A book where peoples souls are reaped by weird creatures possibly set in 70s YA i believe also

I'm looking for a book I read a couple or more years ago. It was possibly set in the 70s but in some alternate universe where some people are chosen to be reaped,/ have their souls taken by strange creatures of some kind I think?? The main character in a Hispanic girl I believe and she may or may not have a best gay friend named Sophie. The book is about her and her friends trying to prevent her death/ reaping??? PLeaSe HelP.

A long shot guess - The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd Jones? The main character is Latina and sells her soul to the devil. Her friend / boarding school roommate is lesbian.
