4 stars
Good collection of Ghost stories, not to long. I would have liked a little more background on a few of the stories but overall well written and put together. I liked the grouping of stories, part one-vanishing hitchhikers, part two-street walkers, part three- Phantom Travelers, part four-Lost Souls. I have heard or read a few of the stories but surprised on how many I had not heard. One that sticks out is "The Ghost Train", it is about the train that carried Abraham Lincoln's body. "On April 21, 1865, a train carrying the coffin of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln leaves Washington, D.C. on its way to Springfield, Illinois, where he would be buried on May 4. The train carrying Lincoln’s body traveled through 180 cities and seven states on its way to Lincoln’s home state of Illinois." I have read about Abraham Lincoln haunting the White House but nothing about nothing about his funeral train haunting the rails.

Nice collection of short stories. Book is made up of five chapters, Haunted Houses, Highways and Byways, The Spirit's Inn, Snippets and Ghosts in Public. I would have like more background on a lot of the stories. I have heard a few of the stories and couple I had only heard part of the story, it was nice to hear some new ones that happens in my beloved Rocky Mountains. . A few of the stories have a picture or two, that is a nice touch.

2 stars
After losing her husband Lee Barrett moves back to her hometown. She tries to get a job at a TV station but the job was given to another person. When a call-in psychic is murdered Lee finds herself taking a job to replace the murdered psychic. After a few days Lee starts to realize she might have some real psychic abilities. Strange things start to happen and she finds herself in the middle of finding a murderer.
Book is long winded, story line is predictable and depicts to many stereotypes. I must say though I do like Carol J. Perry's writing style, able to pull you in and for that I am giving it two stars.

During a six mile hike along the Maine-New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail Trisha McFarland gets tired of hearing her older brother Pete and Mother argue and wonders off on her own. After trying to take a shortcut to get back to them she becomes lost. This amazing story is her tale on what all she goes through while trying to survive herself, the elements and the unknown enemy that keeps leaving a trail of dead animals and mangled trees and brush.
I just could not put this book down. Book is thought provoking and at times downright spooky. Why just four stars then, I hated the ending. It needed more closure for the roller coaster of emotions I and the girl went through.

Standing in the Light The Captive Diary of Catharine Carey Logan, Delaware Valley, Pennsylvania, 1763 (Dear America) by Mary Pope Osborne
2 stars
The year is 1763, Catharine Carey Logan lives with her Quaker family in Delaware Valley Pennsylvania along side the Delaware Indians. This is her diary and it shows how fast things can change in an instance. She is captured along with her younger brother by some of the Lenape.

This is 100% the perspective of a 13 year old mind. The lack of observation on the children’s part as well as the quick to be in love part and wonder about who to marry were hard to stomach but this was a different era, this was expected of girls to be thinking and to dream about. Lots of stereotypes but it is good enough for two stars because like it or not parts of the book are a real look into life in the year 1763.

Will Chesney wanted to be a Navy Seal at a young age and goes for his dream right after high school. He endures the physical and mental challenge and becomes a Navy Seal. Not long after accomplishing his dream he volunteers to become a military working dog handler after attending an assault dog demonstration. The dogs have to go through intense training just like their handlers. Will Chesney is paired with Cairo and they bond quickly.

The book is very raw and gives a very ugly look as well as a beautiful look at the life of Will Chesney and his Dog Cairo. Some of the content can be hard to swallow for animal lovers.

Hard Truth (Anna Pigeon, #13) by Nevada Barr
2 stars
This is my first Nevada Barr book so I am not able to compare the others in the series. I don't even know where to start with this book so I will start with,I like her writing style. The story is very intense and graphic at times and some scenes overwritten and others I would have liked more background. The story is a mixture of mystery, suspense and psychological warfare. I wanted to like this book so much because it is set in the Colorado,Rocky Mountains where Sheriff Paul Davidson and Anna Pigeon moved to so Anna could assume her new post as district ranger. It just did not come together for me and I don't know why, I just could not get into the full story.
I would like to give a warning, it does have harm to animals and cussing so pass on this book if you can't handle those types of things.

