Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Here is our "chat room" for our tenth readathon!

I will keep this open even though we haven't started the readathon so we can talk about the books we may want to read during the week of the readathon or to get excited and pumped for the readathon!

message 2: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments I am going to plan wisely! :o) I'll be back with some possibilities.

message 3: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I am also going to try and plan wisely. Don't forget, a challenge will be coming soon so you may want to plan around them!!

Good to know! I LOVE new challenges! :o)

message 5: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments They were just posted. They're pretty general challenges but I don't want to get too specific for a readathon. :)

Oh, they are readathon challenges...I'll go look.

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments I have a question/possible cheat (lol). The Dewey Decimal system categorizes graphic novels as non-fiction (they can be found in the 741s). Does this mean if I find a graphic novella I can use it for both those challenges??

message 8: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments lol! Well I am kind of confused.

Are we talking about A) a non-fiction graphic novel? or B) Or a graphic novel novella?

If A, it would only count as non-fiction if it was actually real. If B, (even though I don't think I have ever seen a graphic novel novella) I guess it would work as long as it wasn't too much over 100 pages. Does that make sense? I don't know if I understood the question.

message 9: by ★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix), snowflakes and eyelashes (new)

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments Haha, yes, I meant graphic novel novella. Which I know isn't really a definitive novella, but the way I'm defining it is as a novella that was made into graphic novel form. (I actually did find one of these!)

But what you're saying is that it can't count as nonfiction unless the TOPIC is actually nonfiction? Not just the call number on the book?

message 10: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Oh, if it is a graphic novel NOVELLA, sure count it! :D

But no. The topic or story has to be nonfiction to count.

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments Ah, okay, thanks! :)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments No problem!

Sofiraindrop | 425 comments Can I use a book for more than one category?

For the challenges? If so, yes.

message 16: by Vicki (last edited Dec 14, 2014 10:41AM) (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Wish me luck, everyone. My husband just told me that he requested the 27th off so that we could spend four days together and his request was granted. :o) So SWEET but such the wrong timing! LOL We work opposite schedules. I get off work at 2:30 and he leaves for work at 2:40. I work Mon-Fri, he works M-W with Thursday and Friday off. Then he works weekend days, so we only get those four evenings together, never entire days unless I'm on vacation time. SO I'm still going to read on the 27th but most likely not as much.

message 17: by ★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix), snowflakes and eyelashes (new)

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments I know the feeling, Vicki! My husband gets home from work at 4:20 pm and I leave for work at 4:30. When I get home he goes to sleep. Sundays are the only day our schedules match. Spend some great quality time together! :) That is definitely what's most important.

message 18: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Yes, you are absolutely right, Nicole! We will have four days in a row together. Usually after Christmas we go shopping for ourselves, big items or things we need like new bedding or whatever.

message 19: by ★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix), snowflakes and eyelashes (new)

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments This is only my husband's and my 2nd Christmas together so we're still figuring out what our traditions and such will be. But that sounds smart! :)

message 20: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Good luck, Vicki! But family is more important! :)

message 23: by ★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix), snowflakes and eyelashes (new)

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments I'm kinda new to the "manga"/"comics"/"graphic novel" scene...are any and all of these acceptable for this challenge? A friend of mine insisted I read some Batman comics she loves and I'm actually getting into them! Just wondering if I can use some for this challenge.

message 24: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Yes! Truthfully, I don't know the differences so any should work for that!

message 25: by ★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix), snowflakes and eyelashes (new)

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments I did a Google search, and some people were like, "There's no difference except for the names", and others were like, "They're all so different!" and I didn't want to use a comic when the rules only specify "manga" if you were one of those purist-type people lol. My comic should cover several challenges! I'm excited! :D

message 26: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Haha! Yeah, I have no idea what the differences are or if there are any lol...

message 27: by ★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix), snowflakes and eyelashes (last edited Dec 15, 2014 04:40PM) (new)

★ℕłℂØℓҾ★ (Nix) (ladyknightnix) | 4549 comments This is what my understanding is now:

Comics: Different plot every issue, certain length and layout expected, more of a Western thing.

Manga: Continued plot throughout series, certain length and layout expected, Japanese in origin.

Graphic Novel: A story plot that has been illustrated, i.e. a novel with lots of nice pictures. ;)

message 28: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Oh, that makes sense! :D I have a better understanding now!

message 29: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 729 comments I was really hoping I wouldn't be scheduled to work on the day of the readathon but I have to go in from 2-6. :( It could be worse though! I'll hopefully read at least 1 or 2 off my tbr before and then try to finish up the rest afterwards! It's going to be an exhausting day, lol!

message 30: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Oh no!! Well just do your best! :D

Kathryn, it's always so fun, unless you are like me and you get all these surprise visits from family/friends right in the middle of it! LOL

Good luck!

message 32: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments So glad you are excited, Kathryn!

LOL, Vicki!

Unfortunately, I am getting sick and if this pounding headache doesn't go away, I am not sure how much reading I will be able to do.

I hope my mum doesn't decide we're going out, because then there would be no changing her mind. I don't think I'll get bored, and if I did, I would switch book or do some excercise, I suppose.

message 35: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Jacque, I hope your headache goes away even if you don't read!! Feel better!!

message 36: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 729 comments Feel better Jacque! I've gotten a bit behind in my reading so my tbr is out the window now, lol! I had it set up so I'd complete all my challenges now but instead I'll just be working on finishing the Mortal Instruments series!

message 37: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Jessica, join the crowd! Lol

message 38: by Sofiraindrop (new)

Sofiraindrop | 425 comments I have a problem cause I don't know if I got the time right. The thing is can't find the equivalent for Spain. Can someone help me?

message 39: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 729 comments Sofia, did you sign up in the Readathon Sign Up thread? Your time should be listed next to your name on the list of participants there.

message 40: by Sofiraindrop (new)

Sofiraindrop | 425 comments Yes, I did. The problem it's not there, it's that I don't know if it is GMT+1 OR +2 , and I can't seem to find it on the internet clearly and am getting confused.

message 41: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 729 comments I looked it up and I found that it's GMT+1. So you should be started at 6 am on the 27th. :)

message 42: by Sofiraindrop (new)

Sofiraindrop | 425 comments THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I really appreciate it, it was messing with my head a lot.

I am excited for the readathon to begin! Is anyone starting to read right when it begins?!

message 46: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I want to start right at the beginning but I don't know..

I'll try!!

message 47: by Krista (new)

Krista | 1550 comments It depends on if I'm awake. Sometimes I am at midnight and other times I'm out at ten lol.

message 48: by Sofiraindrop (new)

Sofiraindrop | 425 comments I'm waking up at 5 45 so I start on time, Jacquelyn

message 49: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments LOL, Krista!

Sofia, great to hear that!

message 50: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 729 comments I'll probably read for a couple of hours at midnight but I'll have to go to sleep so I can get up for work. Then I'll try to read the rest of the afternoon!

Jacque, can we get points for reading partial books or is it only if we start and finish it tomorrow?
