10 (or so) years in the future, low scifi-elements, and if the plot gets stagnant, any investigation can be randomly interrupted for a more exciting one.

The character I normally use in this situation has a girlfriend (not married), so we can still somewhat pursue your idea.

There is quite a bit of reading to try to understand the setting I had in mind...
In place of the FBI, the Inter State Detective Agency (ISDA) has jurisdiction over all cases that cross state lines or concern domestic security that isn't under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court (situations with ambassadors, et cetera).
US involvement in the middle east has nearly ended, but oil-hungry Russia, China, and India have all turned their eyes to the deserts.
A growing religious-political movement (cult) is growing in power, albeit slowly. The Church of Reformation celebrates the enigmatic, mysterious "William."
ISDA training is as follows:
Written and multiple choice exam (similar to the ASVAB, ACT, SAT, or AP testing?) and a physical qualification course (minimum pushups, sit ups, pull ups, and ability to run 1 mile in under 10 minutes).
Candidates go to school in Quantico, Virginia (formerly the training ground and offices of the FBI) where they learn law and police procedures, pass firearm qualifications, take another test, and take another physical exam (with stricter requirements), then get assigned to a ISDA field office.
Normally in this scenario, the female is recently out of academy (or still relatively new) and was either newly assigned or transferred (for whatever reason you'd like) to the ISDA FoB in Newhaven, North Carolina, a quickly growing eastern port city with a steadily increasing crime late.
ow comfortable are you with Science Fiction? This particular setting is low-scifi, meaning it has nonreal elements but never unbelievable ones. There are no lasers, spaceships, or killer robots. There IS however a growing popularity, mostly among late-teen to young-adult (17-24), of "Body augmentation." Tattoos, while still prevalent, are not nearly as "Cool" as they once were; many people now get surgical implants of semi-functional modifications, like a tail or animal ears or canine incisors.
Ripley's "Believe It Or Not" theatres, as you can imagine, have gone out of business.
The ISDA has a zero tolerance policy on body augmentation the way most US police stations do now. For some agents, subdermal augmentations are permitted (the world of prosthetics and grafting has allowed humans to replace their organs with superior ones. The difference isn't inhuman, but it is considerable. There are also bone-strengthening injections that fill air pockets with alloys depending on how much you can pay, thyroid replacements, et cetera. A LOT of this stuff is only recently out of the experimentation stage, however, and the ISDA is hesitant to allow agents to use what could potentially catastrophically malfunction and result in their death and a failed investigation)

ISDA - NO MORE FBI
Tails/ears/glowing eyes/et cetera are newly popular, like tattoos. The ISDA has a zero tolerance policy on them.
The #1 firearms and military supply manufacturer in the US is Pride Industries, run by Jackson Pride
The USA is no longer fighting in the middle east. Now, oil-hungry Russia, China, and India are.
In place of Islamist extremists, the ultra-conservative "Newborn Christians" from the Church of Reformation is a quickly growing, violent group labeled a "Cult" by US law.
Your character will have to have attended the ISDA academy for two years. There are several mental and physical requirements; she has to be in good health and mental condition. It is your decision whether you want her to be fresh out of the academy or not; my own character has been an ISDA agent for several years.
Because this is my idea, I will gladly post first. Is this setting acceptable?

New Haven, North Carolina was like most big cities on the east coast; its economy was a healthy mixture of fishing and exportation, it had a blend of the urban elite and low-class, unskilled laborers, and it was hard to escape late-night neon advertisements. There were as many forms of entertainment available as could be paid for and traffic just slow enough to make it impossible to enjoy.
The city was still new to (your character's name?), as she had been transferred to the NH ISDA field office only recently, the newly assigned partner of Alan "Warhawk" Hawke, whose negative reputation for a short temper and often violent problem-solving skills was preceded only by an impressive record of successful cases. It was only fair that she was warned that he wasn't easy to work with, and that he had lost his last partner (one Agent Scott) to unfortunate circumstances while working Witness Protection.
She was to report the office two days after she arrived. It was the second day that she received a text message from her new coworker, asking to meet at the Blueboar Brewery, a bar a city block away from the field office and conveniently close to her apartment.

((is this good))

The Brewery reached its uncomfortable drone of Saturday-night shenanigans; a few happy drunks stumbled around, a cluster of young adults yelled threats at a TV, and the bartender guilley overcharged hapless party goers.
There was no obstacles in finding an empty seat. A waitress, on her way to another table, stopped to tell Kelly that all orders had to be made at the bar, before shuffling away. A few minutes passed; her text was returned: Running late. 5 mikes. The clock struck eight. A slender hand landed on the back of her seat, stopping the attached bombshell blonde from careening to the floor. "Sorry luv," she mumbled, moving to grab and adjacent seat. "This taken?"

The woman smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry; may have had one too many. How about you? Happy hour... is like twenty minutes... my name's Elizabeth, by the way."

Kelly looked at the women and said" It okay, im Kelly by the way" she looked at her phone. where is he she thought to herself. she then looked back up at the women.

"You waitin' for someone?" she drawled, obviously slightly inebriated. "Got a hot date lined up tonight?"
(I used to have a male character named Cecilia. It took me a year to convince everyone on my old site he wasn't a woman)

Kelly looked up and said" im waiting for someone but its not a date." she smiled up at the women.

Kelly smiled and looked at her phone and texts where are you

"Well? Looks like you got blown off. But I'm here and I don't have anywhere to be for a few hours."

Kelly smiled and said" okay, I wouldn't mind you being here, probably better than the person I was supposed to meet."

Elizabeth rocked back in her chair, laughing, as Alan finally made himself known. Dressed in a long coat against the cold night, he sat next to her, arms crossed. Despite the scrutinizing nonexpression he armed himself with, he could be described as handsome; he was in great shape, with a strong jaw and short hair.

"From where I was standing, she offered oral and you didn't say no," he replied bluntly. "You are..." he checked his phone, "one Ms. Kelly (lastname), correct? New agent at the New Haven field office?"

Elizabeth pecked him on the cheek, winked at Kelly, then left.
"Describe your experience at the Quantico ISDA academy," he told her without preamble.
(Remember: 2 years minimum, physical and mental requirements)
