Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Hi all!!
I´m Alla, just saw the message now that I made it into the challenge! Never played before so I´m brand new to this and might need some guidence from you all that are more experienced!! :)
Looking forward to playing and I love reading so finishing a book will not be difficult for me :)
So...I´m not 100% sure how this works and I might need some help in deciding what card to use (what I can read), what cards are left and so on... :D

If my understanding is right, does the list now mean that I choose one of the books that have been picked (since we have to dublicate 4 cards)?

Question for future choices: Does the dust jacket have to be 50% of a certain color or does the book itself (the front and back book covers in hardcover books) count as well? I ask as if you remove the dust jacket from this book the book itself is 100% red. I tend to read mostly hardcover editions so I'm curious. I am still going to read the book as I know you can use it somewhere :-)

Hi Alla! Welcome! I'm not a captain but have played before. My advice is to read what you want as this is just the first hand and virtually anything you read can be used somewhere. Have you looked at the spreadsheet? That gives you the entire month. Also, remember it's not simply book colors or titles that are used for UNO: so are author names, character names, location names, etc. Our captains will do the hard work of fitting the appropriate books to the needed cards. The idea is to read and read and read. So pick books you really want to read and enjoy!! It's actually really fun! Just my simple advice.

message 56: by maria helena (new)

maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments Excellent advice, Michele!

Like Michele said, pick the books you are excited to read! 3 months will feel like a very long challenge if you read books you are not crazy about.

As long your book works for at least one type of card, it is enough. We captains will make sure we use the books so that we maximise our points and we will also make sure that there isn't a card type that we don't have enough books for. We will let you know if there is something special that we are lacking.

The only cards that we want people to claim in advance are the coloured covers. They are usually the most difficult to fill, so we want to make sure we have those covered.

For the colour cards, it is minimum 50% of the front cover (=cover image here on goodreads) that has to be the specified colour.

If you cannot find the edition you are reading here, or the cover image isn't the same as your book for the same isbn, let us know and we will do our best to get that edition added to the GR database.

Yes, you can choose to read for one of the colour cards that someone else has already picked, because we need to duplicate 4 of those cards.

Note that duplicating that card doesn't mean that you have to read the same book, just that we e.g. need to read 2 books that both work for "1 Red".

Michele Abrams Lehn (mabramslehn) | 428 comments Ok, so it is book jacket cover we are looking at. Got it.

For the duplication, can only duplicate each card once.

I didn't realize there was going to be a 3rd. Agree about the 1st one, but it was interesting enough that I want to read the 2nd one. Since it works so perfectly for Red Cover, I might wait until we have Red come up again.

I realize that- just giving you options for filling card spaces.

message 93: by Cathy M. (last edited Feb 03, 2020 12:32PM) (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 505 comments We really only need 1 option per #/card, so if you have multiple options for each #, only list the more important ones. For instance, for characters, I would list whoever was a bigger character.

But the reason why I wrote that above was because you had listed:

6- S (Stair) Title

which is not a correct option. S for Stevie is fine though.

Might have been wise to chose something shorter to begin with, but I didn´t realise it was that long, but I really enjoyed it.

Now...I'm not fully into the cards yet, I don' t know what we have finished and what we have left.
If I'm understanding the cards right, I think I finished:

Green 3 - Both the main character and the location starts with H.
0 - Standalone
5-I (Isaac) character
6-S (Sheridan) author´s last name

I might be way off here, just let me know ;)

So now I need to figure out what cards we have left...can someone post that (if it hasn´t already been done and I can´t see it). :D

Great job Alla! I'm not a captain and am certain one of them will reply but I struggled with the cards my first year as well. It's still early in the month so typically the spreadsheets don't start getting filled in until later as the captains get more data for filling in the spreadsheet. We reader-bees don't need to worry about the number cards- just keep reading. Apparently all colored cards are accounted for so now it's just covering numbers which we do by reading, reading, reading. I recommend not worrying about much else. Happy to have you on the team!

Read what you feel like! Maybe a favourite author or a series you have been waiting to catch up on?

We captains will keep track and let everyone know if there is something special we are lacking. Until then, just keep reading :)
