Sarah Epstein (sarah_epstein) | 34 comments Hi. I'd like some help adding to the Awards section of my book's page. This is the book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

For the award currently listed as 'Children's Book Council of Australia Award Nominee for Book of the Year for Older Readers (2019)', could this please be changed to 'Children's Book Council of Australia Honour Book of the Year for Older Readers (2019)' (reference here: https://cbca.org.au/winners-2019)

Could you please add 'Winner of the Davitt Award for Best Young Adult Crime Novel (2019)' (reference here: https://www.sistersincrime.org.au/sis...)

Could you please add 'Queensland Literary Award Nominee for Griffith University Young Adult Book Award (2019)' (reference here: https://www.slq.qld.gov.au/2019-queen...)

Could you please add 'Australian Book Industry Awards Nominee for Book of the Year for Older Children (2019)' (reference here: https://abiawards.com.au/2019-abia-sh...)

Could you please add 'Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature Nominee for Best Young Adult Book (2020)' (reference here: https://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/adelaide-f...)

Thank you so much!
Sarah.

Ann | 26 comments Hi Sarah,

Done... ish!

As a fellow Aussie I ventured into my first adding and amending of awards. I have followed the syntax of the awards themselves and the Goodreads bible, which is why there are some slight changes to your wording.

If a more experienced librarian could please cast an eye over my additions and changes to make sure I didn't make a mess of things, I would appreciate it. While fumbling through I 'created' a few new awards and then deleted them. Will they cache out? There are two awards with 0 books at the moment :-(

Thanks,

Ann (who sadly has to learn by doing, and then being corrected by others)

Sarah Epstein (sarah_epstein) | 34 comments Hi Ann,

Thanks so much! All looks good to me. :) Yes, I wasn't completely sure of the wording and format of how GR lists the awards, so this all looks great.

Thanks for such a speedy response. Happy new year to you!

Cheers,
Sarah

They look good, Ann. Thanks for being willing to work on awards. For those zero awards, you can edit the award (on the right side) and delete them. Or you can wait and I'll do them in the morning.

Ann | 26 comments Sarah, happy to help and your book is on my TBR mountain! Perfect for my two favourite genres - YA and Crime.

Thanks, Elizabeth, again... you have mentored me before :-)

I will investigate my zero award lists later today and edit this reply as to whether of not I was successful.

EDIT: It would seem that I deleted them correctly first time around and have cached out successfully.

Also, in my travels looking at the Awards listings, I noticed many of the lists were not up to date in GR. Should I make this a project for myself to slowly work through, or is it better to respond only to active requests? I know I learn through repetition, so locking one skill in well appeals to me. This is not to say I won't dip my toe into other requests where I feel competent.

The question wasn't for me but I'm here so I'll answer anyway.
Ann, what I usually try to do (and recomend you to) is prioritize the newer requests, but when things get quiet around here, start digging for the older ones that weren't done.

As a volunteer, you get to choose your own path. I got burned out on almost all librarian work for a few months and have been slowly working myself back. I'm still not doing requests and can't even say how much I appreciate those of you who are. In the meantime, I've been trying to catch up some of the awards. It's a never-ending battle! There is too much work for one person and we all have areas of awards that appeal to us personally.

(How's that for sitting on the fence?)

Ann | 26 comments Thanks, Elizabeth, for permission to go at my own pace.

I didn't read your reply as fence sitting, just pragmatic, helpful and welcome advice.

Because of my time zone, and when I can log in, many of the more simple tasks (suitable for my skills and confidence) have already been resolved by Librarians who can add a book cover etc within seconds :-) And I have fallen foul of cautiously investigating a task only to discover it has been completed by someone else. (Yes, I saw the thread suggesting that you claim a job by adding an 'On it' type message, and I will try that in the future.)

Meanwhile I will tinker away as and when I can. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your and other more experienced Librarians offering up advice. Reading the digest that is emailed out is dauntingly long (such that I have never read a full one) and overwhelming, but I keep gleaning info that will hopefully help me in the future.

Ann (offering a spare pillow to join you on the Awards fence)
