Hi all, I thought it might be a good time to introduce a new challenge and one that might chime nicely with New Year's Resolutions: tackling some of those titles that have been languishing unread for years on our shelves...

Hence the Dusty Book Shelf Challenge.

How to take part:

1. Look at the bottom of your to-read pile and the dusty corners of your shelves. Identify those books that have become neglected - I've been on GoodReads for ten years and have books that I confidently added back then, that I have yet to read. Don't get me started on the physical books that have also been overlooked...

2. Choose either 5 books (beginner level), 10 books (intermediate) or set your own more advanced number. The challenge needs to be completed by 31st Dec 2020. It can happily run in parallel with other challenges, so choose a level that balances with your other reading aims for the year.

3. Set up your thread under this section (The Dusty Book Shelf Challenge). I will do mine so you have an example. Include the books you will be tackling up front - you can use your thread to record your progress (including comments on the books and date of each completion etc).

4. If you want to make it more unpredictable, invite members to tell you which book from your selection you should be tackling next. Just ask.

5. The only rule is that these books MUST be among the oldest from your to-read pile...

Any questions just ask.

Now I will set up my personal thread....

Great, looking forward to seeing your buried treasure, Nicola. :)

To all wanting to join: You will need to go onto the Good Reads desktop site to set up your own thread. If you have problems, let me know and I can get you started.

Bill | 2773 comments I did this somewhat last year, starting with the longest on my shelf, then jumping up to 5 then 10... yada yada.. It was worth it. I'll see if I can do this one this year as well.

Any one wanting to have a go at the Dusty Bookshelf Challenge next year?

I've found it a great way of tackling those books that got forgotten at the bottom of my reading pile.

To take part:

1. Look at the bottom of your to-read pile and the dusty corners of your shelves. Identify those books that have become neglected

2. Choose either 5 books (beginner level), 10 books (intermediate) or set your own more advanced number. The challenge needs to be completed by 31st Dec 2021. It can happily run in parallel with other challenges, so choose a level that balances with your other reading aims for the year.

3. Set up your thread under this section (The Dusty Book Shelf Challenge). You can check out the existing threads for an example.

Now I'm going to take a rummage through my own to read list and set up my challenge for 2021...

Bill | 2773 comments I will take part. I'm doing the same in another group. I've pulled out the 16 books that have been on my goodreads bookshelf the longest. Looking forward to this challenge.

Oh I failed miserably for 2020 and only managed 2 out of 5.
I'd better move the remaining 3 onto 2021 and add two more. What's the betting I read the 2 newer ones first? lol

Never mind, 2021 is a fresh start :)

Helen | 3465 comments 2020 was the year I read at least 10 books that I’d had 5+ years. I managed 3!

Sarahsbookstagram | 1 comments I realise this isn’t a new challenge but I’m doing this Dusty Book Challenge this year. 12 (one each month) of my dustiest. Some books have been on my shelf for nearly 20 years. I just finished one of the oldest, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth which I picked up in a charity shop in 2004 or 2005. It was a whopper at 1300+ pages so hardly surprising I had never tackled it until now. I have a couple of children’s classics bound in red leather which were actually given to my sister when she was a child (she’s 50 this year) and my mum’s copy of Jamaica Inn from the 60s, so these could be the first ones I dust off.

Sounds like a plan Sarah!
Go ahead and set up a thread in this folder, we can then all cheer you on your way. Have fun!

'A Suitable Boy' was on my dusty bookshelf last year too. I was so glad to finally read it (it had been hanging around for over 10 years). Those long books can be seriously daunting!

My dusty bookshelf is poised for 2024. Take a look at my thread if you want to see what I'll be reading...
