I'm a little bit late but I'm planning to start The Selection tomorrow! I'm excited! I just finished a book with a lot of that risking-lives-to-stop-supreme-evil kind of thing, so I'm hoping this will be a little more light-hearted with less serious themes and stuff. It doesn't look too long and the words are pretty big so I'm hoping I can fly through it quickly! :)

yay!!
Does anyone know how long The Selection series is going to be? I thought it was a trilogy originally, and The Heir was some sort of spin-off, but I don't think that's right and now there's a fifth one on Goodreads, which is currently untitled. I've been looking around the internet but I can't find information anywhere on how many books the series is going to be in the end. So I was just wondering if any of you guys knew. Thanks! :)

Five major books - There are the three books told from America's POV. Then there are going to be just two books from Eadlyn's POV.
There are also the novellas, which are going to be re-released in hardback at the end of the year.

Oh, cool. Thanks a lot, Erin! So, just out of interest, do you think it could be read as a trilogy since the last two books don't follow America?

Oh. Definitely. I look at it as a trilogy and then a duo because of the two different story arcs.

At the moment I'm ten chapters (pg 118) into the first book, and I can definitely understand why people have been saying it is predictable. Most things so far I have seen coming except when (view spoiler) , which I found to be very out of the blue. Did any of you see that coming?

I might join you guys with them, i love to reread it. :]

No! That's why I thought this book was special. You thought you'd already predicted everything, then Kiera Cass would do something last minute and surprise you.

2. What do you think about the application process for the Selection? It's grueling. Obviously, it's rigged. But I don't really have an opinion about it.
3. What do you think about the actual Selection and how its run? It's a good process.
4. What do you think about the contestants in the Selection? Some of them are really nice, but others not. I was surprised when Ashley didn't make it.
5. How did you like the book? I really liked it!
I've just finished The Selection and as far as the storyline with Marlee acting weird goes, my theory is (view spoiler)
Discussion Questions for The Selection:
1. What do you think about the characters? (America, Maxon, Aspen, etc.)
I like America but I find it annoying how she's so indecisive (e.g. how she couldn't work out how she felt about Maxon, while I thought it was really obvious!), and also a little hypocritical about castes (she said she didn't like people who judge on what caste you're in, yet at one point she definitely said 'I enjoy the company of Sixes').
Maxon I don't really like if I'm honest... I don't know why. I think the author should have worked harder to get rid of the initial impression of him being a creep (well, I at least felt this way, because of the Selection and all that). I just would have liked it if he was described more.
I was surprised at how much I liked Aspen because I don't usually like the over-protective husband-must-provide-for-wife kind of guys. But, yeah, I found him to be kind of sweet even if he did sometimes make the wrong choices.
2. What do you think about the application process for the Selection?
Well, I like the fact that the girls apply willingly rather than it being compulsory.
3. What do you think about the actual Selection and how it's run?
I wish there were more tests that the girls had to go through like seeing how they would act at a formal tea party with the queen of another country or something, rather than it being solely about Maxon's opinions. It's good that they do it that way but it doesn't seem like it would make for a strong queen.
4. What do you think about the contestants in the Selection?
To be honest, I found it really confusing how sometimes they were portrayed as will-do-anything-to-get-what-they-want kind of girls, and sometimes they were totally friendly towards America. Celeste I did not like as a character - I found her unrealistic, cliché and more of a plot-device than a person.
5. How did you like the book?
I enjoyed it, but had a couple of complaints. I ended up giving it 3 stars out of 5. My review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Pre-reading discussion questions for The Elite:
1. How do you think the ending of The Selection will affect The Elite?
I think the love triangle is destined to become a much bigger thing in the plot, and the remaining girls in the Selection will be more involved since now there is less of them. I'm also expecting a little more depth on the rebels and their history.
2. Do you think America will get into trouble in The Elite?
With Maxon? I doubt it. With Aspen? Probably. With Celeste? Heck yeah!
3. Team Aspen or Team Maxon?
I don't know. Love triangles usually put me off the girl being with either of the boys, but I know eventually she probably will, so in that sense I'm normally driven by whatever the book is telling me at the time. For instance, if at that moment of time it looks like she's more likely to end up (happily) with Maxon, I will probably ship him, and vice versa. If I had to pick one though, I'd probably say Team Aspen. I just can't see her pining for Maxon in the same way she did for Aspen in The Selection. :)

:D I have to say, you pick up on a lot of things. You find out in The Elite!

