ABANDONED. Science Fiction - man crashes and is captured by enemy, primitive hostile race who uses magic/telepathy

I read this series in the eighties. From memory there was an advanced race and a primitive race on the planet.

The man dreamt of the primitive race and there was a connection.

The man was either flying a space ship or some advanced transport and crashed or was attacked. He starts to admire/respect the primitive race and there was a prophesy.

This could be the Amtrak Wars series. The first book (of six) is Cloud Warrior. The main character from the advanced group is a pilot of a sort of microlight that is launched from a giant land train (they're all named after John Wayne films and are based in underground shelters that seem to be based around old stations). There's a lot of stuff about prophesy and 'the talisman' as I remember.
