2015 Page Challenge
Ooooh! This sounds like fun. Not really sure how to come up with a number though..
I read a couple chunksters every year. I consider those to be books of a thousand pages or more. And I read a bunch of quick hitters.
Lets see.... 1,000 + 1,000 = 2,000. Lets say 300 x 12 = another 3,600..
I'll go out on a limb and say I'll read 7,000 pages this year.
Now I have to put my money where my mouth is...
Not yet. I planned on checking it out when the new year starts. I guess I should take a look so I can see what you're talking about. I am excited about the challenge!!
Just checked it! I never knew that was there. I better up my number quite a bit. I've read 1,900 pages in the last month alone.. I'm gonna have to give this some thinking.
12289 pages so far, with the longest being A Dance with Dragons with 1112 pages. Although to be completely franck, I started it in 2013 and finished it in 2014. So not all pages were read this year.Second longuest should be The Moonstone with 607 pages.
Oh I forgot to mention it but I only joined the site in August. I added a few I remembered reading but there's much more. So looking forward to 2015 and see what I can achieve, because I will be keeping proper track :)
I find that Stats page really cool; I wish we could view more stats, like the monthly ones and lots more.

I've read 33,278 pages so far this year with the longest being 1088 pages. The last couple of years I wasn't recording my books here faithfully, so I don't have a good idea of what my goal should be for 2015. I'm thinking 40,000 or so.
So far this year I have read 15449 pages, I think this will probably be about that for next year or somewhere close. Who knows perhaps I might surprise myself.
I have hit the 8k page mark!
How many pages have you read in 2015?
Don't forget, to check you just need to go to you read shelf, click stats and pages.

what u mean by 8k Ana? I've read 4135 this year. But don't you feel it's kind of stimative, since some books are bigger than others but smaller books can have more pages...
8k = 8 thousand.
To be more precise, 8102.
And no, it's not an estimate, GR takes the # of pages listed for each book you have on your read shelf in 2015 and automatically does the math. Nifty feature.
Several people feel the way you do about adding smaller books which is why they prefer the page count instead of the book count.

I see. But what I mean is the same book in different format can have more or less pages and it is still the same book. For example a book with a large format will have fewer pages than the same book with a small format. You understand what I mean? In the end if you add many small format books (like pocket books for example) you will have the double or triple of pages you would if you added larger formats.
I know what you mean. I don't always take the time to find my exact copy on GR so it will say the book has 300 pages when the one I am holding has 350 or some such. In that case I use percentages when I think of it, but the page count is still a nice feature because I am one of those that feels guilty about the short books. Now I am at 10222.
I usually search by ISBN to get my exact version, but yeah not as fast as just searching for the book title :)
Ahah point taken xD
So I am guessing audiobook lengths don't get translated to page numbers, right?
Not to mention not all the books I read specify the pages in their GR book page, therefore not adding up to stats.
For instance, the versions of the ones I get from netgalley are sometimes not even listed on GR so I have to add them, and there is no information about the pages.
So for those reasons I still prefer to keep track through amount of books instead of pages. Like I said, I end up reading short books and long books and medium length ones so it all kind of evens out in the end.

I think it also matters the number of books you expect to read during the year, which can't be anything else than a big estimate. I have 30 books behind schedule (I don't know how they got this number!). Holy mother of the reading love, I'm late, I'm very late! I must be going now...
I'm not sure how they translate pages for audio books. I do know that if you take the time to specifically choose an audio it gives you percentages, NOT page numbers. I guess I always assumed that it gave you credit for the original released novel (pages). Maybe not.I wonder how we find out. I listen to a lot of books!
Hmm maybe next time you listen to an audiobook, check your stats before and after adding it to read shelf?
For audiobook, page number is actually the number of hours of the track.Ana, as a librarian, you should check this. It's stated in the librarian manual.
That doesn't make much sense...
There are a lot of pages in an hour.
Thanks but I tend not to tinker with what I don't know, this included. So I doubt I will be making any mistakes on this account for others to clean up.

Well, GR works by edition, with all the specific datas of the edition. With that in mind, it seems logical to me to note down the duration for an audiobook and not the page number. But I admit it messes up with the stats. Maybe we could suggest GR to make two stats? One for paper books and one for audiobooks? Or if you want "accurate" stats, you can add a paper version. But here again, it's not going to be very exact, since as someone mentionned before, page number depends on the version you have.
And regarding number of pages read this year so far, I'm at 4138.
I can honestly not think of an ideal way to display that information. But it does seem silly to me that 1 hour = 1 page. It would make more sense to me that 1 minute = 1 page, at least. But then again I am a very slow reader.
I feel tempted to pick a different edition just so the stats will count.

I have made a small effort to choose the original version of a book when I am audio-ing it. I don't care a ton about the stats, but certainly think it's silly to have an hour of listening equal one page because I am always listening to a book in my car.
You can't avoid to be estimate at this regard. First, even with audio corresponding to 1 hour/ 1 page (which I doubt) it still dependes on the format of the book. A small format you will read 3 pages in one hour and a larger format you will read 1 page only. But there is more to it. It also depends on the pace of the reader. People read at different paces and there are different styles of reading: some people read slower than others and there is a tendency to read slower when reading aloud. Also there is a big difference between reading poetry or prose to mension only two different styles. For all that I belive it is always a estimate that is made, but the same with paper books. In the end I don't feel it's all that important. Most important is having fun and enjoy the ride, I mean the reading!
12,847 so far.I took the time to choose an actual audio book version of one I was listening to and don't think I got any page credit, though, so from now on I am choosing the version with the closest cover!
5346 so far.Kandice, you will be credited the number of pages written in for the version you mark as read on GR. As mentionned before, for audiobooks, GR is considering number of hours, so audiobooks will show as much less than the actual number of pages as the "book" version.
Also, make sure to mark your book as read either with the "I'm finished" button on the home page, or mark the date finished, for it to be credited to your 2015 challenge.
I know, but that's why I am not going to choose the audio book version anymore. I can read about 75 pages an hour so getting only 1 page credit per hour for an audio book is ridiculous in my opinion. I just wanted to choose the correct version once and test it out myself.
For me, longest was The Man Who Loved Children with 527 pages. In average, this year, my books have been much shorter than last year (219 pages for 2015 VS 254 pages for 2014).
I was looking back at years past. Some years I just haven't kept track and I really regret that. Other years, I think, "Did I do anything other than read?"!
I never got track of pages, only books, also I don't see the point of it matter of fact. It's just funny!
I kind of like the pages because I often read BRICKS so saying I read only 5 books doesn't seem like much unless you see that those five books had 6000 pages.
On the other hand, saying you read 10 books sounds impressive until you see that that only amounts to 500 pages if they are short.
I see what you mean Kandice. But that brings us back again to one of our previous questions. What means a page? I mean say for example Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witchwhich I'm reading currently for our buddy read. My copy has 400 pages, but they are small pages and it's a pocket size book which I prefer. If it was a big format book I estimate the pages would be around 300 maybe less. And I am not even taking in account the ebook versions which you can change font size and thus change the number of pages.
It's certainly not an exact science, but it gives you an idea at least. I feel a sense of accomplishment! :D
I just finished The Luminaries, which increased my pages read by a huge count. Basically, it accounts for 10% of my pages read this year.

Feel free to set yourselves a goal and also share the # of pages you have read in 2014.
To view your yearly pages read click My Books at the top, then Stats and then Pages. As long as the pages are entered into the book info, it'll add up automatically. If you find the information missing or innacurate and are not a librarian, please post here so one of us can correct the information.
Happy reading!
