Amanda (magickrhythm) How does it work when I have killed a series in the early part of the year and then the author releases a new book in the series in the later part of the year?

For example, I finished The Burning Room (marked the series killed and got my 100 points). It was announced that he will release The Crossing (Bosch #20 and Haller #6) in November.

(1) Will I still get the 5 points for finishing the book?
(2) Will I get 100 points for killing the Mickey Haller series (I read that sub-series and books that cross multiple series count, correct me if I am wrong)?

I understand if I don't get the 100 points for killing off Harry Bosch again.

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments We only consider published books. So, you killed the series based on the books that were currently published. You completed your level and were awarded the badge.

In November, when the next book in the series is published, you may count the sub-series as killed - 60 pts + 5 for the last book. = 65.

If there was no sub-series involved it would be pretty straight forward - only 5 points for the newly completed book. But the sub-series complicates it a bit. You've previously read books 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 so no points for those books and no series counted since you read them before the challenge started. But in November, you'll be able to count that series when you read book 6.

Thank you! I knew that I would not get the points for killing Harry Bosch again, I was just not sure about the Mickey Haller part of it.

:) :)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Cathie, glad you have time for some reading in your life now! Everyone should have that in my opinion. A basic generic human right - some time to read!!

message 705: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Pickstone | 529 comments I wish to report my first 30 points, as entered on my thread! :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments Deborah wrote: "I wish to report my first 30 points, as entered on my thread! :)"

You do all your reporting in your thread except when you've completed a level. When you've completed a level (which is at least one series killed and a total of at least 100 points), then you request a badge in the "I've completed a level - Badge me" thread. Pop back to your thread and I'll show you how to track your points.

I absolutely agree with you TJ! This last year and a half has been hard and one of the worst things about it was having to give up reading for awhile. I'm so glad to be able to return to reading, although I have nowhere near the time to read like i use to.

So good to be back here!

message 710: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (magickrhythm) Hello!

Quick question: What happens if I read two series concurrently?

My husband and I started A Song of Fire & Ice (Game of Thrones) on Saturday and want to use this for the challenge. But I will only listen to this book when he and I are together.

I want to continue the challenge with books when he is not with me.

If I start and finish a series before I finish GoT series, will the books count? I hope I explained that okay.

message 711: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jun 29, 2015 07:30AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments Yes, you may read series concurrently.

You are just starting level 4, right? So whatever series books started and finished within the level count 5 "book" points. Only the completed series counts the "series" points. Say you only read book 1 of Song of Ice and Fire this level. You count 5 book points. Then next level, you finish the series - you count 50 series points and 4 x 5 (20) book points.

message 712: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19213 comments Just a warning though, as someone trying to listen to a series with some one else.

Like if you were just reading it yourself, if you start the book in level 4, but then complete the level with books you are reading yourself, you can't count the GoT for level 5 if you started it in level 4.

So if it turns out you have one book left to complete your level, and you haven't completed your audio book together yet, then I think you should just stay home together until you finish it. You know. So you don't waste anything.

Right - which is what "So whatever series books started and finished within the level count 5 "book" points."implies. LOL!

Amanda (magickrhythm) I think now I am even more confused. :(

message 715: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jun 30, 2015 06:56PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments I'm a bit confused now, Amanda. I looked at your thread and you are doing everything correctly. So I'm not sure I've understood your question.

You can read several series concurrently. You do not need to start and finish a series in a level. They can be spread out over several levels if you chose. You will count the book points only in the level in which they are read.

Here's my Level Four. Note how I have three "orphan books". During that level I read books from 5 different series, and read some of them concurrently. I may have had an audiobook going for the one series and an ebook on the go for another series.

Try not to overthink the challenge. Ask yourself, "Is this a series book belonging to at least a trilogy?" If yes, count the 5 points. Easy peasy.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19213 comments sorry. missed that.
nothing to see here people. carry on.