A church burns down and a body is found. Texas Ranger Lieutenant Sarah Armstrong tries to put pieces together on what and when, then onto who and why made this happen.
The book starts off slowly, gives you a touch of information, the scene of the incident, then hits a fast moving pace that will not let you go. Then right in the middle of all that a few Mom and Daughter moments. I found that to be a nice touch, keeps Sarah human and real. I enjoyed the fact that there was not tons of twists but enough to keep you guessing. LOVED the ending of the book, just a touch of romance.

3 stars
Julie Weiss's diary starts off in the year 1938 where she and her family live in Vienna, Austria and ends November 28,1938 in New York where Julie is forced to flee and live with her Aunt and Uncle.

Julie is a normal eleven year old, either loves or hates everything. Then takes a very dark turn. Julie is forced to deal with suicide, hate, lost friendships and the unknown.

The reason for the three stars is so much is missing or left out. I know it is a diary of a young girl and

I am sure the author did not want to take it too far but parts are just unrealistic.

I found this book at a book sale. Looked interesting so bought it for 50 cent, should have skipped it and kept my money. The part of it that gives a very small peek into who Michelle Rhee is interesting. The rest of the book is a walk through of what is wrong with the educational system in Washington, D.C. and how she jumped in to save the system AKA the children. Author is very one sided and writing is dry, boring and filled with politics.

The collection of short stories, some I can relate to and others I can't are more memories from his childhood and adulthood. Has a couple of creepy parts in the book, the rest are typical dealing with others thinking and ways stories. I enjoy Augusten’s sarcastic humor but the constant “woe is me feel” does get old. Overall good book and would have given it two stars but the tooth fairy story alone raised it to three stars.

Taken from the book. "Family: Can't live with them, can't live without them”. His brother is in trouble with a capital T; his grandfather, the wizard Ebenezar McCoy, is warning him that a faction in the White Council is maneuvering to kick Harry out; and oh, remember the Accords? The agreement that keeps all those supernatural nations playing kind-of-sort-of nice is under fire, teetering on the edge of destruction. And Harry's brother might have something to do with that. "

This is a hard book to review. Harry is dealing with family drama, meetings with old friends, foes, his Daughter Margaret and saving his Brother Thomas. The action packed fights are minimal but are there as well as Harry’s wisecracking humor. The book is missing the big picture story line. It was like little snippets of life going on here and there, I sure hope it all comes together in the next book. My favorite part in the whole book is the pancake breakfast scene. Deep talks and flipping pancakes, yep, makes the characters real.

I enjoyed this book very much. I know about and I have lived in a few of the New Mexico and Texas towns Max Evans lived or worked at. I am able to relate and picture them in my head as I read. I am blessed with having seen many of his paintings hanging in my friends and family walls. This is the second book of his I have read and I enjoyed reading Madam Millie: Bordellos from Silver City to Ketchikan too so I am will be looking to read his other books.
The book is a collection of short stories of the horses that came and went in his life as well as a little background of his childhood, friends and family. Wonderful pictures throughout the book of people and horses. For the animal lovers who can't take the death by another animal type stories, you might want to stay clear of the book, they are not graphic but paint the ugly ways of life.

I have never read Moby Dick and after reading this book, I am going to pass on reading it. I have had enough of whale ships and sea stories. Nathaniel Philbrick did a wonderful job on the research and the background information and nothing was over the top. I was not sure if I would be able to handle a whale story but Philbrick kept me interested most of the book. Humans and whale both want to survive and both will do anything to do so.

Brynn MacAlister has a busy life. Her microdairy is about to host the first cheesemakers contest at the annual summer fair, she is fostering a cow and one of her cows is about to have a baby. If that was not enough a mysterious death, that looks like a murder, happens and she finds herself in the middle of trying to figure out who would murder this person and why. Brynn tries to do normal life things as she tries to solve the mystery but find herself in danger and in the middle of a shooting at the fair.

