Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments My least favorite read last year was The Queen of Hearts by Kimmery Martin. The chapters jumped all over the place in terms of time-lines. Somehow she spent 200 pages talking around the main plot without getting to any sort of twist. And I’ll admit that I didn’t see the twists coming. But not because they were super crazy or anything... but because they were so dang predictable I had just assumed we’d get something better than that. There was also way too much unnecessary commentary about things that had absolutely no bearing on the plot or characters. Things like how one of the characters was willing to splurge on their AV system when renovating their house, or perhaps the Halloween costumes that the young hipsters of Charlotte, NC wear. This type of commentary made me feel like it was definitely a doctor trying to write. But I guess that’s better than a writer trying to perform surgery?

Oh no, I liked Once Upon a River and rated it 4/5! It got mixed reviews at book club, none too strong either way. But no matter if you loved or hated it, it still made for one of the best book club discussions I've ever been to!

Ha, I felt the same way about The Queen of Hearts. (view spoiler) It was so disappointing because I love books about doctors/medicine.
