finished part 1, and am definitely enjoying it. I like the hints about the differences between the Priory's religion and Virtudom. I'm a bit confused, though, why Inys tradition has airbrushed the fierceness of Coralinda (sp?) - the Mother and progenitor of the Berenth queens - given they are a queendom and so have no problems with politically powerful women.
There are a lot of dim boys in the Inys court, aren't there? first Triam Sulyard vanishing off to the East assuming that the boss there would listen to a castaway (effectively) and then Loth letting himself be infected by the plague just because the nice queen sweet talks him into it!
and I enjoyed Onren taking Tane to task for being unwontedly disparaging about her training habits - Onren had a point that balance over flogging yourself to death is healthier.

I found the first part very slow, being mostly atmosphere, world building & set up of characters and issues. Part 2 was an utter romp with so much action going on, so it was a bit odd that part 3 slowed down again. Not badly, and on balance I appreciated the unravelling of riddles in East & West, as well as the political intriguing in part 4.
What I did miss in part 4 especially was more time in the East. Whilst I do like the characters in the West more that's probably because we spend more time with them than with Tane. I guess that's about to change though...

No worries :) I am just in need of good fantasy right now, so whenever there is downtime (after dishes, after dog walk...) I fly to the book :)
So, I finished it! Last week, actually, because I got sucked into the audio & the story.
Overall I very much enjoyed the story, but it was all rushed at the end, with the climax being over and done very fast in a "oh. is that it?" sort of a way. I'd've liked more explanation as to why the Eastern dragons were good and the Western ones bad (and indeed, why it was East & West like that at all - my bad if it was explained & I missed it though)

I'm still where I was at 2 or even 3 weeks ago, namely somewhere at the beginning of the first part... *fail*
I'll get this current book out of the way that I need for a challenge and then I'll devote some serious time to this. Hopefully.
I think this just isn't the book I should be reading when there is a team challenge on at the same time.

I felt that for most of the first part, but it does speed up after that section is over!
I bet you've got the three inch thick hard copy, right? which is never gonna help with the reading at any time probably needed to get into a massive standalone fantasy with all the worldbuilding that happens at the start :(
but I know you can do it!

I'm just too slow a reader for this kind of doorstop while reading other books for a team challenge, but I really, really want to read it and I don't even mind the doorstop hardcover :-D Though it really isn't handy haha.
Reactivating this for a Buddy Read starting on or around 1st June - to be determined by the participants.

*hides in shame*"
Will not back off this time E.. TT is important 😅

A rather large BOM was added by the mods which I think a lot of us may be reading as well, so I've been wondering if you might want to put the start date of this one a little later rather than beginning of June (which is underway already hehe).
Or we're just going to read this a little slower - what do you guys think?

You can guys can always go ahead as well if you don't want to start later. I'll just read it whenever then.
The Mod BOM starts on 8th June and is a 500+ page read.

On the 15th, Empire of the Vampire BR is going to start haha.
I'd personally go for July for this book but I completely understand if not everybody is willing to wait that long.

Don't worry about it! :-)
As I said, if you guys want to go ahead, please feel free to!
I don't mind having to read it on my own if it should come to that :-)

E, Rosina and I can post our thoughts under spoiler tags, so you can go through them as you read. And I'm definitely up for nerding out even once I'm done reading.

I will probably start this weekend and use spoiler tags.
Looking forward to finally reading this book.
I can start it this weekend for a bit as well - it's a long weekend but once the BOM starts, I probably won't be able to keep up.
But spoiler tags are the best way to go anyway since someone else might still join later and Sehrish is going to read it, too, so spoiler tags for sure :-)

That's a shame! There ARE a lot of characters, and since it's separated into West and East, it doesn't make it very easy either.
Sehrish and I are going to start towards the end of the week if you want to reconsider and we aren't going to be moving through this in huge steps. :-)

I will try to keep reading....I never like DNFing a book

Indeed!
Relaxed tempo as well. And then we'll finally reply to all of the previous comments under spoiler tags :-)

Uuuuh that sounds like fun! :-D
And no.. haven't started yet either *cough*
I'll start slowly I think with a few pages in the evening this week, though starting tomorrow only, and then dive in more fully this weekend.

In typical E way, something else came up. I am currently reading a highly anticipated release in a series I love, and then once I'm done, I'll start on this. Finally!!
I will also be off work for a week soon, so I should be able to read it over the course of that week at the latest - from 10th September onwards.

haha! no worries at all E! I just started and to be honest I am a bit lost.. there's lots going on...
I think it's one of those books where you'll just have to go with the flow for the first few chapters and slowly let the setting sink in.
Also: loots of characters!

Finally started, later than expected, but there were other things getting in the way.
There are a lot of characters and there's the setting to learn but I'm liking it.
It's going to take me long to read, at least until I'm fully into the story, but I'm enjoying it so far. Especially the division between East and West regarding the dragons/wyrms worship.
