We're going to use it for the story. Books can only be used for one part of the mini, not both. So we'll use it for the story!

Jennifer J. | 561 comments I would say yes

Chris | 190 comments Yes. Definitely.

Laura | 2892 comments Status update for us as we head into the weekend:

8 of 15 hands completed (we only need 23 more books to complete all!)

7 of 9 color cards completed (we just need Eli's Green 8 & Melissa's Red 9)

Mini-challenge:

Story written; 6 of 15 books finished for it
10 of 25 tasks completed
We've got 4 spots still open:

12. Read a book with a character who takes a risk.
17. Read a book with stars on the cover.
20. Read a book with a character who builds something.
23. Read a book where someone prepares (lots of) food.

We've been switching places back and forth with other teams between 2nd & 5th position. It's that close!

message 306: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments The Lady of the Rivers will only cover someone who takes a risk, just to let you know. I should be done on either Monday or Tuesday.

message 307: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments The Lady of the Rivers is in the story!

message 308: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Oh! I thought they could be separate. OK. No problem.

message 309: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chris wrote: "Oh! I thought they could be separate. OK. No problem."

We can use a book for both the mini-challenge and the regular hands, but within the mini, they can be used for one or the other of the 2 parts, but not both.

message 310: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments OK. First time I’ve been told that.

message 311: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I’ll be finished The Lady of the Rivers later today. Is there any colours, numbers or challenges you need me to find a book for?

message 312: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments We have 2 slots left in the mini. Someone builds something, and someone prepares (lots of) food.

The color cards are covered. Eli & Melissa are reading for the last 2.

message 313: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments OK. I'll read Me Talk Pretty One Day. He complains about restaurants who make towers of food. Plus, its only 272 pages , so I should have it done before the end of the month.

message 314: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Sorry. Finished The Lady of the Rivers as well!

message 315: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chris wrote: "OK. I'll read Me Talk Pretty One Day. He complains about restaurants who make towers of food. Plus, its only 272 pages , so I should have it done before the end of the month."

Is there an actual character who makes the food? Nonfiction books are tough. I know that for regular Uno cards we can't count people mentioned in nonfiction books as characters.

message 316: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I’m not sure. Does it have to be a character? You said ‘someone’.

message 317: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I’m sorry. That’s my fiction bias showing. Yes, it needs to be a character.

message 318: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Ah! I’m on page 40 now. Sorry.

message 319: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments I don’t have anything to cover those two options anyway unfortunately. I do have to say this challenger is very biased against biographies and autobiographies. It seems to only cover fiction which seems a bit unfair to me. Oh well.

Laura | 2892 comments Chris wrote: "I don’t have anything to cover those two options anyway unfortunately. I do have to say this challenger is very biased against biographies and autobiographies. It seems to only cover fiction which ..."

I'm sorry. I know that ruling was made because it can be difficult to quantify what is/isn't a character in a non-fiction book. Here's the official ruling from the FAQs thread:

What's the rules with non fiction Books? Can the real life people of history say be used as "characters" and the same with locations used as "settings"?
I'm going to say no for the majority of non fiction books, (it opens the doors to books that have a zillion royals listed for example), unless of course the non fiction book is something like "Eat Pray Love" which is told like a novel with limited characters. I hope that makes sense!!

message 321: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I needed a book with "And" in the title for another challenge, so I'm reading an audio that has a woman working as a housekeeper/personal chef for a football player with a "plant-based lifestyle" (not vegan!). So she cooks a LOT of food to cover his 10,000 calories a day during training.

Now we just need one where a character builds something (or a blanket on the cover, because my blanket one works for the build something).

message 322: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments Didn’t your book qualify for the blanket?

message 323: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chris wrote: "Didn’t your book qualify for the blanket?"

It did. But it also has people building things (restoring a castle), so if someone can't find a book with people building things, but can find a blanket, they can be swapped.

message 324: by Chris (new)

Chris | 190 comments OK

message 325: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments The book I just finished would work for builds something... he magically builds a wall several times... you could swap that it if you can find one to replace it.

Laura | 2892 comments Tatiana wrote: "The book I just finished would work for builds something... he magically builds a wall several times... you could swap that it if you can find one to replace it."

Looking now. We have several options that haven't fit in the mini challenge yet.

