Tracey (traceyrb) | 365 comments I loved this book. It’s not a hard read but took me a month because of ill health. Isak in the story is a man of great strength and good health and whilst reading it I enjoyed his enjoyment of these blessings. Isak for me was the main character and a real star. The author was really good at characterization and over the book I felt I came to know these people. Especially the family at Sellanra.
Several topics were discussed through the characters. One was concerning infanticide by unmarried women. I thought the author made a good argument for judging these women leniently because of the hardship and social rejection having a child out of wedlock would be to a young woman and her child. I think the author was advocating better support.
The other main character was of course the land. This is essentially a story of man pitting himself against it. The author obviously had reverence both for the land and for those who wisely tended it.
My rating hovered between 4 and 5 stars but in the end I gave it 5 stars as I found the story so interesting and thought provoking.
