When my sons were young (40 years ago), I used to love reading them a bedtime book about a country fellow who started having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep at night because of the night noises and the sounds nocturnal animals were making.

Can anyone give me the name of the book that tells the story below. I would like to buy one for each of my sons to read to their children.

The country fellow went to the village wise person who told him to buy two more goats, a male and a female, to go with his single goat. That would keep his lonely goat from her mournful bleating on occasion.

A week later, the irate country fellow returned to the village wise person to complain that things were worse than ever. The goats were bleating two or three times a week and half the night. The other nights they were butting heads. The village wise person recommended getting half a dozen guinea fowls and a peacock.

A week later, the irate country fellow returned to the village wise person, irate as all git-out, "Have you ever heard a peacock squawking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MhZP... at night?" The village wise person said, "Build a dog pen and keep your coon hounds outside."

A week later, the country fellow returned with his irate neighbor from the ubac side of the mountain, who was having trouble staying asleep because of the baying of the country fellow's hounds.

Whereupon, the village wise person recommended selling the goats she had recommended for him several weeks before.

After several more increasingly irate sessions with the village wise person, the country fellow had rid his estate of all the animals the village wise person had recommended.

Two weeks went by without a visit, and a 3rd... Finally, on the 5th week, it was just too much for the country fellow to not make the trip into the village wise person with a didn't-I-tell-you-buying-more-animals-was-crazy message about how easy it was for him to fall asleep and sleep soundly through the night, except for an occasional peaceful interlude when a gentle wind would cause his corner tree to brush against his shingles.
