I failed my people! I was so busy this past week and weekend (we had a belated Thanksgiving at my house) that I forgot to hold a readathon this past 3-day weekend (for the US)! :(

So we are going to have a readathon this coming weekend, Friday, Jan 24 - Sunday, Jan 26! And also because I don't know about you but I could use a good weekend readathon!

Anyone need a kickstart to your 2020 reading? Now's your chance! What are your goals?

message 2: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I have a wedding to go to on Saturday that my little guy is the ring bearer in. Thankfully it's local, but I still don't know how much reading I'll have time for. I'll check in on Friday with some (itty bitty) goals.

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I did manage to get a lot of reading done over the weekend but I don't mind doing MORE reading this weekend! 😁 I still have a stack of library books here I need to read and get caught up on! Plus I'm doing the Popsugar challenge so need to read books for that too! But yeah...library books.. most of them are 300+ pages too.

message 4: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2182 comments I don’t know if I’ll be able to do much extra reading. My reading goals for the rest of January are to finish my reread of Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones and then read Persuasion by Jane Austen in preparation for a retelling coming out in February.

message 5: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2182 comments I got Small Spaces (Small Spaces, #1) by Katherine Arden from the library, so I might read it specially for this readathon.

I had 4 library books come in all at once [one had been 5 weeks out when I had checked on it the day before it came in for me - AHHHHHHHH] and I am buried in The Historian, so I feel your pain!!

message 8: by Dawn Michelle (last edited Jan 21, 2020 06:09PM) (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3492 comments I need to finish The Historian before the end of the month, but I can only do about 2 hours of it at a time [it is SO good, but SO dense] so hopefully I can get a full 2 hours in on both Friday and Sunday [we have book club on Saturday].

And then I got 4 library/overdrive books all at once so I am trying to get through those as well. I have one NetGalley book left Parable of the Sower, but since its a graphic novel, I think I can wait until closer to the pub date.

AND I am reading The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone, but it is just SO much [and so thought-provoking], that I can only do a chapter of that a time. So it will probably be The Historian and the library books [see below].

Shot Through the Hearth
The Beautiful Mystery
Mission to Murder
Where the Crawdads Sing <--Audiobook

Ok so I'm trying to get a handle on my NetGalley books and I'm doing pretty well so far. I'm trying to read at least one a week that isn't past due. I'd like to finish what I'm currently reading, which will probably take me to Friday and then read at lease one complete ARC novel and some graphic novels this weekend.

CURRENTLY READING - TO FINISH
Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace (Felicity Carrol Mystery #2) by Patricia Marcantonio The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte

TO READ
The Other People by C.J. Tudor NG ARC publishes 1/28
Manga Classics The Jungle Book by Crystal S. Chan Manga Classics Great Expectations by Stacy King Manga Classics The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe by Stacy King NG Overdue ARCs (just need to clear these out once and for all!)
Paper Girls, Vol. 2 by Brian K. Vaughan Paper Girls, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan High Fantasies (Rat Queens, #4) by Kurtis J. Wiebe The Colossal Magic Nothing (Rat Queens, #5) by Kurtis J. Wiebe The Infernal Path (Rat Queens #6) by Kurtis J. Wiebe

I've barely made any progress in my current reads so I've got my work cut out for me this weekend! I'm only 15% into Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace (Felicity Carrol Mystery #2) by Patricia Marcantonio and 15 pages into The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte . I'm also listening to The Spaceship Next Door (Sorrow Falls, #1) by Gene Doucette which I need to finish by tomorrow night. I'm halfway through it. It's weird. lol. But I do have work to bring home this weekend so that gives me more audio time.

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I had a bit of a surprise yesterday when I went to the library. I thought I could renew Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs but found out I can't as the book seems very popular right now so it's due today. I just started it yesterday evening and I'm 42 percent through it. Hope I can finish it this morning and drop it off at the nearby library. One of my groups is reading this one, maybe why it's so popular.

I'm also reading Dragons of the Hourglass Mage (Dragonlance The Lost Chronicles, #3) by Margaret Weis but I mainly read it yesterday while on the bus and waiting for an appointment so didn't really get that far. Only on page 42 of 336. So I'll be starting the readathon with these 2 books. This one fits a Popsugar challenge.

message 13: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2182 comments Didn’t get as far into Howl’s Moving Castle as I was hoping yesterday, and I’ve got work and a few other things I need to attend to this weekend. I plan to finish HMC tomorrow, and then my hold on The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith came in. It’s pretty short so I want to finish that over the weekend. We’ll see how much more I can do.

