Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I do this challenge every year on my blog, and thought it would be fun if I kept track of the books I was reading for it on here as well!

YES! Would love to see you keeping track on here too! Good luck

Thanks Brittany!

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments So this challenge doesn't really need all that much explaining, basically I just read a list of books from my TBR over the course of a year, but they have to be books that I owned before 2020, nothing bought new this year, the idea being that you knock off older books from your TBR. I get people on Twitter to vote for what I read and this is what I'm going to be reading this year, I read one book a month:

-January- Circe by Madeline Miller
-February- Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell
-March- Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars, #1) by Elizabeth Lim
-April- The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1) by Roshani Chokshi
-May- The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings, #2) by Mackenzi Lee
-June- The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty
-July- King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1) by Leigh Bardugo
-August- The Dead Queens Club by Hannah Capin
-September- Sherwood by Meagan Spooner
-October- City of Ghosts (Cassidy Blake, #1) by Victoria Schwab
-November- Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1) by Robin Hobb
-December- Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

I'll keep this thread updated with thoughts on the books throughout the year, should be fun!

City of brass is one of my favourite books 😍

message 9: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Great to see you guys loved City of Brass! My friend Nicola also loved it, and I'm trying out more adult fantasy, so I'm hoping I will also enjoy it!

message 10: by Jo (last edited Feb 03, 2020 01:00AM) (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I finished my first book for this challenge of 2020, Circe by Madeline Miller which also happened to be the BOTM for January which was great, two birds one stone! I really enjoyed Circe, it was written well, I loved Circe as a character and I thought it was really cool how Miller weaved lots of different Greek myths into her story. My one niggle would be (view spoiler)

message 11: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments My next read for this challenge will be Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell though I probably won't be starting it for another couple of weeks as I am currently reading Truthwitch (The Witchlands, #1) by Susan Dennard .

message 12: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I finished Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell last weekend and I liked it, but it took a lot longer than I thought it would and I felt the story lagged at times. Currently reading my next book for this challenge Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars, #1) by Elizabeth Lim .

message 13: by Jo (last edited Apr 01, 2020 03:15PM) (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Finished Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars, #1) by Elizabeth Lim and I liked it, I thought it was a really fun and creative story, but it was a little slower than I would have liked and felt a lot longer than 387 pages!
Also the ending kind of pissed me off (view spoiler)

message 14: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I'm going to read my April TBR book, The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1) by Roshani Chokshi next. I'm quite interested to read this one, as I've heard very mixed things, so hopefully I fall into the camp that loves it and not the one that hates it!

message 15: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
Good luck!

Also too bad about a not so great ending for Spin the Dawn

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Brittany wrote: "Good luck!

Thanks! It should be a good one for me, it's got heists and it's historical fantasy, both of which usually work out well. Yeah, I was really disappointed because I was enjoying the book up to that point.

message 17: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
Heists and historical fantasy are loves of mine as well.
That's the worst when the end ruins it.

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Brittany wrote: "Heists and historical fantasy are loves of mine as well.

It really is! I've actually switched it out for City of Brass, so I'll be reading The Gilded Wolves later on in the year.

message 19: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I finished The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty and I loved it! Cannot wait to read the sequel when I'm done with my current audiobook. I'll be taking a break from challenge reads and reading Children of Virtue and Vengeance (Legacy of Orïsha, #2) by Tomi Adeyemi next, and then I'll be moving onto my May read The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings, #2) by Mackenzi Lee .

Ah!! I need to read Lady's Guide too! Buddy read?! I just put a hold on it should be in by early May.

So glad to see you enjoyed City of Brass. It's one of my favourite series. I'm trying to see whether I can fit a re-read of the first two books in before the third one releases.

Yes it was awesome. Still got a few months till the third one comes out, though I don't know, those are quite chunky books!

Are you listening or reading it? I should have it in a week or so. Just need to finish Naughts and Crosses first!

I'm reading it, got the hardback from Foyles last year.

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
I just got it early from the library so am good to start whenever. I'll go make a buddy read thread.

message 27: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I've still got my current read to finish, but I'm hoping I'll be done with that by next Friday, so should be good to start then? Will let you know if I'm finished earlier!

message 28: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
Sounds good. I'll probably start before then as I don't have an audiobook going right now and don't want to start a new one. But it should take me awhile to read.

message 29: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments No worries, I'll catch up once I'm done with my current read!

message 30: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I just started my May read, The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings, #2) by Mackenzi Lee . Brittany and I have a buddy read of this one going on, so if any of you would like to join in, the thread is here:

Yes join us! The more the merrier!

message 32: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Okay, so I'm reading City of Ghosts (Cassidy Blake, #1) by Victoria Schwab for my May PIFM now, so I'm going to drop it from the challenge and read the sequel Tunnel of Bones (Cassidy Blake, #2) by Victoria Schwab in October instead! It still counts as a backlist book from my TBR, even if it is very recent backlist!

message 33: by Kayleigh {K-Books}, YA Fantasy Fan (new)

Kayleigh {K-Books} (kayley_12) | 2296 comments Mod
Oh I loved City of Ghosts and Tunnel of Bones. They're such great reads. Super fun.

message 34: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments That's great to hear! I don't usually read much middle grade but it's VE Schwab, so I had to. Figured this year was a good year to catch up since the third book isn't coming out till next year.

message 35: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I finished The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings, #2) by Mackenzi Lee today and I really enjoyed it! Excited to read the final book when it comes out this August. That was my TBR book for May, so moving onto City of Ghosts (Cassidy Blake, #1) by Victoria Schwab which I've now swapped out of the challenge as Heather chose it for me for May's PIFM.

message 36: by Kayleigh {K-Books}, YA Fantasy Fan (new)

Kayleigh {K-Books} (kayley_12) | 2296 comments Mod
I'm the same. I don't really like MG either but it was VE Schwab so naturally I had to read it haha

message 37: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments The only ones I still tend to read are Rick Riordan bit when I love an author, I read everything they write!

message 38: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments So after some reshuffling The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1) by Roshani Chokshi is my June read and I didn't really see any point in starting something else for May when I'm unlikely to finish it by Sunday so I've started it early. Hoping I'll enjoy it!

message 39: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6446 comments Mod
I'm curious about that one!

message 40: by Jo (new)

message 42: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments I'm not very far through yet, but loving the squad dynamic so far!

message 43: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Okay so I finished The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1) by Roshani Chokshi and I really enjoyed it. This group of friends is one of my absolute new favourite squads, it was a lot funnier than I was expecting and I will definitely be reading more of Roshani Chokshi's work, I've already preordered The Silvered Serpents. (view spoiler)

message 44: by Jo (last edited Jun 09, 2020 01:53PM) (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments My next challenge read will be King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1) by Leigh Bardugo but I won't be reading that till the beginning of July, I finished my June challenge book earlier than I normally would as I started with a few days left of May. Six books down, six to go and we're almost halfway through the year, so perfectly on track!

Awesome Jo!! Keep it going

message 46: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Thanks!

message 47: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Started my July challenge book, King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1) by Leigh Bardugo a few days early since there's only a few days of June left.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on King of Scars :)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Kayleigh {K-Books} wrote: "I can't wait to hear your thoughts on King of Scars :)"

I'm so excited to be back with these characters again!

message 50: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Finished King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1) by Leigh Bardugo , which I enjoyed though it was kind of slow throughout and the two story threads didn't really seem to fit together. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel though, as I feel like this book was kind of intended to be mainly setup for that.

Next I'm going to be reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0) by Suzanne Collins before moving on to my August book The Dead Queens Club by Hannah Capin .
