Mary (morenin_ntal) Finished City of Schemes and turned out to really like the second half. Currently clearing out some partially finished books until I can start the book of the month tomorrow. Next up, The Kill Society.

Kristie | 5928 comments I don't think I have enough time to finish my RL book club book on time, so I'm going to skip it for now and move on to The Newcomer The Newcomer by Mary Kay Andrews which I should really review before it publishes on May 4th.

Mary (morenin_ntal) The Kill Society The Kill Society (Sandman Slim, #9) by Richard Kadrey is the best I've read of the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey so far. I should know by now to look for the twist at the end, but it really caught me this time! Very good set up for the next book. Now I'm moving on to A Plague of Giants A Plague of Giants (Seven Kennings, #1) by Kevin Hearne , by Kevin Hearne since I've read most of the Iron Druid series by the same author. It's in an original world this time, so I'm interested to see how that changes his storytelling.

I'm curious what you will think of A Plague of Giants. I read his Iron Druid series and enjoyed it, but couldn't get into A Plague of Giants. It may have just been the timing for me or it might have been the writing/story. I'm not really sure.

PamG (lynguy1) | 1025 comments I finished the last book on my April TBR last night.
The Guest List The Guest List by Lucy Foley by Lucy Foley.
There are so many great reviews on this one. Unfortunately, mine isn't one of those.

My 2 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I'm going to finish Hounds Abound Hounds Abound (Pet Rescue Mystery, #3) by Linda O. Johnston by Linda O. Johnston next.

I'm having trouble getting into it, so I've paused for a palette refresher. A Thousand Ships A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes by Natalie Haynes is so fantastic so far I haven't been able to put it down. It contrasts nicely to The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller The Song of Achilles.

message 1760: by Mary (new)

Mary (morenin_ntal) I finished A Thousand Ships, and it was fantastic. My only complaint is the timelines in the book didn't always line up properly, which could be distracting. Back to A Plague of Giants. I'm finding it dense and hard to get into so far.

I liked it, learned a few things (even on, heaven forbid, football!), but she could have made her arguments stronger.

Mary (morenin_ntal) I am currently double fisting books. I am balancing To Sleep in a Sea of Stars for the botm, and The Cat Who Saw Red The Cat Who Saw Red (Cat Who... #4) by Lilian Jackson Braun by Lilian Jackson Braun for something lighter to relax with. I'm up to chapter 3 of A Plague of Giants, and it's just not clicking for me yet. Too many characters introduced all at once, and too much world building over storytelling early on.

World-building is great fun when it's done well, but not when it overwhelms the story. What's the point, then?

PattyMacDotComma I was pleased to see Mary Anning added to the Little People BIG DREAMS series by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara. All kids love collecting things, so they'd enjoy seeing how this little girl grew up finding fossils and becoming famous.

PattyMacDotComma Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo is the long-awaited sequel to the popular Nobody's Fool. I'm happy to report that Sully and all were still at their stations in the White Horse and Hattie's when I left. (But you'll want to stay clear of the dog.)

PattyMacDotComma It's almost beyond me how Aussie journalist Shannon Molloy survived his teens as a gay kid in a country town, but I'm glad he did! His memoir, Fourteen: My year of darkness, and the light that followed is sad and funny and worth a listen.

PattyMacDotComma I can see a market opening up for dog buttons! How Stella Learned to Talk: The Groundbreaking Story of the World's First Talking Dog is a fascinating look at author Christina Hunger's work with pre-lingual kids who need help communicating and how she adapted her techniques so her dog Stella can communicate.
