Mock Newbery 2026 discussion
Newbery 2021
>
2021 Watch List
I've been looking at some of the new mg releases of 2020 and here are the ones that to me, sound the most distinguished:Clean Getaway by Nic Stone (Publishes January 7)
King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender (Publishes February 4)
Beginners Welcome by Cindy Baldwin (Publishes February 11)
Black Brother, Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhodes (Publishes March 3)
Stand Up, Yumi Chung! by Jessica Kim (Publishes March 17)
These are the three books that I have seen that most seem like 2021 contenders.1. Mananaland by Pam Munoz Ryan
2. The List of Things That Will Not Change by Rebecca Stead
3. The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate
Here are some titles that may be Newbery 2021 contenders:Leaving Lymon by Lesa Cline-Ransome
Here in the Real World by Sara Pennypacker
Coo by Kaela Noel
Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
We Dream of Space Erin Entrada Kelly
A Home for Goddesses and Dogs by Leslie Connor
The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez by Adrianna Cuevas
Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo
I'm excited for Echo Mountain, Lauren Wolk's first book since 2017.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
And for 2021:Parked by Svetcov (brilliant debut)
The One and Only Bob by Applegate
Three Keys by Yang (Front Desk sequel)
Erin wrote: "I'm excited for All the Days Past, All the Days to Come by Mildred Taylor."Me, too. She writes so beautifully.
Everything Sad Is Untrue by Daniel Nayeri sounds very distinguished. I just read about it here: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production.... It releases on August 25, 2020 through Arthur Levine's new publisher.
Erin wrote: "I'm excited for All the Days Past, All the Days to Come by Mildred Taylor."Me, too - but maybe YA (Printz)?
I am really excited for Lois Lowry's new book, On the Horizon, her first novel in verse. It publishes on April 7, 2020.
And I've just skimmed the following nonfiction graphic novel: Astronauts: Women on the final frontier by Jim Ottaviani and Maris Wicks - WOW! (pub date tomorrow)
It took me long enough to finish up my 2019 reading that I haven't read much from 2020 yet. I'm currently in the middle of The Mystwick School of Musicraft , which I think is my favorite Newbery contender so far. Some others that are high on my to-read list are From the Desk of Zoe Washington , When You Trap a Tiger, and A Home for Goddesses and Dogs.
I have downloaded the ARC of Gennifer Choldenko’s Orphan Eleven and Rebecca Stead’s The List of Things That Will Not Change. Can’t wait to start these.
Lisa wrote: "I had an ARC of Village of Scoundrels by Margi Preus and loved it!"Village of Scoundrels was Amazing!
I read Clean Getaway by Nic Stone last month and I really enjoyed it. The author has a great ability to blend history with contemporary times very well. The MC, Scoob, has a very distinct and relatable voice that helped bring the story to life and made the events of the novel seem more realistic.

Amazon is selling HERE IN THE REAL WORLD for $0.99!
I think I voted for the April read but seemed to have missed the winner. Can someone update me please?
Josephine wrote: "I think I voted for the April read but seemed to have missed the winner. Can someone update me please?"Sure, the winner and the group read for April is Here in the Real World by Sarah Pennypacker.
Thanks Shari! I bought the hardcover, but let a student take it home before we left (and before I read it). I'm not sure I'll ever see it again. I can afford $0.99!
Echo Mountain byLauren Wolk. My favorite so far and one of the best books I have read in a long time. Some of the most beautiful writing. Loved it.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
Agreed! Just finished this and it was amazing! Well developed characters, great storyline. Great message of going back to the basic, simple life during challenging times. Very timely for the current year.
I loved the graphic novel When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamison. I not a good judge of what is Newbery quality, I just like good literature and books my students will love.
What did people think of On the Horizon by Lois Lowery? There was a lot of buzz about the The One and Only Bob and since its release I have not heard anything. I was very impressed by On the Horizon- I have not been able to read The One and Only Bob. I thought Mildred Taylor's series ending book was written for an older audience.
The One and Only Bob was a fantastic read and definitely did justice to The One and Only Ivan. Really amazing, totally recommend it.

I would like the following titles for consideration: On the Horizon- Turtle Boy- Music for Tigers- BTW- how many titles contain the word tiger this year??
I would also like to recommend Elephant's Girl by Celesta Rimington. Even though it was a very different story- I made lots of text connections to Beyond the Bright Sea. Hit the Road was hilarious- but I am not sure it would be considered for Newbery. With the exception of Dead End to Norvelt- quirky books don't get much consideration.
Shella wrote: "I would like the following titles for consideration: On the Horizon- Turtle Boy- Music for Tigers- BTW- how many titles contain the word tiger this year??"So far I have seen HOW TO TRAP A TIGER, TIGER HEART and MUSIC FOR TIGERS. I guess it's the year of the Tiger!

I’ve been reading The House in the Cerulean Sea and it is just amazing! Can’t believe how well written it is. Great story!
Not sure we are talking about the same book....and isn’t this for Newbery 2021, not 2022? It would be a wee bit hard to evaluate books for 2022 when they would need to be released in 2021 and this is 2020😁. The book I am referring to is by TJ Klune and was released in March 2020. As for it being an adult book, it is definitely not. It Is very much for children.
I've seen it referred to for teens- do you think it fits the 14 and under group? The cover appears to be marketed to younger than adults- but that does not mean much. Interesting conflict.
