Finished City of Schemes and turned out to really like the second half. Currently clearing out some partially finished books until I can start the book of the month tomorrow. Next up, The Kill Society.

I finished reading Leopard's Rage
by Christine Feehan.My 3 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I don't think I have enough time to finish my RL book club book on time, so I'm going to skip it for now and move on to The Newcomer
which I should really review before it publishes on May 4th.
The Kill Society
is the best I've read of the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey so far. I should know by now to look for the twist at the end, but it really caught me this time! Very good set up for the next book. Now I'm moving on to A Plague of Giants
, by Kevin Hearne since I've read most of the Iron Druid series by the same author. It's in an original world this time, so I'm interested to see how that changes his storytelling.
Finishing off Charged: Overzealous Prosecutors, the Quest for Mercy, and the Fight to Transform Criminal Justice in America. Very well written.

I read his Iron Druid series and enjoyed it, but couldn't get into A Plague of Giants. It may have just been the timing for me or it might have been the writing/story. I'm not really sure.
I finished the last book on my April TBR last night. The Guest List
by Lucy Foley. There are so many great reviews on this one. Unfortunately, mine isn't one of those.
My 2 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm going to finish Hounds Abound
by Linda O. Johnston next.

It may have just been the timing for me or it might have been the writing/story. I'm not really sure. I'm having trouble getting into it, so I've paused for a palette refresher. A Thousand Ships
by Natalie Haynes is so fantastic so far I haven't been able to put it down. It contrasts nicely to
The Song of Achilles.
I finished a cozy mystery: Hounds Abound
by Linda O. Johnston.My 3 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished A Thousand Ships, and it was fantastic. My only complaint is the timelines in the book didn't always line up properly, which could be distracting. Back to A Plague of Giants. I'm finding it dense and hard to get into so far.
Tom Allen is Actually Not Very NiceThis is an audio collection not a book as such, and very enjoyable.
4 stars.

I'm going to try and read mainly 2021 releases this month and am starting with The Conductors. Hopefully we've got some gems this year.
Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma OluoI liked it, learned a few things (even on, heaven forbid, football!), but she could have made her arguments stronger.

hey everyone, I've been away for awhile buddy with work but I just finished Go by Kazuki Kaneshiro, Btw, 4 star read, now I'm going to finish reading All the Light We Cannot See. So far, I am also enjoying this book
I am currently double fisting books. I am balancing To Sleep in a Sea of Stars for the botm, and The Cat Who Saw Red
by Lilian Jackson Braun for something lighter to relax with. I'm up to chapter 3 of A Plague of Giants, and it's just not clicking for me yet. Too many characters introduced all at once, and too much world building over storytelling early on.

World-building is great fun when it's done well, but not when it overwhelms the story. What's the point, then?
I was pleased to see Mary Anning added to the Little People BIG DREAMS series by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara. All kids love collecting things, so they'd enjoy seeing how this little girl grew up finding fossils and becoming famous.

I just enjoyed Trust, the third of Aussie author, journalist, and former foreign correspondent Chris Hammer's Martin Scarsden series. Sydney is at its corrupt, murderous worst.

I'm doing a reading challenge that a local independent bookstore shared for 2021. It's nice to have the different genres/themes to explore. This is the book I'm currently reading for that challenge...
Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo is the long-awaited sequel to the popular Nobody's Fool. I'm happy to report that Sully and all were still at their stations in the White Horse and Hattie's when I left. (But you'll want to stay clear of the dog.)

Here is my 3 star review of a cozy historical mystery: The Deadly Mystery of the Missing Diamonds
by T.E. Kinsey. This is the first novel in a spin-off series.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong - a new voice for meMy review - www.Goodreads.com/review/show/3739130086
Reading Bellevue: Three Centuries of Medicine and Mayhem at America's Most Storied Hospital and it is excellent.
Catching up on the review of another book I didn't really love - 3 stars
The Colour of Bee Larkham’s Murderhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished reading the 4th book in The Mortal Instruments, City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra ClareHere’s my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
And I also finished To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin
Here’s my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I’m currently reading the 5th book in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Lost Souls
I'm working on the Princesses of Westfalin Series. Then I'm gonna start Harry Potter. I've never read them 😬
It's almost beyond me how Aussie journalist Shannon Molloy survived his teens as a gay kid in a country town, but I'm glad he did! His memoir, Fourteen: My year of darkness, and the light that followed is sad and funny and worth a listen.

I can see a market opening up for dog buttons! How Stella Learned to Talk: The Groundbreaking Story of the World's First Talking Dog is a fascinating look at author Christina Hunger's work with pre-lingual kids who need help communicating and how she adapted her techniques so her dog Stella can communicate. And boy, does Stella 'talk'! Terrific!

I began the Harry Potter series for the first time ever. I wasn't allowed to read it as a child and I didn't see the movies til college. This will be an adventure.
Margaret wrote: "I began the Harry Potter series for the first time ever. I wasn't allowed to read it as a child and I didn't see the movies til college. This will be an adventure."I hope you love it, Margaret! I really enjoyed the whole series.
The Last Reunion by Aussie Kayte Nunn is historical fiction with a war story (Burma), romance, and mystery (stolen works of art).

I loved Aussie author Garry Disher's country cop mystery in the dry, dusty (dangerous) outback of South Australia. Peace is the 2nd book featuring demoted cop Hirsch. The powers-that-be did not appreciate his whistle-blowing.
4.5~5★ Link to my review of Peace
I finished An American Witch in Paris
by Michele Hauf. My 3 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm currently reading
The Smoking Gun Sisterhood by Thad Brown.
I finished The Cat Who Saw Red by Lilian Jackson Braun. Not as good as some, with a particularly gory ending. I'm now on to The Cat Who Turned On and Off
.
Way to go, Christine!I finished The Cat Who Turned On and Off and picked up the next book in the series I haven't read, The Cat Who Played Brahms
.
