Horror book set in early 20th century England. Something's in the basement.

Hi, my dad is trying to find a book that he read 30-40 years ago. He thinks that it was written in the 1940s or earlier. He can't remember the title or the author, but I will tell you what he can remember. If you can comment with books you think it may be, I would appreciate it.
-It is a horror book
-Setting was English countryside and bleak
-The premise is that a couple think there is something in their basement
-He said it was slow for the majority of the book, but that it really picked up and became very scary the last 40 pages or so

maybe Dr Terror's House of Horrors ? I read my dads old copy recently so should be the right sort of date, and one of the stories in it is set in a bleak UK landscape with an isolated house and a werewolf (I think) coming from the basement.
