[ just knowing the two characters and a certain sword is enough. What those characters have done since Warbreaker, how the hell they got to Roshar, and what are they doing here have yet to be explained regardless. (hide spoiler)] Just saw the last time I started reading this was almost exactly 3 years ago to the date (August 28th 2017)
