While I haven't seen the movie, the book was one I had to force myself to finish. When they first started talking about the different factions the teenagers had to choose between, the categorizations seemed so nonsensical to me - with only the extremes represented, most people should have been divergent. I couldn't get past that as I turned each page.
The book is much better but the movie is still good
Overrated? I don't think I would go that far. I can see good qualities in it and potential. While the Divergent series was definitely not my favorite series, it still had its moments where I was hooked. I thought it was completely different from the Hunger games and I didn't compare it at all. The first two books were good, I thought, but not over-the-top fantastic. The third book went in a completely different direction and I could barely finished it. So, yes, I wasn't overly in love with it, but I also understand why people would think it's amazing. It's main protagonist was pretty strong and it had a different kind of mindset when it came to the factions. It wasn't a snoozer, but there could have been more. I still recommend it to people who enjoy dystopians because I recognize what it has even though it was not my personal favorite.
Yeah, the movie was better. I can see why people like this, but it's not THAT good. It's too long and there's a lot of sitting around. It's just low quality. Now, I liked the first book a lot. But people are acting like it something special.
All good points. I am struggling through Insurgent now, and am finding it hard to keep going and pick it back up. I have a friend who has read the series 5 times and its all she talks about, but no matter what she says I can't like this series :/I also want to finish the other books before the movies come out, because insurgent looks good (but confusing??)
Having read many dystopian series, I found this one to be one of my favorites. It had a realism that many others didn't. You could actually see the possibility of this situation happening in the future. As for the categories being extremes...sure, but extremes are how humans do things a lot of the times. Just look at the news right now. Dystopian stories all have that element of extremes, anyway. It's one way they separate themselves from our reality. I found the Divergent trilogy to be more about character development, anyway. How Tris grows and how she shows her true self in the end is the important part, I think. Discovery of self, if you will. That alone makes this very different from any other series in the genre.

Everyone's like "This book is so much better than the hunger games!" and going on about how amazing it is, and I can't ..."Divergent seemed ridiculously boring. Halfway through and still nothing. On another website, I read a review and it said that "Divergent book had more holes than swiss cheese." Couldn't agree with it more.
Emma wrote: "Why?"Well, it was about three hundred pages longer than it needed to be. And Tris bugged me. She did a lot of stupid things. Why? She was suicidal. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's a SURVIVAL novel where the protagonist is SUICIDAL. Doesn't make for a very interesting read.
Plus, I have a tendency to hate second books in trilogies. It always feels like filler.
I agree with you. It is overrated in my opinion. See, it has the not-so-secret formula for a commercially successful book. It's entertaining at certain parts and very impressive considering Veronica Roth is young and it was her debut in the business. The market for YA genre these days revolves around a tattooed average-looking petite badass female protagonist who starts from zero level and ends up an ass-kicker, oh and throw in a love story with a hot guy to make it more appealing to youngsters. Other than that, the work is clearly inspired by many other books in the same genre (I compared it to The Hunger Games in my review) and the writing is neither bad nor great, not to mention the so many flaws and unbelievable environment as far as dystopia is concerned. As for the movie, it was pretty good. I didn't like how Tris reacted to her father's death though, it was such a cold moment with no sentiment whatsoever.
Extremely overrated.I had to create a new bookshelf here called "utter dren" for this horrible book. It was as hole ridden as a typical Hollywood action movie. Guess what? The target audience loves Hollywood action movies and don't care about plot holes sized proportionally to the budget of the movie. The hype was generated by and for such people.
I wouldn't necessarily say that the Divergent series was nothing compared to the Hunger games etc. I enjoyed the books, however I personally wouldn't say they were the best books I ever read. I think there was a lot of hype without to much to back it up as do a lot of books. It really depends on the reader! :)
Next to the big three (Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and the Hunger Games) this is something we are all going to get in over in 5 minutes. Divergent was good but it's not something that will be in our hearts forever and will be the high light of our generation. Also I was really disappointed that they took the paint balls out of the movie. It was the best part!
I completely agree! I liked it, and I thought it was enjoyable. However, it wasn't anything special. In fact, I found the overall plot (up until the 3rd book) to be really cliché. I also thought that Veronica Roth made Tris too powerful by letting her survive the death serum thing at the end. Whoever said it has a sense of realism, I disagree. I don't see anything like that ever happening in our future. It's good, but it's just not on the same level as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or the Hunger Games.
I agree with Garima! Every hero needs a weakness (Percy's is loyalty, etc) but Tris didn't really have any flaw to over come that I could see.(I only read book 1 so I might be wrong)
Tris wasn't flawless. I mean, I agree with every else Garima said. But Tris struggled with rashness and she was honestly kind of annoying.

They aren't even remotely the same accept for the fact that they are both about girls being total badasses and saving the world.

She had an idea for a story, and it just seems that people are always comparing those two books with each other. Its not like people did the same with the loe=rd of the rings and game of throns so why do it with Divergent and the Hnger Games
Simon wrote: "Matthew wrote: "Simon wrote: "Sami wrote: "I wouldn't necessarily say that the Divergent series was nothing compared to the Hunger games etc. I enjoyed the books, however I personally wouldn't say ..."See, I disagree. THG was successful, why NOT copy it? And it worked! I'm not saying that's a problem, but I think that's what Roth, and about a hundred other YA authors, did.
Dramapuppy wrote: "Simon wrote: "Matthew wrote: "Simon wrote: "Sami wrote: "I wouldn't necessarily say that the Divergent series was nothing compared to the Hunger games etc. I enjoyed the books, however I personally..."But its not copying. Honestly do you want to ask Suzann Collins if she thinks its coppying. All im sying is that if Collins says that waht Veronica Roth rote was coppying off of her story than thats fine. Otherwise it really dosent matter.

I just think Roth wanted to cash in on the teen dystopian craze. Not a bad plan, actually. It worked out for her, and we get another THG-like thing to read.

It is a THG-like thing. thank you thank you thank you. you rock, and i agree 100% with you on that one. Enough said.
why are they spending hundreds of $$$$$$$$ to make a movie for a book that wasn't even that good? I'll tell you: I don't know. any guesses?
I was actually discussing this with someone earlier. I've recently red this amazing fantasy novel that just got me hooked from the very first page. It's mysterious and magical, the characters are fantastic and the story in itself blew my mind. It's called Incarceron by Catherine Fisher. Anyway, they were going to turn it onto a film but dropped it. And I am telling you, this book would make such a good movie, because its so different to a book like divergent. And I'm thinking, why would they rather make a movie for any John green book or divergent other than Incarceron? if I was qualified or lived in Hollywood, I'd do it myself! The bottom line here is divergent just isnt that good and there are much better books out there to make movies of.

I went to 3 different libraries and New Moon and Breaking Dawn were on their 'tryin to get rid of but we want money' shelves for a dollar and at Home-goods or wherever they were selling it for 3 dollars.

Yeah, and even worse they were going to cast Taylor Lautner as the main character... Anyone who has read that book knows how big of a mistake that was going to be!! I read the first 3 chapters of twilight and never picked it back up.
i started it a couple of years ago but had to return it back to library. i was only up to chapter 2 or something but it was better than Divergent!

After reading such good books like the hunger games trilogy, Divergent is nothing. It's nowhere near as good, and it's too similar. I just couldn't enjoy it that much, although I did rate it 4 stars and I did like it, just not THAT much...
So I believe this book was way too overrated and I have to say for the first time EVER, I liked the movie better... did anyone else feel this way?
