Narilka | 5715 comments I started on Wednesday. Work has been keeping me so busy I've been too exhausted to read much or post at all. I think I'm one chapter in. It's just been picking back up with the characters. I should get going with speed this weekend.

Narilka | 5715 comments I must be the only one reading this right now :) Considering how behind I am I'll likely go straight on to book 3 when I finish.

Through Ch 11 (view spoiler)

I read this 2 days ago, and forgot to comment... I liked it more than my first read-through, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow to comment more...

Alright... so... haven't been doing a very good job of hitting BRs on-time lately... I just haven't been in the mood for the BRs I signed up for, and it's been a matter of reading at the right time/order to maximize enjoyment... and Zaara pointed out that me being late means I outpace less people (good excuse :D)

Anyway... I liked this a lot more on re-read... part of it is probably knowing the story/world better, and how everything is going to play out... in that regard, this book felt like it had less stakes, despite it having plenty of stakes going in blind, I think... you just trust Janelle & everyone to come in and swat everyone down, when they can't ignore the problem any longer... that seems like the author's problem/risk with this series (and maybe all her series?)... one side is just ridiculously more powerful than the other, and she has to spend all her time creating imaginary roadblocks to success...

Re:the rest... I get so focused on my annoyance with Janelle's amnesia, that I forgot all about Daemon's shitty situation in this book...

Re:animals: I see you have Stuff and Nonsense on your TBR...

Definitely need to jump into book 3, if we're going to be ready for book 10's release... and work has been similarly busy for me... eeking out as much reading time as possible, to the detriment of discussion/etc, is the only reason I've maintained my January numbers into February, because I don't get as much reading done at work as I used to...

I haven't read her Others series yet. Interesting to know she follows a similar pattern.

I agree with the less stakes thing and probably for some of the same reason. Which is weird because even knowing how book one was going to end I still felt anxious about Jeanelle's situation. Ilona Andrews wrote a blog post on the concept of "escalation units" and how usually it's these units stacks on top of each other that moves things along. For example: "Character is presented with an obstacle -> character overcomes obstacle -> the triumph creates a new, even harder obstacle." In action: "Indiana Jones makes his way through a Nazi camp and finds the site of the buried Arc of the Covenant only to be buried alive in it. " I wonder if it's maybe because of the slice of life mixed in with the action that it's slowed the pacing and tension down? The resolution of the escalation is too.. I don't know, doesn't amount to much other than good guys win? Never really thought my way through it before.

Now it's going to be on my mind when I read tonight :)

@Narilka,
Nope not alone. I'm here for the trilogy and I'm also superlate and still reading, started today and I'm 1/3 in, nothing much has happened except
33% (view spoiler)

That scene of Daemon (view spoiler)

So far, I felt like I'm rereading Book 1. Middle book woes...but I guess more stuff will happen by the end...

WB Zaara! Can't wait to see what you think :)

I found this entry a tad frustrating because I know where they're going and kept wanting to skip ahead lol Its the first time I've felt that way during a reread of the trilogy. Maybe I'm more impatient these days.