I think I need to stop trying to rise goodreads on my phone and just accept I can only really get on here for 5 mins a day at the moment

message 717: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments I gave up on the app a long time ago. It's like expecting a mountain bike to perform like a Cadillac.

message 720: by Theweebarrell (new)

Theweebarrell Hi can I join the challenge and how do I go about it thanks

message 721: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments You certainly may join the challenge. How do go about it? Pop back to the beginning of this thread. Instructions are there about setting up your own reporting thread and how to do the challenge. I think if you read through the first 3 or 4 pages of the thread, you'll get most of the clarifications. That will be a challenge in itself, but there's lots of useful into there.

message 722: by Theweebarrell (new)

Theweebarrell Thank you Janice. Will do

message 723: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm reading Blackberry Wine for this months food challenge. It is part of Joanne Harris's Food Trilogy which also includes Chocolat and Five Quarters of the Orange. It's not listed on Goodreads as a series so I'm guessing that I can't include it in the challenge but just wanted to ask. On her website, she talks about the book as being her 2nd book in the "food trilogy".

message 724: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments I think we'd decided Goodread's listing would be the deciding factor.

The books aren't even remotely connected like most series are. The only thing that is common is that they focus on food.

message 725: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments As I thought Janice.

I made a unilateral decision Janice, that, as I can't use ereader the last of a 7 book series is inaccessible to me. So am done with that series until they publish in hardback/paperback.

It does say that the expected publication is September 2015, and it doesn't show any ebook edition, so you are within the rules of the challenge.

Can you report this in the report/request badge thread along with the level you earned so that I can give you a badge? Thanks

message 729: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm afraid to go and update my series books read. There are a bunch of books but no series slayed. I'm going to end up with a lot of points for my current level. Oh well, I'm having a great time reading!

message 730: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I know what you mean Jmom. My current level is full of series books read and I just finished another but have yet to touch the two books that I had chosen to kill off a series. Now I am rethinking it as well. I think I have only one other choice without going over the top with points. Next level, the books for the series kill will have to come first. Library books make it hard to work around though. I guess I have to hold off reserving titles for a while.

Good luck with yours!

message 731: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm already at 165 points, so I know I'll be over 200. The crazy part is I'm going through series that I didn't even start until this challenge started. My poor existing ones are being ignored :)

message 732: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Burger (tammyburger) | 809 comments Could you add me to the serial killer challenge. I know it's late in the year (ugh, can't believe I'm saying that), but I have a few in my TBR list I want to get done.
Tammy's Taking Them Out!

message 733: by jaxnsmom (new)

Go to the Challenges: Year Long folder. At the right, above Last Activity, is the link for creating a new topic. Click on that and create your own thread for recording your serials to be read and your potential levels to reserve.

See message 1 in this thread for all of the details. You can also view other members' threads to get an idea of how people are setting theirs up.

Everyone has a little bit of a different style, just be sure to clearly show each of your levels and the points that you accumulate for each level.

Here are a few of examples:
Janice's Serial Slasher
Cherie's "It's dead, Jim." Series
Almeta, The Story Never Ends, Serialously

message 744: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19200 comments I'm sure this question has been asked already (probably 100 times, so sorry in advance!), but do all books in a series count or just the series that you're killing off? For example, I just read Murder on the Orient Express, which is book #10 in the Hercule Poirot series. I have not read any other books in that series. Do I still get the 5 points?

Yep! As long as it is part of a trilogy or higher numbered series.

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments I'm currently reading the fifth book in the Darwin Awards series and have a dilemma, the series link numbers books 1-5 but there is what is often considered to be a sixth book, The Darwin Awards Countdown to Extinction, so do I count this as a five or six series?

message 748: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I am officially working on level five! I need a good series on audio to start. Any recommendations? Something light. The audiobook I'm finishing up today is pretty dark and, frankly, disturbing. I need a happy or lighthearted read after this one and really would like a series.

Sam, I believe the challenge rule says to use whatever the Goodreads series listing is, so if GR only counts books 1-5 then 50 points for the series it is.

Magic 2.0 by Scott Meyer is a trilogy narrated by Luke Daniels (of the Iron Druid fame). The first book is Off to Be the Wizard.

Well, then there is The Iron Druid Chronicals by Keven Hearne the first is Hounded

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott (6 books) the first is The Alchemyst - I loved, loved them!
