Jim Gorman | 33 comments So, as a relatively new member of the group I have been working the last few years to read all the books on the shelf. But, I have been reading for decades and many I have read in the past.

My question for you is this: Do you count books you read before joining as Read, or do they only count if you read them once you join the group as part of your challenge?

Personally I am re-reading them before I count them against my bookshelf challenge.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I personally would cross them off the list (count them as being read, essentially) if I've EVER read them. For my own challenge, I picked 12 books I haven't read yet, and made that my goal.

The Stars My Destination
Broken Monsters
Cloud Atlas
The Blade Itself
Altered Carbon
The Unkindness of Ghosts
The Song of Achilles
The Children of Time
Station Eleven
Midnight Riot
I, Robot

You can do the challenge however you like. Make it more challenging if that's what you want to do. :)

Melani | 145 comments For the yearly challenge I only count them if I read them that year, so only books I read in 2020 will count for the Seven Wonders challenge. For the bookshelf in general, if I've read it then I've read it and it counts to my number over all.

Reading all the books, I personally count anything I've ever read, but I only count it towards my personal RATB yearly challenge if I've read it in the year I'm doing the challenge. But Becky's right, we don't police it and it should be whatever is fun for you!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Yeah, so I'll count my 12 (or whatever I accomplish by the end of the year) for 2020, but I'm starting with a shorter list of only the books I've never read from the group shelves. If that makes sense.

CBRetriever | 6117 comments for some challenges like the TBR challenges, I don't count it as being read if it's in a Kindle version and I had previously read the paper version. This is only because I bought the kindle version with the intention of reading it.

However, for the bookshelf, I count whether I've ever read it in any form

Jim Gorman | 33 comments I think I will stick with re-reading them, since I liked them all. Half of the re-reads I have in my home library, so not that hard to do.

Thanks for all the input, you guys are the best.

Gabi | 3441 comments Same here: for the yearly challenges I only count the books actually read in said years. For the overall bookshelf I mark those books as read where I can remember some details, cause I've read them so often in my youth (i.e. Dune or LotR), others that I have read, but can't remember anything About, I read again before I count them as read (i.e. Flowers for Algernon)
