The new one released this year is made by BBC and HBO. Lots of familiar faces in there. I highly recommend, if you can get your hands on it. And coz it's made with the BBC there are only 8 episodes in the series, so not too long.

However, I am not sure if it would be better to read the book first... It may be actually.

Anyway, much much better than The Golden Compass with Nicole Kidman.

I have that planned for task this year.

Sarah | 18550 comments I read The Calculating Stars for the group read. A great alternate history. It wasn't what I expected. I was expecting my sci-fi but it's not. Sure it focuses on space missions, but it's more than that. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now on to The Silent Patient fir the buddy read.

message 56: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Mistletoe which I rated 4 stars. It was a really enjoyable ghost story and a great way to get back into reading again. Here is my short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now rereading The Binding. I read it last year and enjoyed it, and it's one of those books that I always said I would like to read again. Now is that time 🙂

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my series book Locked Rooms and did not read the "sneak preview" of the next book. I loved it! I think Mary and SH are out of my system for a few months more.
I picked back up with The Calculating Stars and can start back with the shuffle of the other two print books I had already started and my audiobook, which is at 58%.

PattyMacDotComma The Prettiest Horse in the Glue Factory is the wonderful title of popular Aussie comedian Corey White's unique memoir. He is one of those kids who fell through the cracks of "the system" and landed in some inexcusably bad foster care. It's a terrific read!

mars (marsandphun) Picked up on The Silent Patient again, I'd been uninspired to actually read it but I refuse to make dnfing a habit i guess. I'm now listening to the audiobook.

That's disappointing, Mars. Are you in a bit of a rut or is it just that book that isn't working for you?

message 64: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments I finished The Ten Thousand Doors of January, which was a 3 stars for me.

I started yesterday Strange Pilgrims, and will start today For the Love of Men: A New Vision for Mindful Masculinity.

I'm really enjoying it. The short chapters actually make me keep reading.

Kristie | 19218 comments I finished Dread Nation for the buddy read. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the second one.

I'm starting The Art of Hearing Heartbeats for my RL book club.

I'm not so sure. I guess it just wasn't what I expected of it? I don't know, I'm just not 100% into it

Will be interested what you think, Kristie.

message 74: by mars (new)

mars (marsandphun) I had finished The Silent Patient. Now I think I'm emotionally stable enough to start The Nightingale. I didn't think I'd have the courage to take such a risk after The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo left me bawling my eyes out. I know The Nightingale's is going to through some heart punches, too. But surprisingly I cannot wait. I'm ready.

I think I'll also pick back up on Amelia Westlake Was Never Here while I'm at it.

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished reading The Silent Patient for the buddy read and twisted trivia. I'm just starting Recursion. Just because at the moment as it is a stand-alone book. It may well fit into twisted trivia but we'll see.

Recursion will fit Card 16 - Art/Literature: Nay - genre is time travel, if you have that task. . I'm hoping to get to it by the end of the month.

Jayme | 4545 comments I finished Eventide the second book in the Plainsong trilogy. Absolutely loved it. Reminded me how lucky I was to grow-up in my little hometown in Minnesota. Currently reading A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny. Need a little murder investigation after my walk down memory lane :)

You're a star Jayme! Thank you. Yes I too have that task to do :-)

message 82: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I abandoned The Girl You Left Behind. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't mind the story set during WW1, but I really wasn't enjoying the parts set in the modern day at all and sadly, more time was being spent there than in the past. It was jarring to say the least. I loved Me Before You, but this one wasn't for me at all.

As for my reread of The Binding, I'm enjoying it just as much as I did the first time round :)

message 84: by Cherie (last edited Jan 13, 2020 04:51PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I listened to two very good audiobooks over the weekend. Both fit my Twisted Trivia challenge. The Birchbark House and Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?. I started listening to Red Harvest, just because. The MC is a nameless detective referred to as The Continental Op. It is a classic crime/mystery noir written in the early 1930s.

I am almost finished with The Ten Thousand Doors of January. I will move over to Dread Nation and The Calculating Stars after that. I still have Captain Blood Returns and King Rat to finish before starting any more.

The Binding was one of my favourites from last year Lisa.

I finished The Silent Patient last night and it was one of those books that made my wish I had the physical copy just so I could throw it at the wall! It was a buddy read and it will fit a task for the tt challenge.

I'm really enjoying Conclave. I've wondered what was going on behind the scenes with those princes of the church!!!

message 88: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5198 comments I am currently reading Throne of the Crescent Moon fr the monthly challenge. So far, so good. It is a fun fantasy story.

I am listening to The Silent Patient for the buddy read, I am about at 25%. I cannot say I do not like it but I am not excited about it either.

message 89: by Cherie (last edited Jan 14, 2020 07:14PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Red Harvest. It was okay. I doubt if I will read/listen to any more in this series. Crime noir is not really my cup of tea. I have to care about the characters, and this did not instill any emotions at all. He could have had a name, at least.

I started To Kingdom Come. Now, these guys, I can care about.
Janice - I saw what you said about getting caught up listening to the accents in the audiobook. I'm trying not to let it distract me. :o)

I can't wait to read that one. I just read the first Orphan X book and as soon as I'm done my RL book club book I'm going to work through the rest of the series.

Janice (jamasc) | 60010 comments I decided to not complete The Map of Salt and Stars. I'm struggling to stay awake long enough to read more than one page at a time.

I'm supposed to be reading The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules for my real life book club next week. But I don't want to read it. It has a 3.2 rating on GR's, and I haven't really enjoyed the Scandinavian humour that I've read (The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared and The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83¼ Years Old). I'm being really whiny about this book, aren't I?

message 98: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments Janice, I've been more moody and picky than usual at chosing books. I don't know why.

message 99: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hm Janice, I'm not Scandinavian! (Hendrik Groen is by a Dutch author ;-))

I enjoyed the 100 year old man and I've seen the book you mention before. It attracted me because of the title but I never added it to my tbr because of the rating. If you do read it I'd love to hear your thoughts!

message 100: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Maybe just read it, get it out of the way, so you can fully focus on Fitz from Saturday onwards :)
