Jonas K-m | 3 comments The Hobbit, by World War I veteran J.R.R. Tolkien, is the first book in the series that will focus mainly on small creatures called hobbits. Hobbits are essentially dwarves, but smaller. They generally don't go on adventures, but rather, they stay at home and really seem to care too much about the rest of the world. In The Hobbit, we see Bilbo Baggins sent on an adventure with twelve dwarves and a wizard. He did not want to go, but Gandalf the wizard made him do it. Through his unwanted adventure, Bilbo turns from a timid hobbit to become a brave burglar.

At the beginning of the story, Bilbo was just looking at the sky thinking what a beautiful day it is. Gandalf arrived and asked if Bilbo would like to go on an adventure. Bilbo said he is not interested, and then he told Gandalf to go away. Later that night he was minding his own business and eating some cheese, when two unfamiliar dwarves suddenly barged in and shoved their weapons into Bilbo's hands. Dwarves kept coming in until there were twelve of them. Gandalf arrived and told Bilbo that he will go on a quest with the dwarves. Bilbo did not want to go, but he did anyways. The rest of the book describes how he travels across Middle Earth and encounters trolls, goblins, giant wolves, a half-man/half-bear, giant spiders, angry elves, and a giant fire-breathing dragon. Through it all, Bilbo learns how to be courageous and strong.

I liked the fight scenes in the book in particular. Bilbo and the dwarves had some imaginative ways to solve their problems. In this way the book reminded me of the Dragonbreath series by Ursula Vernon. Like Danny Dragonbreath, Bilbo is not very strong, but he still can sneak around and can trick his enemies rather than fighting them. Like the Indiana Jones movies, there is also a lot of exploring interesting places.

There were some things about the characters that I did not like. For example, the Elf King is arrogant and a snob. Gollum, a hermit creature that lives in the Misty Mountains, acts like an addict because of a magic ring. Even Bilbo's friends the dwarves are greedy. However, these things do not make the story less interesting, they help create the action situations.

I would recommend this book to anyone who liked the Star Wars films because they both are about two normal people who get thrust into an adventure. There are also a lot of diverse creatures in both. People who like the Percy Jackson series will also like this book for the same reasons. Someone who are not interested in adventure stories might not like this book. Personally, I give it a 4 1/2 golden banana rating.