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I have finished Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs

message 15: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2182 comments Managed to read The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith in its entirety today, and I intend to finish Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones tomorrow, so I might actually have time for one more short one this weekend.

message 16: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I won't be able to participate as much as I had expected to due to a 'surprise' house guest (the other people in the house knew they were coming this weekend but I was still working on outdated plans until just before they arrived- oops!), but I did get 3 chapters of In the Name of Rome The Men Who Won the Roman Empire by Adrian Goldsworthy and about 20 pages of The Secret Commonwealth (The Book of Dust, #2) by Philip Pullman read.

My DVR was 100% so I watched TV last night. lol. I also read Paper Girls, Vol. 2 by Brian K. Vaughan . I read 15% more of Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace (Felicity Carrol Mystery #2) by Patricia Marcantonio . I put The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte aside because it's an ARC that doesn't publish till March 3 whereas I want to read The Other People by C.J. Tudor that's an ARC that publishes this Tuesday. I finished listening to The Spaceship Next Door (Sorrow Falls, #1) by Gene Doucette , didn't really like it.

Sarah B | 391 comments What a morning I'm having! Found out my ceiling is leaking! I put a container under it to catch the drip and I returned a due book to the library. They had a book sale for $0.20 per paperback so I got 15 of those. Then outside in a free Library I found a book published in Jan 2020 - just what I need for the Popsugar challenge!! I couldn't believe my luck! So now I'm hoping I can relax and read my DragonLance book, Dragons of the Hourglass Mage. Hope to finish it today.

Oh good and bad things! Kind of like my day! My husband and I had a nice lazy morning, then ran some errands, played Pokemon Go together (it's a raid weekend), caught the raid bosses, then my car battery died and we had to wait an hour to get a jumpstart. So good and bad things! lol.

message 21: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Yes, good and bad. I've been spending a relaxing afternoon with Raistlin on Krynn. 🐲 I think I definitely will finish it tonight. I have about 115 more pages to go.

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I finished two books today!

Dragons of the Hourglass Mage (Dragonlance The Lost Chronicles, #3) by Margaret Weis

I Survived The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 (I Survived Graphic Novel #1) A Graphix Book by Georgia Ball

The second one is an ARC which was a fast read. Great story too!

I read Paper Girls, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan High Fantasies (Rat Queens, #4) by Kurtis J. Wiebe
About 50% through Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace (Felicity Carrol Mystery #2) by Patricia Marcantonio
Brought work home and doing that now so I started listening to The Vanishing Season (Ellery Hathaway, #1) by Joanna Schaffhausen

Got down to 80% full in the DVR so not planning on turning on the TV today. After finishing work I will just be reading!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I have just finished Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi and will start on Venom & Vanilla (The Venom Trilogy, #1) by Shannon Mayer

The first book also fits into my Popsugar challenge.

Shelby Suderman | 2182 comments Managed to finish Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones today. I’ve done some rearranging of my tbr and my main read for February is Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies , which I may or may not start tonight.

Didn't do as well as I wanted to this weekend but I did read and got some books off my stacks.
Finished
The Spaceship Next Door (Sorrow Falls, #1) by Gene Doucette (audio)

Read
Paper Girls, Vol. 2 by Brian K. Vaughan Paper Girls, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan High Fantasies (Rat Queens, #4) by Kurtis J. Wiebe The Vanishing Season (Ellery Hathaway, #1) by Joanna Schaffhausen (audio)

Still reading
Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace (Felicity Carrol Mystery #2) by Patricia Marcantonio 50% through

message 29: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I forgot to come back and check in, but I ended up finishing both of the books I had in progress going into the weekend, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life and Elven Star. I also picked up The Fever, read 63 pages (about a quarter into it) and decided to DNF. So, not a great way to end my weekend, but it still gets another book off my TBR.

message 30: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I didn't get much done during the weekend- about a total of 4 hours and finished up In the Name of Rome The Men Who Won the Roman Empire by Adrian Goldsworthy . There was a bit more reading, but it was with the 2 year old and the same 5 board books over and over (I was the Chosen One this weekend. Usually it's all about Grandma, but this weekend it was all about Auntie! :D There's nothing quite like a tiny human with surveying all of their favorite people and then running up to you with her favorite book declaring "Read me, Stacie!")

I failed on this one guys! MLK weekend I was away at a scrapbook retreat from Thursday afternoon to Sunday. Then the weekend of the readathon I was catching up at home and doing work from home for my FT job. I did listen to some audio books but I can't even remember what at this point. I think it was Rich People Problems which was a surprisingly good ending to the series. I'm so sorry. I will do better next time!