I'm glad to see that so many people are enjoying these books! We should let Kiera know that we're reading!

1. What do you think about the characters? (America, Maxon, Aspen, etc.) - I love America's and Maxon's character. By the end of the book Aspen really got on my nerves haha
2. What do you think about the application process for the Selection? It's interesting way to find your partner but I suppose it's much like an arranged marriage except he has some sort of a choice haha
3. What do you think about the actual Selection and how its run? I loved the idea of the whole thing, it made for a fun read.
4. What do you think about the contestants in the Selection? oooo I hate celeste!
5. How did you like the book? Loved it 5 out of 5!

Yes! How would we contact her though?

Wow, that would be awesome! I love that this group gives its members the chance to interact with authors so much. It's something I've never really been able to do before and it's a load of fun. ;)

I don't understand, either. I think too many people went into the first book thinking that it was going to be something more than it was and just expected too much.
I think they were just meant to be light reads that brush seriousness, but I do think they are perfect way to introduce younger teenage girls to dystopia and science fiction.

I think you're right. I went into The Selection with low expectations because of the reviews, but I ended up loving it. I think it's a fluffy and light read. It does feel more like a cute romancy book than a dystopian read to me, and I think that's fine. So, I totally agree with you.

I agree too! I think The Selection was interesting, The Elite was good, and The One was amazing. Although, I did feel that The Elite was slightly better than The Selection, although some parts weren't as good.

:) But, you still have The heir. :)

And the short stories!

I agree. The Elite was better, although the way America changed her mind all the time annoyed me. Also, I found the (view spoiler) thing about the King pretty shocking. And the Marlee thing, of course. I can't wait to read The One, but I'm waiting until next month. I'm reading The Prince and The Guard now, and I don't really have an opinion yet. I don't really care for Aspen, so I don't know if I'll like his story. You made me really excited to read The One though.

:D I haven't read the short stories yet, but I sure am going to!
Angie wrote: "The One....O.M.G!!!! This one thing happened and I had to read it three times before I would believe that it actually happened. That book is crazy!"
Right? I loved The One because it was all over the place.

Yeah! :D
I've now finished The Elite. I think I preferred it to the first one. Although I wish the Selection had actually progressed a bit more. This series feels kind of dragged out for me - the whole Selection probably could've just fitted into one book, in my opinion. Oh well, excited for The One! I'm intrigued to see how everything ends. :)

Oh yeah... I think it would have made for a good duo because a lot of The Elite got boring, but The One is amazing! I hope you enjoy it. :)

Yes! It's the final one (I think), and I think it's going to be about Eadlyn. Don't quote me on that though. I do know that the two new books to this series pushed back another series that Kiera was working on.

Okay, I finished The One yesterday, and let me just say... WOW. It was amazing! It was so unpredictable which was awesome because I really wasn't expecting that from this book! Very excited to see if The Heir is just as good. Although I don't really understand why (view spoiler) . It just doesn't seem like them. Also, does anyone know how Eadlyn is pronounced? I think I should know before I read an entire book about her, lol.

A-di-lynn? There is a pronounciation sheet I saw out there a while ago, I think that's how you say it...
It's pronounced kind of like it's spelled. The E is long, and the A is silent. So you get EED-len. :)
Oh okay. Both of those help, thanks guys. So I guess if you used Rose's pronunciation it would be like Madeline but without the M? That's a pretty nice name.
I'm interested to see the next generation in The Heir, not just America and you-know-who's kids (trying not to spoil here!). Seeing if people like (view spoiler) had any children should be cool.