Laura | 2892 comments We've got 5 days left in the month, team! I just wanted to give us a quick update and make sure everyone is on track to finish their books for the mini-challenge. The Shadow Soul - Jennifer (marked currently reading) Completed
Sabriel - Chelsey - (marked currently reading)

Chris | 190 comments I’ll be finished my book, Me Talk Pretty One Day, before the end of the month but what happens if all hands are finished and it doesn’t fit the mini?

message 329: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Chris wrote: "I’ll be finished my book, Me Talk Pretty One Day, before the end of the month but what happens if all hands are finished and it doesn’t fit the mini?"

Then we just can't use it anywhere. I had about 5 books last month that weren't used anywhere.

message 330: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 338 comments I should finish my two by either tomorrow or Saturday.

message 331: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey Keathley-Jones (keathleyc) | 172 comments Assassin's Apprentice, I only have a couple of hours left in the audiobook. I will knock it out tonight. I am also almost done with Things You Save in a Fire. I should finish all four of mine by the end of the month!

message 332: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments I will have Shadow Soul done tomorrow at the latest and would have time to get another one read if we need something filled. SO is back on his hitch so I get more reading done when he is gone.

message 333: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments I will be finished with mine 👍🏻

message 334: by Laura (last edited Mar 30, 2020 03:54PM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Hey Team!

Our April hands have been posted! We have 16 hands this month, with 14 color cards! Additionally, we have 2 Wild Draw 4 cards, although one of them is in a hand with a color card and a Draw 2. The Blue 1 & Blue 6 are in a hand together with a Draw 2, so if we can find a blue cover that fits 1 & 6, that's one less to worry about. Same with the Blue 2 & Blue 9. Same hand, Draw 2. So, we have up to 15 color cards to cover!

Red 4 - Jackie
Blue 9 - Laura
Yellow 2 - Jennifer
Green 9 - Jackie
Yellow 8 - Tatiana (can work for 3 or 4)
Yellow 3 - Melissa (can work for 2)
Blue 4 - Eli
Yellow 4 - Chelsey (can work for 2, 3 or 8)
Red 5 - Jackie
Blue 1 - Jennifer
Blue 6 - Jennifer
Red 1 - Laura
Blue 2 - Jennifer
Blue 9 - Jennifer
Wild Draw 4 (duplicate any of the above cards, except Yellow 2). - Savir, Blue 6

I assume a lot of you are in the same position I'm in. My local libraries are closed, so I'll need to get creative to find books, but I believe we can do it! :)

I'll ask.

message 337: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana Davis | 66 comments I just started reading a Emma. My version has a yellow cover and will work with either yellow 3,4 or 8.

message 338: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments I have The Better Sister by Alafair Burke which would work for the Blue 2 (CH LN Taylor) & 9 (CH FN Nicky)

Laura | 2892 comments I can take the Red 4. Red enough? Sixth Sense (Lovin' the Coven #6) by Jacquelyn Faye Phoenixflare (The Rogue Witch, #6) by K.T. Strange

message 340: by Jennifer (last edited Mar 28, 2020 12:13PM) (new)

Jennifer J. | 561 comments You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks would definitely work for Blue 6 (CH FN Shay) but I won't know about 1 until I listen to it.

If they both work, I can do the Wild Draw 4 as well.

message 344: by Laura (last edited Mar 28, 2020 02:27PM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments I have Lover Unleashed (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #9) by J.R. Ward that I'm going to try to get a copy of. It works for any of our blue cards.

ETA: I got it! So I can do the Blue 9

message 345: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Jennifer wrote: "I found a Blue 1 & 6 if this is blue enough Lying Next to Me by Gregg Olsen"

I'm not sure that one quite hits 50%, so I'll ask.

message 346: by Savir (new)

Savir Husain Khan (savir) | 4 comments I'll be finishinghttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
this book by the first week of April.
can we use this for April?

message 347: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Books I've checked with captain's group on:

Up Country by Nelson DeMille - No
Phoenixflare (The Rogue Witch, #6) by K.T. Strange - No
A Tail of Woah (The Fox and the Hounds #1) by Jacquelyn Faye - Yes
Lying Next to Me by Gregg Olsen - Yes
Sixth Sense (Lovin' the Coven #6) by Jacquelyn Faye - pending

It looks like one of the authors' has an S initial, so it works for a Blue 6. Since we're using that with the Blue 1 for the Draw 2, we can use yours for Wild Draw 4 card that we need to fill.

Just remember, don't finish before April 1!

message 349: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments If you have a book you're dying to read that fits for anything I've got my name next to, just speak up. My reading for the month is not set in stone!

message 350: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) I’ll try to find some red of yellow books, but the library’s are closed here as well. Have Blue 4/6/9 that I can start on?
