It doesn't matter if you don't end up getting them all. The purpose is just to get us out of our comfort zones and read a wider spread of books.
I've always been very guilty of neglecting a lot of older books and classics because there were so many newer books I kept wanting to read. Creating this group has forced me to finally make an effort to get to those older books and although I'll never get to them all I'm having a lot of fun trying!

Great, I can't wait to see what books everyone starts to fit into their list!

message 10: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 140 comments I think this is a great challenge Michelle. I will have to look at it more closely after Christmas though as right now with work being so busy, I just don't have the head space to think about it. I've pretty much opted out of all my other challenges too for the time being. Look forward to getting stuck into it again soon. Thanks for another interesting challenge, though.

No worries Elaine. Reading is supposed to be fun and not something to stress over. It will certainly be lovely to have you join in though when you can :-)

Woohoo! It's time to start our annual challenge now!

I'm just a little bit excited if no-one can tell.

Has everyone thought about their list yet?

message 13: by Kate S (new)

Kate S I have thought about my list a bit and this is what I have planned:

1.The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
2. The Great Train Robbery
3. Red Harvest
4. Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
5. Oil!
6. High Fidelity
7. The Quiet American
8. Ripley Under Ground
9. NOT SURE YET*
10. Of Human Bondage
11. The God of Small Things (Man Booker 1997)
12. Paths of Glory

This is my first list, several of these books are slated for other challenges in the first couple of months of 2015, others are books I have had on my TBR for too long and this will hopefully encourage me to slot them into challenges later this year.

*I do not have a good grasp on new releases, yet. I will find books published in 2015 to read, but I probably won't make any decisions about which ones until March.

Awesome list Kate. I'll be interested to see what you think of High Fidelity as I've had that on my tbr for ages but haven't had the chance to get to it yet.

I haven't worked out what my 2015 new release will be yet either. I'm waiting to see what comes out and takes my interest.

Yay Elaine! You've got some really good ones on there too.
I'm trying to work myself up to reading Atlas Shrugged one day as I've heard it's not for everyone but I've had it on my kindle for a very long time.
I'll be interested to know what you think of The Great Gatsby too as I am one of the few people that didn't seem to really like it :-)

message 17: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 140 comments Michelle I've been meaning to read Gatsby for such a long time, hopefully with this challenge I'll finally get to it. Not sure about Atlas Shrugged. I have heard mixed reviews but my husband read it and liked it and mostly we have similar tastes, although his reading can be a bit more out there than mine. We'll see. :)

How's everyone going with their yearly challenge so far? I've managed to only tick 3 off my list but that's better than none and one was The Stand which is almost equivalent to 3 books in itself!

message 19: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 140 comments OMG, Michelle!!!! I haven't checked in here for ages. I haven't really been on GR all that much and haven't done any challenges for a while. I did agree to do the Winter challenge for AR but I've just looked at this list and realised I haven't read anything on my list!!!

message 20: by Becky (new)

Becky Slightly off topic - are we doing a June challenge? Or waiting till a maybe July?

message 21: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) I've knocked out four from my list. It's been a rather slow progress year and this time of the year I'm bogged down with work.

How's everyone going with this challenge?
I've failed miserably at it so far. This year has been my worst reading year in a very, very long time but I might see if I can somehow slot in at least another one or two books from this challenge before the end of the year.

message 26: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 140 comments Me too Michelle!!! Although I've read quite a few books this year I just realised that NONE of them are from this list!!!! Don't even know what I was thinking when I picked them but I may try and read a couple at least before the end of the year.

Becky I think i have 3 or 4 left

Haha Elaine! I had the best of intentions when I chose mine as I really wanted to step out of my reading comfort zone this year but it just wasn't meant to be.

You're doing really well there Becky. I reckon you'll finish this challenge easily!

Oh well you're still reading Michelle so that's the main thing...maybe not as much as you would have liked but it happens. Yes well done Becky.
