I love it there. I usually visit my sister on Oahu and I've been to Molokai'i. I'd like to visit some of the other islands. We were stranded in the Maui airport for several hours when our plane couldn't land on Molokai'i, but that doesn't count.

Kristie | 19218 comments That must have been a wonderful experience, Janice. I'd love to go to Hawaii. I've never been. I still loved Moloka'i though.

Sarah | 18550 comments I read Vicious for the toppler but i didn't finish it in time. 5 hours too late. Whoops. It was good though and it counts for twisted trivia. Amd now back to The Godfather for the monthly challenge. Hopefully i don't finish that too late.

Try this again - third time's the charm??

I really enjoyed Vicious and its sequel Vengeful. Now I'm waiting for the next book to be published.

message 256: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I will definitely continue the series Janice!

Janice (jamasc) | 60010 comments I finished my monthly challenge read: Geisha, a Life. It was interesting, but not all that engaging.

I've upset the apple cart. I can't abide the narration of my current audiobook The Bear and the Serpent so I've requested a refund for it and its sequel. So I'm undecided about audiobook.

I decided I'm not going to read Tess of The D'ubervilles (my print read option) since I don't get along with classics all that much and I'm not in the mood.

I have to revise my plans and I'm not sure what I want to do. First world problems. I'll have to sort this out tonight because I need to get to work.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started The Starless Sea for a buddy read, and I'll also use it for the Trivia Challenge.

My cousin highly recommended it. Usually, when she recommends a book it's worth reading. :)

PattyMacDotComma The Good Turn by Aussie/Irish author Dervla McTiernan is her best one yet! Irish detective Cormac Reilly is trying to fight crime and his superiors (I use the term loosely) at the same time.

Janice (jamasc) | 60010 comments I've sorted things out! I contacted Audible and they refunded me two credits for the two books. I was surprised because I purchased them in 2017! I've crossed the series off my tracking system, deleted them off the twisted trivia spreadsheet. Poof! Gone.

I started reading The Kind Worth Killing on audiobook. And I will start Possessing the Secret of Joy on paperback tonight. Both books are the oldest on my tbr. Feels good to finally tackle them.

She just recorded a track with Amanda Palmer in the past weeks for Amanda's bushfire fundraising album she released on Friday. So she's definitely still out and about doing things!

I will start Things in Jars tonight. My library hold became available for download yesterday.

Kristie | 19218 comments Janice wrote: "I put Possessing the Secret of Joy back on the shelf to try another day - or not."

I don't think Alice Walker and I get on. I only read one book by her, The Color Purple, and I gave it two stars. It was very highly rated by others, but not for me. I usually don't base my opinions of an author on just one book, but I have no interest in picking up any of her other books after reading that one.

message 275: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60010 comments I find that it flits around, giving snippets of information from which you need to piece the story together. It takes too much energy.

message 276: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19218 comments I went back to look at my review for The Color Purple. It basically said I was bored and confused, not a good combination. So, yes, I can imagine piecing that together would take a bit of energy.

message 277: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I found The Color Purple disappointing too. I gave it 3 stars but it might have been more like 2.5. Lol, I never considered she wrote other books!

I just heard they are making a tv series on this one.

message 285: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60010 comments I finished The Kind Worth Killing. I have it marked that it was recommended by Travis! It was a wide ride. I'm not sure if there were any characters with redeeming qualities.

I'm going to reread A Monster Calls for my real life book club meeting in March.

message 286: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I'm struggling with The Starless Sea but I'm interested enough to keep going. It definitely needs all of my concentration so I will be taking my time.

I started If You Want to Make God Laugh. I'm not very far into it but it is a delight! This is for the TT challenge.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I abandoned Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I didn't like the writing style and I found the whole thing to be pretty boring.

I then read The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse which was absolutely delightful. Here is my short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting Green Darkness.

I'm having a bit of trouble getting into it. I'm intrigued, but it seems like the author is trying to impress with her descriptions. Maybe that will sort itself out as the storyline gets developed more. I just want to get into the story.

I felt the same way so I put it aside in order to read other books I had borrowed from the library. I figured I come back to it but my borrow time expired. I'll put myself back on the waitlist at some point.

Roz | 4544 comments Right now I'm listening to Golden in Death so I can finish this looong series. I had started reading the hard copy but had to return it before finishing. I should be done soon.
I'm also reading Mr. Nobody for the Yearlong (Card 25 Yay Sports) and really liking it.
Fortunately I'm on vacation in Aruba and have had plenty of time to put a dent in my reading "obligations".

I was reading more last night and it is getting better. There is more dialogue now. However, I picked it up this morning and came across this, "Oh, and it was a fine room: with glass-fronted cabinets and a polished-wood desk and shelves of leather-coated books. And framed by the window, lawn as far as the eye could see, then the sails of boats in the distance. But Bridie was gazing at the jar, not at the view."

If Bridie is looking at the jar and not the view, why describe the view? It's irrelevant.

I will continue with it for now but I do feel an annoyance with the over-description of every minute detail.

It is a very long series, isn't it? I have some of the books on ebook and audiobook and then I'm not sure whether I'll continue or not. It will depend on whether my interest continues and if I can get them at the library.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I am reading An American Marriage. It is a poignant picture of a marriage suffering through a husbands incarceration.. It touches on how unfair my country's justice system can be to people of color. It is a really thought provoking book