I am enjoying this series very much. It has a touch of humor amongst the madness. Mollie Cox Bryan does not put a whole lot of twist but does keep you guessing. The end of the book was a nice change, ended with a nice happy scene.

Taken from the book, "A tarantula the size of a woman's hand, the horrifying of gentle creatures, wandered slowly across Ann's path."As a Park Ranger I will protect and serve you." She talked to the creature from a safe three yards away. "But we'll never be friends. Is that going to be a problem?"" This cracked me up. I grew up with tarantulas, I could watch them for hours while they moved around the garden. I have never understood people's fear of them but accept it.
Anna Pigeon is a new ranger and working in the Guadalupe Mountains when a fellow Ranger is found dead. Anna has doubts on what the report says on cause of death and makes it her mission to find out what really happened. Anna Pigeon comes across as arrogant at times but I like that the she is a strong person with a touch of weakness. Makes her a well rounded person.
The book has slow parts and fast moving parts. I had part of the mystery figured out pretty quick but not the whole ugly picture. I will continue with the series.

A collection of short stories, some are very good and some just ok. I enjoyed the first story, Merlin Dreams in the Mondream Wood, and was hoping that it would set the tone for the rest of the book but the other storylines feel short. I do like Charles De Lint's writing style, he is able to draw you in and feel what is going on. Book is written for 7th thru 9th grade and young adult but adults who like the supernatural would enjoy this one too.

A lot of research went into this fascinating history book. Yes, parts are a little overwhelming with details but it is a history book so this is to be expected. It was also a dry read.
I like that it is broken down into parts. "Part I. An Irrepressible Tide, January-March 1775, Part II. Let It Begin Here April 1775, Part III Decisive Days, May-June 1775." Has a nice collection of pictures and maps throughout the book showing who is being talked about and the locations. Also, has a nicely put together Index in the back. I found myself using it a few times when I wanted to go back and reread a couple of parts about people and places.

116. Pete the Cat Trick or Pete by Kimberly Dean
5 stars
Cute story about Pete the Cat going Trick or Treating with his Dad and they have a flashlight. You lift-the-flap to see what the flashlight revels while on their journey. Illustrations are very cute and go while with the story line.

117. The Lonely Scarecrow by Tim Preston
I must say I truly enjoyed this wonderful story. It is a book that shows you not to judge others. The illustrations are outstanding. I must say the cover of the book got my attention but when I picked it up I was in ah, it is textured throughout the whole book. I love those type of books for kids books, well for adults too.

Rough Beauty Forty Seasons of Mountain Living by Karen Auvinen
2 stars
I liked this book and I disliked this book. It was like hearing a old friend who just rambled on about whatever came to mind as they told their story. Some stories have no clear ending and other holes. I do like her descriptions of the Rocky mountains, as a person who has a cabin in the Rocky Mountains this is one of the reasons I picked it to read. She comes across strong willed and soft, I like that makes her well rounded. My dislike she also comes across arrogant at times but I can see where that comes from while reading about her interactions with her Father, he is a real jerk. The book also talks about her having to deal with her aging Mother, the life and death of her dog and her love life.
The book is all over the place with feelings and lack of feelings. Not one I would read again but happy I read it.

Close Range Wyoming Stories by Annie Proulx
3 stars
I had never heard of Annie Proulx until I came across this book at a book sale. I enjoyed Annie writing style, her way with words and her ability to draw you into a scene is amazing. I just did not care for some of the stories, some of them are are just so depressing, others are so short you just could not get the big picture of things. I did enjoy a couple of stories but even they were so sad. I know life is not always cheerful, ugly things happen and ugly people exist but a whole book filled with short stories with them, is just too much to take for me. I am giving it three stars because of the writing and the fact Annie told stories that are raw and real. I enjoyed the watercolors by William Matthews, they were placed throughout the book, nice touch. Warnings, if you can't handle cursing or same sex relationships, move on, not your book.

