I barely remember this book from when I was a kid in the 90s. I remember it had a lot of magical realism. I think the kids were in a junkyard and found some pieces of chalk and some..stars I think? They had to make a specific number of stars I think. Maybe it was seven of them? Seven portals with the chalk?
