We again begin with an emotional prologue that shares a pivotal moment from Christopher Argent’s childhood. Does it help you understand the adult he turned out to be?

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 397 comments Mod
Oh yes! Definitely!!! This author's prologues are not only heartbreaking & gut-wrenching, they're the basis for the person these characters become. Readers take the journey with them, feel their pain & agony, and thus have a better understanding of the road they travel into adulthood.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments It certainly did. It was easy to understand what made Argent the way he was.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments It's so hard to overcome a wretched beginning like the one Christopher Argent had. He was conditioned to death and violence and his only recourse was to harden himself and survive.

I knew exactly who he was after reading this prologue. How could he not have been emotionally damaged after this. It was an effective set up to understand Argent pretty quickly.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I agree with everyone. After that prologue, I knew he would have a hard time coping in the world. The author set this up perfectly.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1803 comments It definitely set the tone for the book as a whole and provided insight into Christopher's demons.

The way in which he encased himself in coldness to cut off all emotion, reminded me of The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (even though Christopher obviously doesn't have Aspergers and holds himself apart by choice).

It does remind me of Lord Mackenzie!!! Good catch, Lauren.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I've just started this book, but this prologue really does tell us what Christopher will be up against as an adult. I'm going to read it fast, I think -- I want to see how it works out in the world that we saw in her previous book.