The Only Plane in the Sky An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett M. Graff
The Only plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff
5 stars and added to favorites
I knew going in that this was not going to be a easy quick read. I also prepared myself for very real, raw, straight forward stories and I still was not prepared enough. I could not put the book down, I felt I owed them all to keep going on and work my way through it all. Garrett M. Graff did a wonderful research job of bringing this oral history together. The book is broken down into locations, events, times and tries very hard to stay in a timeline. The stories are brief and poignant. This by far is the best book I have read so far about September 11, 2001.

I found this book at a book sale and did not know it was a series so I have not read the first two of the series. Good children's book. I liked the story line and most of the characters, one grumpy old man was annoying. Another book I wish I had know about when I was younger. Happy to have read it as an adult but would have loved it as a child.

A Night to Remember by Walter Lord
4 stars
This book was written in 1955 so I was not sure there would be anything new for me to learn, I was wrong. I have not read any books that mention the animals lost, their names and how special they were, so sad. This book still holds up even with all the new information and stories about his very tragic day. Walter Load
’s research and attention to detail is amazing. He made each person’s story so vivid you felt their plight to survive or their will to let go. He also included two drawings of the boat and a list of the passengers lost and saved.

Ill Wind (Anna Pigeon, #3) by Nevada Barr
2 stars
Anna Pigeon is a park ranger and is assigned to Colorado and works at the Mesa Verde landmark. I had a hard time getting into this one. It deals with two mysterious events, one involving a friend and the other a child. Anna finds herself, yet again, in the middle of putting the pieces together on what happened and why.

I love the concept of this series but I am done with the series. As much I like Nevada Barr’s descriptions of the landscape and story ideas, the books have not truly grabbed all of my attention. I am giving this one 2 stars because of the reasons above plus I find Anna Pigeon a bit over the top with attitude with dealing with her own self demons compared to others.

Francis La Flesche tells the story of five boys that went to a Presbyterian mission school in northeastern Nebraska.
The book is yet another eye opener on the realities of trying to find a way to learn new ways and keep the traditions.
The end of the book grab me and that image will stay with me. Well written book.

Wong Ming-Chung and his Uncle are the main characters. The Uncle is picked on by family and dreams of going to America AKA Golden Mountain. One day his dream comes true but finds out the work is hard and the ways are very different in Golden Mountain.
The book is definitely the insight of a young person. Some stories are sad and others filled with optimism.

129. Brother Eagle, Sister Sky by Chief Seattle
4 stars
The book is loosely based on Chief Seattle of the Suquamish and the Duwamish and the speech he delivered during negotiations. The protecting the earth story is there but lacks authenticity. If you are going to use a speech then don't take libreaty's, it is as simple as that. That all being said the preserve the environment message is loud and clear and for that I am giving it four stars. That and the illustrations are beautiful.

4 stars
Josh Sundquist was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma(Cancer) at a young age and loses his leg, this is his story. The first part of the book is about his childhood before and after he loses his leg. The second half is about dealing with the new body, finding his place in life while growing up then moves on into adulthood life. Story is inspirational and I like his humor.

My Father, the Pornographer by Chris Offutt
5 stars
I was apprehensive on reading this book because of the title alone. It is a hard subject to read about, yes it has some dark parts and faces the realities of the life of a porn writer and their families. That being said, it is really a good book. Chris does not tip toe around the subject and yet does not go over the top with descriptions or subject matter. His Father was a horrible human being but I can't help to wonder throughout the whole book what happened to him in his childhood to make him the man he was. In my book Chris Offutt is a survivor as well as his Mother and siblings.

Christmas After All The Great Depression Diary of Minnie Swift, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1932 (Dear America) by Kathryn Lasky
3 stars
The Diary of Minnie Swift is from the ears and eyes of a child. Her story is raw at times and other times a typical child's life, giving you a good idea of what it was to be a child during the depression. Not overly dramatised but does show the effects of unemployment and the impacts it has on not only the Minnie Swift's family but the people around her. Not a quick read and at times a little hard to keep track of what was going on where, when and with whom. Felt a little pushed to get too big of a picture of everything.
