HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Finished Without You by Anthony Rapp . I love the musical Rent and really enjoyed hearing his story. Emotional and funny.

I really enjoyed it! And it's a stand-alone which is nice with having so many series going.

message 356: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
Agreed! I appreciate stand alones so much more these days!

message 357: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Recently finished Capturing the Devil (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #4) by Kerri Maniscalco on audio - YAY for a finished series!

Also finished Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw and Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died Coping with Loss Every Day by Ty Alexander in physical copies. Winterwood was beautiful - loved it so much! The other was hard to get through but healing in it's own way.

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
Yay for finishing a series!! How did you like it?

Healing is good. Hugs.

message 359: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments I loved it! Satisfying conclusion to the series!

message 360: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Just binged the audio for The Boundless (The Beholder, #2) by Anna Bright which makes another series done! Loving being able to strike out series!

message 361: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
There is something gratifying about striking them off as done yes!

I don't know anything about that series. Tell me about it!

message 362: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments The first is The Beholder - it's advertised as an Odyssey retelling. I'm not super familiar with the Odyssey so can't speak to that but I enjoyed both. Book one definitely was more focused on romance than I expected and a lot of people were disappointed by that - I went in with really low expectations so maybe that helped!

message 363: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
Hmm... okay. I love the Odyssey so I'll have to check into it more. If its a poor retelling, and mostly focused on the romance I probably wont love it. Thanks!!

message 364: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Finished Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2) by Jim Butcher and was reminded how much I adore Dresden! Can't believe I waited so long to come back to the series.

message 365: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
Dresden really gets going after book 3! My fave will always be book 7 though!

message 366: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Brittany wrote: "Dresden really gets going after book 3! My fave will always be book 7 though!"

Ahh! That makes me excited even more to keep going!

message 367: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
The end of three is really where the meta plot takes effect! Each book is still its own story but the overall story arc gets going in full there!

message 368: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Just finished The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo . So so good!

message 369: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments My daughter has been pushing me to read These Witches Don't Burn (These Witches Don't Burn, #1) by Isabel Sterling so finally did that this past week and just finished! I loved it - it ended up being so much better than I went in expecting!

message 370: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
Glad to hear The Poet X was good! And that you enjoyed the book pushed on you by your daughter

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Just wrapped up Skulduggery Pleasant (Skulduggery Pleasant, #1) by Derek Landy and while it is a middle grade book, I adored it! So much fun - and the audio is really well done!

Ah Heather so glad you enjoyed Skulduggery, it's one of my favourite series! Skulduggery was one of the two big fantasy series of my teen years (along with Percy Jackson), started reading them when I was 12 and the first part of the series ended when I was 18 (he hadn't announced that there was going to be new books then so we all assumed it was the end).

Also it's kind of like Harry Potter in that the books get more mature as they go on, really only the first two, maybe 3 books are properly middle grade, the rest are YA.

Elena Granger | 1788 comments One more interesting fantasy middle grade book I didn't know about. I've just added it to my TBR. Thank you, Heather! :)

Gord | 1002 comments Skullduggery Pleasant is an amazing series that I've never finished. I got up to about book eight I think it was and stopped. Basically I wasn't prepared to deal with the things that were coming in the book. I really should go back and read it through to the end.

There's more books now, he started a new "phase" to the series in 2017, so there's 13 books, with two more to come. They follow an older Valkyrie.

message 378: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1002 comments I heard there was a return to the series but never really looked into. It's definitely something I need to return to.

message 379: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments So glad to see others have loved it, and so excited to continue. I'm considering rereading book one to my 8 yo old, I think he'd enjoy the story!

Elena, I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!

message 380: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Jo @Heather thank you, ladies! I'll let you know how it was for me.

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Hit a slump and haven't read in a couple of weeks. But August stats are:

16 total books completed
9 were stand alone's
2 were series wrap up's
2 new series started
1 was a re-read
14 were audio/mix of audio and physical
2 were physical only

I had 10 five star reads and 6 four star reads.

message 382: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6455 comments Mod
16 books is still pretty awesome! Slumps happen! 10 five star reads in a month is incredible

message 383: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments Great job anyway. It doesn't matter how many books we read, the best thing here is just to enjoy reading whatever we want :)

You did great with the 16 books though! And 2 finished series is awesome! These Witches Don't Burn sounds incredible! I love witchy books! Definitely adding it to the never ending tbr list. Lol

message 385: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments These witches ended up being so much more than I expected! I hope you enjoy it!

message 386: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Wow.. Only two books in September. What a strange month it was for me. I read Regretting You by Colleen Hoover and re-read The Wicked King by Holly Black. Both were five stars for me. Also got half through Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe, which I'm finishing up today, and really liking it a lot.

Maybe my slump of reading has made my rating more laid back hahah!

My three re-reads were:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman The Queen of Nothing (The Folk of the Air, #3) by Holly Black
I'd say QoN was my favorite re-visit. There is just something about Jude/Cardan that makes my heart happy.

My two new reads were:
Midnight at the Blackbird Café by Heather Webber Vengeful (Villains, #2) by V.E. Schwab
They're both so completely different that it makes it hard to pick but I'd lean towards Vengeful because I adore Schwab's writing style and already had an attachment to these characters. Though she did kill one of my favorites off so not happy about that :(

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Finished the year with 185 books finished! Haven't done the math to see how many were which format or ratings but overall, one helluva year! Reading has drastically slowed down since I moved and changed jobs in August so still debating 2021's goals.

message 400: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments 185 books is still a huge pile! Congratulations on the great stats :)
