(one thing she's undoubtedly heard over and over at ISDA Academy is that killing someone is the absolute last resort at all times)

(Timelapse?)
That Monday, Alan was waiting by the front door of the 5-floor building. Hr wore a long, black coat against the cold morning air. On his belt was his badge, shining proudly, and his sidearm, a large Kimberley Night Warrior in 10mm auto. It was old (10+ years) but not outdated. He pushed himself.from the wall he was leaning against as she came up the walkway. "Good morning. You need to meet Director Richson, then I'll introduce you to the other agents, then we'll go to the range. Unfortunately we're cold until you get cleared for field duty. And good morning."

Alan stopped. "Goodmorning, everyone."
A general response greeted them.
"This is the greenback, Ms. Kelly (lastname?). Kelly, this is the A-Team."

(Hawke being Alan's last name. Also, I'd appreciate if you tried to match my volume. Am I not giving you enough detail to respond to, or have you lost interest because Alan was a jerk at the bar?)

Kelly watched a man step out and she said" Hello Director Dylano, yes I remember you" she shook his hand. She nodded and said" okay, thanks sir" She looked at everyone and then looked at Alan. She said" sir do you know when I will be getting the packet?" she looked at him because as Detective Hawke had said not to look down because it made her appear weak.

Dylano nodded. "You'll see that I run a tight ship, Ms. Sullivan. You should get cleared for duty within a few days. In the mean time, I'm sure HR has plenty of t's to cross and i's to dot." He turned and walked back to his office.
"Unfortunately, HR is always in a good mood," Alan said as he headed back in their department's direction. "It's their job, I guess."
HR's department was very large, about 400 square feet. Six desks were manned by four men and two women; a box of donuts with a "Feel free to take one, have a great day" sign and a smiley face adjacent was by the door. "Goodmorning Agent Hawke," an older, motherly woman closest to the door greeted. "Goodmorning, Meredith. This is-"
"Ms. Sullivan, I know." She got up from her desk and approached them. "How are you settling in? Has Alan finished his asshole routine yet?"

Meredith mentioned the donuts before returning to her desk. "Turn that back in by the end of the day. If you have any problems, that's what HR is here for. Have a great day, both of you."
Alan touched her arm. "C'mon, you can fill that out later. I want to know how well you can shoot."

(HP meaning hollow point, designed to be effective against people but not go through walls to minimize the risk of hurting innocents standing behind them. Several police shoot-outs have ended fatally because HP is useless against bullet proof vests)

The basement, as could be expected, was cold. The walls were all concrete. A massive, sliding metal wall divided where they were from the parking lot. Several sections were fenced in and guarded. They came to a wooden box manned by an older latino who buzzed them through an electromagnetic door. "Hasus, I need to sign out an SI in forty and two boxes." Alan pulled some paperwork from his coat. Hasus looked it over, stamped it, and called over his shoulder for another man, who came out with a small, locked case, key, and two boxes of .40S&W ammunition. Alan took the case and the key, letting her handle the ammo. "The range is just down there." He pointed at a series of concrete stalls in a plastic bubble.

(Some clarification may be necessary here:
.22 is a very small bullet, little recoil. Cheap and good for practice. Strong enough to kill a rat.
9mm is currently a very popular self-defence round. It is also cheap and it's loud enough to scare people out of your backyard. As far as I know, most police stations in the US have their officers carrying Glocks in 9mm.
10mm is a relatively new, large, expensive ((because it isn't popular)), high-recoil round that will put the fear of God in any would-be attacker. There are a lot of issues with using it in pistols. Because it is so large, it is hard to fit many in one magazine, and it is difficult for female shooters to use due to-on average-smaller hands. It isn't impossible, but I can't say I know any women that like 10mm. Unlike 9mm, it can more reliably penetrate windshields and walls. Modern SWAT units use MP5/10s, which are MP5s rechambered-changed to use-10mm instead of 9mm
.40 Smith and Wesson is a 10mm basically cut in half. It is easier to fit more than 10 in one magazine and it finds a comfortable middle ground between killing power and functionality. After that fatal shooting in Miami where several FBI agents were killed by gunmen in body armor, the FBI decided to make .40S&W the standard ammunition for their agents. Because the ISDA in this story is like the FBI all grown up, they've kept .40 as the standard.
Alan carries a pistol in 10mm for several reasons. 1, because he-like many people-say that the "S&W" in the name means "Short and Weak" not "Smith and Wesson." 2, he doesn't trust .40 to stop someone fast enough. He gets away with it because of his reputation with the Agency, and because he has the strength and firearm experience necessary to use it safely.
That is all information that Kelly should have learned by graduation. If you need me to clarify more, I'd be happy to. The above is mostly what I've taken off of Wikipedia and heard from crazy family members, so take it with a grain of salt.
It is entirely your decision how proficient you want Kelly to be. She could take Alan's 10mm and get a 1-inch grouping at 10 yards or it might break her wrist. It's your character; I can't make that decision for you.
And to clarify again: a x-inch grouping is referring to how far apart the bullet holes are in a target. A 1-inch grouping means every hole is within 1 inch of the others, which is incredible at 30 feet
Also: Glocks are popular because they're very cheap and they have a reputation for reliability. I personally like the way they look but I don't like them. They have a lot of problems like their rolling-slide action. If you push the barrel against a flat wall then pull away, the weapon will discharge. A lot of accidental shootings have happened that way. Kelly can have whatever pistol you think looks cool or has a cool name. Since this story is in a slightly alternate future, we can even make something up if you would like.)

The ear muffs worked as described, muffling sound before the shot hurt her ears. Alan nodded, waited for the muffler to soften, then told her to use the rest without stopping. "Feet flat, firm grip, breathe slowly, shoulder height, lean forward, stay focused."
