I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked before. I keep running across "rebus" editions of classics, like these editions of Black Beauty for example:

My question is: should these editions be treated as adaptations or as regular editions of the classic? I've been leaving these editions alone, but I keep running across so many that it's starting to drive me crazy.
What do you think?
